Matsui thinks he will be booed in Bronx. Will he?

According to an interview in todays NY Times, Hideki Matsui expects to get the Bronx cheer at opening day at the Stadium when, as expected, the Yankees give him his WS ring in a visiting uniform.

    Here is the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/03/sp...tml?ref=sports.

I don't think so. I expect the Yankee fans will give him the ovation he deserves and will save the boos for another time. Am I wrong?

No way I'll boo him. I'm not gonna boo Damon, either. I think most fans will, indeed, give him the ovation he deserves. I think he was generally pretty beloved.

Abolutely not!! Or at least he shouldn't be. There are a lot of idiot fans out there who would do it anyway for all the wrong reasons.

Absolutely not. He deserves and will get a hero's welcome.

If a single Yankee fan boos him, that will make them close to surpassing Phillies fans as the worst in baseball. They are already pretty far down there (the Yankee fans on here are a very small minority).

I would hope and expect that he gets very loudly cheered. He was a great team member for many years here.

If I see anyone booing they won't be able to use their arm for 6-8 weeks.

That being said I have no doubt in my mind he will get anything but a standing ovation and cheers. He put up so many RBIs to win the World Series for us (outside of his numerous other contributions the last few years), I don't know how any true fan could ever boo him.

    Sounds like he was joking.

But I mean, I think its pretty obvious that he will get a very loud, very long standing O.

I nominate that when Damon makes his first appearance the chant should be "Boras blows! Boras blows!" Or something with far more swearing, I'm open to revisions.

I was at a game in '99 when David Wells pitched for Toronto. Obviously, he was well remembered for his perfect game and postseason efforts from the previous year, and was cheered. He was even mentioned at a special "roll call".

He was not booed, as I recall, until he came back as a Red Sox a few years later. THAT is a different situation.

I'm all for trashing Boras, but I suspect that Damon himself was a big part of their free agency strategy.

I don't have a problem with booing players who choose to leave and play for another team, but I think it's pretty clear that the Yankees never wanted Matsui back and that the decision for him to leave was the Yankees' and not his.

There is absolutely no reason for Matsui to be booed. It isn't as if he left the Yankees after a rancorous contract dispute or trashed the team in the press. In my view, he should get a long standing ovation before his first at bat. Long enough that he is distracted enough to strike out.

He won't be booed...I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees give him some sort of video tribute...If they hand out the rings that day

I can only imagine that somehow Matsui is equating himself with Pavano, that he will be treated the same way. Doesn't he remember Aaron Boone's greeting when he returned?

I'm guessing he will get his ring with the other 2009'ers and will be cheered long and loudly. Unless Mike Scioscia is such a prick that he doesn't let Matsui go and get it on the field.

Surely he jests! I love the guy and I'll be giving him a standing ovation when he comes to the stadium - the only booing he will be hearing is the boo hooing from me because he's not with us anymore.

No way, I look forward to seeing his ovation actually. Damon's welcoming might be a little mixed I think, considering all the drama.

I think that Matsui will be in the same category as Tino after he went to StL. No matter what uniform he wears at YS, I think he will always be welcomed warmly. Kind of the same circumstances as when Tino left; both may have been free agents and signed elsewhere but the fans know that the player really wanted to return to the Bronx.

Matsui must have been joking when he said that. He can't possibly believe that he would be booed.

Matsui without a doubt I'll cheer.

Damon was great when he was a Yankee, but really turned off a lot of fans with his offseason drama. I'm not going to boo him, but I'm also not going to cheer loudly for him. Maybe just an applause or something.

actually, now that you say it, it could be a Japanese "modesty" thing to say that, even though everyone actually knows he'll be cheered. He obviously saw the praise Giambi got and Abreu got after only a year and a half with the team.
