I can easily see the Yankees becoming serious bidders for this player. It all depends on the final price. I'd rather we draft a good college shortstop in the first round of the draft this June and sign one or two top international free agent shortstops in early July. Better odds imo.

DePaula shutdown right now (could be an injury) and still hasn't passed his second investigation. Getting him could take another couple of weeks.

Hechevarria is ranked ahead of Iglesias by Cuban independent scouting reports, and his defense was considered superior enough that, when they played together, Iglesias was bumped to second base.

I really like Hechevarria, and if his bat even becomes average, he'll be a valuable player. I love his defense.
I'd like the Yankees to come up with a valuation on Hechavarria and if they're in the discussion it can't hurt to add him to the fold.

the kids 20 or 21. give him time, some people need more time to develop
He'll be 22 this year, and he's coming off a season where he struggled so badly in the Sally league (.197/.255/.258) that he was sent back to SS ball, where he didn't improve (.190/.253/.270). That brings his career MiLB line to .218/.282/.283. This is not a case of a guy needing more time to develop. Angelini has shown absolutely 0 hitting ability since becoming a professional. I have no faith, at all, in him suddenly learning how to hit.
Someone did a terrible job scouting that kid.

this isnt the correct thread so im trying not to get it clogged up but some people take longer. hes still very young. im not saying he'll definitely be great, but give him some more time before people should write him off
He was not young for the levels at which he played, and he's 21 and has never shown any offensive ability. At all. Not even a tiny bit. I'm writing him off. For two years he has been an absolutely abysmal player, and he has shown absolutely no improvement. How old does he have to be before we can acknowledge that he's a bust? 25?
A shortstop from the July class will be years away. If this guy is legit he'd definitely fill a need in the system. Seems like most ss draftees get moved (Lassiter, CoJo) so if they think he can stick there I'd grab him.

I would give him 1-2 years. Don't write him off after 2 seasons.
When I saw Angelini this season he wasn't as bad as advertised at short IMO but he seems like he goes to the plate with no plan at all.
I think he has this year and if he continues to not get his OPS well above 600 than he is most likely history by next offseason as other middle infielders with better results need to be given his roster spot. Frankly, if a player can't get his OBP or his slugging above the 300 mark then he's not a major league prospect.

Then you hold out hope for another two years. Going into last season, he needed to make some big strides, and he went backwards in a big way instead. Two seasons where he was an epically poor player, and they're the only two minor league seasons he's had. He's done. He doesn't have any hitting talent. It's ludicrous to pretend that Angelini hasn't completely failed in every way, and he's not young enough to continue pretending he might have a future as a legitimate major leaguer.

I wouldn't, but I will point out that George King is the only one who has reported that he's 21, and he's probably the least reliable reporter who covers the Yankees. Everywhere else I've read about him, they've said he's 19.

It is worth noting that the the ESPN guy seems to think he could play OF. I would assume that the Yanks are trying to determine the same by having him in their camp.
It would lead one to believe that if the Yanks are convinced he can be an OF, and can maintain the power he showed in Cuba, he could be in line for one of the corner OF spots in a couple years.
Keep in mind that Swisher is only signed for this year and next (2012 is an option that is unlikely to be exercised). It is unclear whether Gardner will be the long term answer in LF (or if Jeter will go there). If he goes to the Yanks, he has a good shot to try and establish himself as the possible RF in 2012.

230 seems like 1st base is it but you never know. Hayward is listed at 220 and he covers some ground.
cubanballplayers.com has Ruiz at 6'2", 195 lbs. It also says he was 32 for 41 in stolen bases, leading the league that year, which may bode well for his ability to play the OF.
Where do people think DePaula, Hechavarria and Ruiz would rank in the Yankee farm system if signed? Top fifteen?

Looks like he has speed if he led the league in SB. Just looked up Torri Hunter and he's listed as 6-2, 225 and who covers more ground. The only thing is Torri is 32 .
Iglesias is listed as the RS 9th prospect so I think the SS would for sure be in our top 10.He was ranked as the best SS in Cuba
I would say DePaula would rank in the top 5 and Hechavarria might fall between 10-12 if they signed. Too little info on Ruiz to make any real prediction.

They say Ruiz is up to 230lbs, up about 20-30 pounds since the season ended. That's a lot of weight to gain.
