Would be nice if he actually had a chance of making the team.

He'll be in the bigs for most of the season, even though I doubt he'll make the team out of ST. There's always turnover in the pen, of course, and I have to imagine he'd be the first in line to be called up (unless we need a long man).

Meh-lan-son?
in fairness to logan, he looked pretty good himself. there is bound to be bullpen changes but there might be less than usual this season. either way, knowing that melancon, logan, edwar (plus others) are our depth makes me feel quite confident.

Logan was throwing pretty hard but he seems to just be another relief pitcher with decent stuff but cant throw strikes. Guys like that are a dime a dozen. Logan being left handed shouldnt give him a leg up on Melancon or anyone else who pitches better than him.Originally Posted by ajra21

LHP always get extra chances. That's especially of the hard throwing ones, though I don't necessarily put Logan in that category. A good example of this is Matt Thornton who the M's basically gave up on.Originally Posted by R.V.47

He'll be this year's version of last year's DRob.
40ish innings that will be for the most part superb/great.
Fistpumping like a champion.

Why? He averaged 93.3 on the heater last year. Do you not consider that "hard-throwing"?Originally Posted by Blazer

93.4 is considered hard throwing.Originally Posted by yankee82093

These are really small sample sizes. Perhaps he changed his arm angle to get more velo?Originally Posted by Blazer
Now that I think of it, I've never seen anyone with over 18 inches of movement (combined) on their fastball. That can't be correct, I'm not sure that's even possible.

I think he's certainly capable of that, and would sign up for it in a minute.Originally Posted by just-blaze
he's a reliever. they are inconsistent. the most average of relievers can have good years. when they do, you go with it while you can. if logan throws well this spring, why not take him north? he might keeps it going for a few months.Originally Posted by flymick24

If Mitre makes the team over Melancon, prepare the shoes for vomiting.

That's definitely a possibility. However if you look at the bullpen right now, you almost have to wonder if its basically set:Originally Posted by JavyVazquezIsSick

Unless one of Ace, Joba, or Hughes gets sent down I can't see this not being the opening day pen. I guess since we don't need a 5th starter for the first couple weeks perhaps whoever wins the 5th spot will start in Scranton so they are ready to start when needed, but otherwise I think you have to assume that both Logan and Melancon are slated for AAA.
Good chance, but I don't think it's a big deal who starts with the team. I'd guess Melancon will get a call up fairly early (assuming he pitches well in SWB) and be with the team for most of the yearOriginally Posted by JavyVazquezIsSick

Gaudin, Park, and Aceves are all pretty flexibile in the roles they can play. Any of three could be a long reliever and any of the three could be a 1-2 inning guy.Originally Posted by flymick24
Mitre is the only guy in our pen that is straight up long reliever.
Also while in theory we may be able to get rid of both Gaudin and Mitre I just can't see us trading both and limiting our rotation depth. I think we like both Gaudin and Mitre as potential spot starters. I think whoever we keep is the long reliever and probably the 6th starter. And Ace and Park will mostly pitch 1-2 innings.
In short while we are likely to deal one of Mitre or Gaudin we're not likely to deal both meaning one of them is in our pen. Park is already guaranteed a spot and unless we want Ace starting games in AAA he will be in the ML bullpen as well.

the rest is just details.
Aceves is not a "long reliever." He's a good reliever that's also capable of giving you multiple innings. Gaudin has also proven to be very good against right handers so he can be a matchup guy if need be. Because they can be effective as short relievers, I think the fact that they can also give multiple innings is a massive plus as opposed to a negative.
Win one for The Boss.
One should be traded and the other should be released if he can't be traded too. Aceves is a better starter and reliever than both of them. They should give that spot to Melancon and let him start the season pitching the 6th/7th. I want Hughes to start in AAA, there will be an injury.Originally Posted by primetime714

Despite the fact Gaudin has been terrible this spring and Mitre (apparently) has naked pictures of Girardi, I think Gaudin will make the team.
