So I guess USC has their hearing before the NCAA COI today. FWIW, which isn't all that much, here is a blog post from a Bama fan. The only reason I even post it is due to the fact they are the last major football program to face a situation that could result in major violations.

The comments on that article pretty much summed it up. USC's situation and Bama's situation aren't really similar at all. If a coach on staff had knowledge of the on goings between Bush/Lake then yeah, this becomes relevant again but if not, this is pretty much a dead issue.

The question is will the NCAA try to slap us with LOIC, which is where the threat of serious penalties are.

My opinion? Unless there is other stuff that went on that hasn't been made public, the haters are going to be crying once this is all settled.

I think it is going to come down to whether or not USC "should have known" or "should have had procedures in place that would have enabled them to know." At least, I believe that is the NCAA's position on the LOIC issues. I don't think the coaching staff/AD just not knowing is enough to avoid getting hit. It hasn't been in the past (and something tells me things happening across two sports simultaneously could become a factor as to the Athletic Department's control). But I also don't know what compliance procedures USC had in place. I guess it all comes down to that...If those are found to be sufficent, then they won't get hit too badly.

It could be good for Sark and UW if they do these things:

    1. QB Jake Locker staying healthy, managing the game and pass accurately to go along with his scrambling.

    2. Their lines (both offensive and defense) win the battle in the trenches.

Wow! That is just crazy. Can't wait for the first game that gets decided on a "taunting" penalty:

    http://www.seattlepi.com/cfootball/2...s_changes.html

"Eye black with messages and wedge blocks will be banned from college football this fall, and taunting in the field of play will start costing teams points in 2011."

Beginning in 2011, live-ball penalties will be assessed from the spot of the foul and eliminate the score. Examples include players finishing touchdown runs by high-stepping into the end zone or pointing the ball toward an opponent.

Celebration penalties following a score will continue to be assessed on conversion attempts or the ensuing kickoff."
    Mo on repeating in 2010:

“The question is, do we want to do it? The question is, are we still hungry enough to do it?”

So high stepping into the end zone is banned but cut blocking which can legitimately injure opposing players is sill permitted. Good job NCAA.

    It still won't work.

Maynerd, a Mountain West Conference fan, is pulling the hairs of every member of the BCS committee for another screwjob on the mid-major conferences.

Give me a break. This is another copout for avoiding want we all want and that's a playoff system in college football.

I understand the BCS and bowls committee that the teams who didn't get in the BCS played their hearts out. That's fine.

But I think it's time to test a playoff system in college football: give it a 2-3 years test, then decide. How can you tell that a playoff won't work if you don't test it out and see what happens?

This was a pretty big surprise to me, but I wish him the best of luck:

University of Washington president Mark A. Emmert became the NCAA's new chief executive on Tuesday, ending the search that began in November.

Emmert succeeds Myles Brand, who died last September from pancreatic cancer. Brand was the first ex-university president to lead college sports' largest governing body and the first chief executive to die in office. Jim Isch has served as interim president since Sept. 22 and will continue to do so for the next several months.

Emmert will begin his duties Nov. 1. NCAA officials said Emmert was given a five-year contract.

I have no idea if Colgate can win, but this is great news:

Syracuse has added a 12th game to its 2010 schedule, with Colgate making the short trip to the Carrier Dome for a Sept. 25 matchup between longtime rivals.

Syracuse had been searching for a 12th opponent since releasing its schedule earlier this year. Colgate, with an enrollment of less than 3,000, is in Hamilton, 35 miles southeast of Syracuse.

The teams first met in 1891. Colgate leads the series, 31-29, with five ties. The Raiders haven't defeated the Orange since a 19-14 victory in 1950.

Annual meetings between the two teams ended after the 1961 season. They've met just three times since then, the time a 52-6 Syracuse victory at the Dome in 1987.

    Who knows?

Washington can challenge for a Top 4 spot in the Pac-10 this season. That's if Jake Locker stays healthy and unleashes his potential and the OL and DLs win the battles in the trenches. The Huskies are the team to watch in the Pac-10.

USC is the favorite to win the Pac-10 despite losing Pete Carroll and having Matt Barkley getting a season under his belt.

Oregon has talent, but they took a massive blow with Jeremiah Masoli suspended for the year.

Cal is inconsistent and lost RB Jahvid Best. I'm not sold on Kevin Riley.

Stanford has a tough road schedule in Pac-10 play and don't have RB Toby Gerhart.

Oregon State has Jacquizz Rodgers and a solid defense, but they need that QB.

UCLA still needs offensive line help and a QB and lost a ton of starters on D.

Arizona needs QB Nick Foles to carry his game.

Arizona State has a good defense, but pathetic offense with a capital P.

    Washington State? Meh.

    It should be.

The reason why I like the FCS and lower levels in college football is because they don't have a BCS type system the top level Bowl Subdivision has. They have a play-off tournament system.

I still think Delaney has his eyes solely on ND; at the end of the day they are the primary prize and the only one that actually makes sense. Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa State & K-State could all be fun in a 16 team conference; but ND is the main event.

Texas would be great, but that is a pipe dream. They are more suited to the Pac-10 then the Big 10.

Am I the only one who is a little confused by the idea of the PAC 10 expanding to include schools that are nowhere near the pacific time zone, let alone the pacific coast? It just seems silly. It would be like Utah joining the Big East conference.

    Not really.

There would be 2 8 team divisions. All six of the Big 12 schools involved + the Arizona schools would make up one conference, then the left over 8 Pac10 schools would make up the other. Its not THAT big of a deal.

And the Pac-10, assuming they expand, will have a conference championship game like the SEC and the ACC.

Question is though, which Big XII division will the Pac-10 get if they expand? North or South?

    I say South.

Then, you have these two divisions.

The Pacific Division: Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, California, Stanford, UCLA and USC

The Southwest Division: Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Baylor.

Well yeah, of course they'd want the Big 12 South. The Big 12 North sucks.

Add: Though Colorado is one team they're looking at, and they're in the North (and they blow too). It's never really been a question that the Pac-10 wants Texas and OU and whomever else they'll bring with them.

I think if the expansions are to take place, I think this is how it will all go down.

The Pac-10 will get the entire Big XII South division and the realignment will be like this.

As for the Big XII North, they can be spread out.

No way. The Big11Ten don't want those schools but are interested in Nebraska and Missouri. I'd say the Big11Ten add those two, Notre Dame gives in and joins the party and then two eastern teams (Rutgers/Syracuse/Pitt) to give us our second 16 team super conference.

Then the SEC adds Va Tech, Virginia, FSU and Miami from the ACC to make a 16 team super conference and the Big East and ACC merge in some form to form another big boy at the table and become the biggest and best (arguably) basketball conference around.

The big boy looking in from outside would be Kansas. They might joins the MWC with Boise State and Kansas State.

A big question mark is around Baylor - the Pac-10/16 would prefer Colorado to Baylor but will the Texas Legislature let the Pac-10 take Texas/Tech/A&M without Baylor tagging along as part of the deal?

So many questions but the dominos will start toppling soon!

This could make for some very fun Rose Bowls, which knowing Delaney is probably what he was after anyway. Bring in Cuse, Rutgers, which results in Notre Dame; then Nebraska & Missouri.

Match that up against the Pac 10 bringing in the Big XII South and BAM! every year in the Rose Bowl and you can essentially guarantee a huge bowl game and most likely extend the BCS saying that a playoff effectively already exists in the form of conference championships.

VT and UVA are not going to the SEC. I would bet my life savings that it would be Clemson and Georgia Tech before the Virginia schools.

Then at least change the name of the conference. It makes absolutely no sense for schools located in the middle of the country to be part of a conference with "Pacific" in the name.

No way in hell that happens. Nebraska and/or Missouri only from the B12 (unless by some fluke they got UT, which they won't). The B10 has no interest at all in Iowa State (no new TVs there), or either Kansas team (they bring nothing to the money table. Perhaps they love the idea of KU basketball, but this is being driven by football and KU just doesn't matter in that arena. The B10 already has enough basketball schools not pulling their weight in the football such as IU and Illinois). ISU, KU and KSU would be money drains on the conference, and therefore, they are out. Mizzou and/or Nebraska if anyone...

The rumors are that ND, if they were willing to join, (which I do not think they will until they cant figure out what to do with basketball and their Olympic sports) wants to be the only team in the expansion. Basically, they dont want the money pot filtered down even more if they were to join.

However their primary reason for joining won't be the money (they make enough as an independent, although less then they would in the B10. But the extra money wouldnt be worth it since they would have to balance that against an alumni base that donates a ton of money and wants absolutely no part of a conference. The polling the last time around was something like 90% against). It all comes down to a home for the Olympic sports. If they can maintain a home for those sports, they won't join. If the Big East were to implode, then you may see some movement from ND.

In many ways this probably comes down to Texas. If Texas stays put, then the Big East survives and ND stays independent. Maybe the B12 loses Mizzou or Nebraska to the B10, but a massive shift would probably be avoided.

Obviously we have no idea how all of this is going to play out, so I haven't really come up with an opinion quite yet. However, it would be rather nice to have Texas and Oklahoma in the Pac 10/whatever they want to call it.
