Here's an article on Carlos Matías
Maybe the worst translated article of all time. I thought the Korean translation of the Chan Ho Park signing was bad.
It did say Matias sat 92-94 and touched 99. A tad skeptical.
"I see Jesus Montero as a potential once-in-a-generation force on offense."
Baseball America article on international signings.

I'd settle for Hechavarria and Matias if the situation with DePaula gets weird, but I'm hoping for all three.
Killer Bs: Betances, Banuelos, Brackman, Bleich

Two of their high-profile signings, Jose Tabata and Arodys Vizcaino, have already netted them Javier Vazquez, Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, while Jesus Montero will become arguably the top prospect in baseball (from a purely offensive standpoint) once Jason Heyward gets 130 big league at-bats.
As long as they sign DePaula I'm happy. One or both of Hechavarria/Matias would be gravy.

From everybody's favorite buscon RE: Matias:
http://twitter.com/WWWUZzCOMHe has a good curveball, he was a SS, I wouldnt worry about Matias stuff he is so small he will repeat his mechanics always.
The only legit concern you can hear besides papers is his size, but on the field he is the real deal, he will be a yankee.
"I see Jesus Montero as a potential once-in-a-generation force on offense."
Its time for some news on one of these three guys haha, were all getting antsy in this thread.
Going for back to back WS!
What does him being a SS and him having a good curveball have to do with one another?
Calmer than you are.
Apparently shortstops have better curveballs than other converted IFers.Originally Posted by JavyVazquezIsSick

I think everything the buscon writes comes out of the fear of an international draft. He thinks of the Yanks sign DePaula and Matias there will be an international draft. I think he's nuts.
agreed... in the past year alone, there seems to have been good parity in regards to which teams have signed which high-end talent.. and the yankees have even been outbid on a few occasions
i don't see why the yankees signing 2 more players would suddenly change anything
Truth.
He seems really paranoid.
"I see Jesus Montero as a potential once-in-a-generation force on offense."
He's scared he won't have anything to do. He keeps talking about how the draft ruined baseball in Puerto Rico.

Is the Depaula investigation even concluded yet?Originally Posted by Buzah!

Agreed especially when you consider how many small market teams are involved in international signings. I mean with signings like Chapman to the Reds, Ynoa to the A's, and Sano to the Twins its clearly not the Yankees, Sox, Mets, Cubs, and Dodgers bidding against one another for all the top guys. Yea, most of those teams do their fair share, but there are a lot of active small market teams in IFA.Originally Posted by flymick24

Congratulations and thank you for number 27, Yankees !!!!!!!!!!!!!. 1 game at a time to 28. C'mon, Yankees.
Is that a legit player?
He's the 22 year-old Cuban reliever with a dazzling 6.59 k/9 and a 6.71 bb/9 for a k/bb rate less than 1.00.Originally Posted by yarosh25

A slightly shorter Brackman pre John surgery. Basically, to whom it may concern. The communist system in action, all splash.Originally Posted by Melan-cynic

We already have a guy like this, his name is Harold Garce. Lets see if he even gets out of the rookie leagues with his 100 mph fastball.Originally Posted by Melan-cynic

Yup. 100mph with zero idea where it's going. Didn't he have like a 22.00 bb/9 one season?Originally Posted by NY_GOLDENARMS

Just checked his stats. In 2008, Garce walked 84 batters in 37.2 innings for a sexxy 20.32 bb/9 rate and even sexier 0.38 k/bb.

It's incredible that a guy like Jenrry Mejia signed for $16,500. The scout should be in jail for that felony.

The odds are still with the more higher priced kids. IF not, why have scouts at all? Just sign a bunch and see what sifts out.Originally Posted by Yankee Fan in Boston
I would think, that it would be similiar to the draft, where most of the very best players come from the upper 1/2 of the first round.
Obviously, there are Jorge Posada's out there.
But here are the top 50 ranked players in fantasy baseball. 58% were 1st-2nd round picks and 22% were IFA's.

My point wasn't that the higher-priced kids aren't more likely too succeed, it was that the odds are still pretty steep so the Yankees weren't going to go crazy chasing a guy if they felt his price was higher than they were comfortable paying him. It's one thing to exceed your budget for a guy like CC, it's another to do it for a 16 year old kid.
"Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late" -- Branch Rickey
Thank you all for info on Soto, sounds like a major major project. Depends on the cost though? Would you risk 50-100 K and hope that the kid is a hard worker and learns an off-speed pitch, control, etc.?
