    2010 Winter Olympics Thread

    Hello everyone,

We're one month away from the 2010 Winter Olympics from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The games of the XXI Winter Olympiad will be held on Feburary 12-28, 2010.

    The websites: http://www.vancouver2010.com, http://www.nbcolympics.com and http://espn.go.com/olympics.

If you want to post about the 2010 Winter games from sports outside of hockey like figure skating, speedskating, etc. you can do it here.

The Olympic Ice Hockey thread is here: http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread.php?t=121734

Watch out for Lindsey Vonn. She's the face of USA Skiing, not Bode Miller.

I look out for Lindsey Vonn as well. Julia Mancuso and Ted Ligety. Hopefully, the U.S. ski team improves their performance in Vancouver and overcome their disaster in Torino, but they won't catch the Austrians who are the best in skiing.

I also look out for Lindsey Jacobellis in SBX where she wants to redeem herself after her hot dog that cost her the gold in Torino four years ago.

No Canadian broadcast here in Seattle either!

So, unless I can work some magic via stream torrent, I'm stuck with NBC's sh*tty coverage of events that will be tape delayed even thought we live 150 miles from the site of the games.

Wonder if NBC will "accidentally" have a "LIVE" sign in the corner of their screen again for West Coast viewers?

I'm really just as mad at CBC as I am at NBC. The last few years CBC has lost the CFL, the Olympics and the even the hockey night in Canada theme song. Sigh.

I think he was saying that we could watch online, but that website will probably be blocked to U.S. viewers.

Kind of doubt Comcast has any interest in adding CTV, since they own NBC now.

Bode Miller is back again although I'm not sure if he's favored in his events or not. Apolo Anton Ohno is back in short track...Im assuming he's favored to win his events. We have a few real good long track speedskaters--Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick--both are favored to win medals. We usually kick ass in snowboarding...I know that Shaun White kid is back again.

We could medal in the biathalon which never happens.

    Womens Hockey will medal

Hannah Kearney is the favorite to win moguls.

I'm sure some figure skater will steal our hearts. Funny how no one can name one outside of the month of February every 4 years yet it becomes the biggest water cooler conversation during the olympics.

For the women, the South Korean is a lock for the gold, but an American male is the current world champion though his name escapes me at the moment.

Full TV listings are now available for the Games.

I plan on taking a week of vacation time during the Olympics, which will allow me plenty of time to watch just about everything. So pumped.

Actually, I never had time to take my 3rd week of vacation time last year, so I've been told I have to take a week before March -- which is juuuust perfect!

I'm in the minority...but I really never have any issues with how NBC handles their coverage. They try to show marquee events live in primetime, but the fact is the majority of events are held late morning or during the afternoon---tape delay in primetime allows the biggest audience to watch the events.

In 2008, I remember a bunch of us here had to watch US volleyball's gold medal match on a grainy internet feed from Chinese TV. This was because at the time, NBC was showing either rowing or "race walking" (I don't remember which one because it was irrelevant), and none of the other NBC networks had it, nor did their online complementary coverage. It wasn't the only time I was thwarted by NBC during the Olympics that year.

I understand that the 12-hour difference last time was a challenge, but still. Less tape delays, less Bob Costas yakking, more live coverage.

Why can't they show the events live on CNBC or MSNBC and for the people who want to see it live and then just recap it in primetime? The complaint is that the force us to wait till the evening when the results are all over the internet and on ESPN. I'm a big fan of the skiing, both alpine and freestyle. The Moguls and Aerials have been done at night with lights but the Alpine events have to be done during sunlight. Because of this NBC wants you to turn off the computer and the radio and pretend it's live at 9 PM. I checked that NBC TV schedule and not one skiing event will be broadcasted live, even in Saturdays and Sundays.

It seems like the more popular the sport is the less likely it will be on tape. They don't care about Curling and the Biathalon so those events are live in alternate channels. At least Hockey will for the most part be 100% live.

But the live internet stream is the way to go.

For whatever reason I enjoy watching the winter olympics and I pay little attention to the summer games. I guess it's because there's no baseball, it's the middle of the winter, and it's something different to do.

You say show everything live during the day.....what would NBC then televise in primetime between 8pm-1130pm? Doing recap shows does nothing for them.

Which is the majority of people. The network wants to have the events seen by the most people it can.

I mean if you show the men's downhill at 1130am---how much of an audience would you really have at that time? Show it at 9pm---big difference.

Then show something else at 9 PM. It will be 6 PM pacific and there will be plenty of indoor and lighted outdoor events to show live. Stop fooling people that the event is live when it isn't and the results are on the web and ESPN news.

It should be a great Winter Olympics up in British Columbia.

I took a look at all the venues during my trips in Vancouver since they were selected to host the 2010 Winter games and it will be fantastic.

I expect another 1-2-3 finish between the United States, the hosts Canada and Germany with Sweden and Norway the sleepers to break up those three.

I'm with you. I love them. I dont like the Winter games anywhere near as much as I do Summer....but I have the events I watch alot (skiing--esp the downhill and Super G, hockey, luge/bobsled, curling, speedskating). I'll even swallow my man pride and watch figure skating if there is an American w/a chance to win gold.

I won't tell anyone that you love figure skating.

I definitely like summer better than winter too but figure skating is my favorite of all so it's cool. I love the ski jumps too.

I also prefer summer over winter. I get to see more of the Parade of Nations when the Summer Olympic games airs on TV.

In the Winter Olympics, only 75-80 countries compete in the Winter games.

    Summer? 190-200.

Winter is not bad. I like snowboarding (both tricks and SBX), speedskating (both long and short-track), luge/bobsled/skeleton and hockey. Curling is not bad.

Sorry guys, disagree. Winter does way more for me than Summer Olympics. In the winter, I really only dislike figure skating, and that's about it aside from Biathalon and Cross Country Skiing, which are barely on TV. But just about everything else is awesome.

In the summer, I have a hard time with most of the sports, I just can't get into them as much as I do winter.

I love swimming and track + field.....I like both of them alot more then any of the sports in the Winter games....thats why I lean towards the Summer games much more.

Winter by a long shot. I'd take Hockey, Speed Skating, Bobsledding, Luge, Curling over the only sport I watch in the Summer Olympics with is Soccer (and isn't covered by the American TV networks all that well. Since I can't stand basketball and track and field.

Volleyball, swimming, diving, gymnastics, track & field...I just like the summer sports better.

None of them beats figure skating though.

I was so sick of seeing beach volleyball at the last Olympics I stopped watching.
