I've read/heard the name of Pepper Johnson as a possible candidate for defensive coordinator. That would definitely be in the Steve Spanguolo mold, and we know Johnson has the pedigree, both with "Giants Pride" and from his apprenticeship with Belicheck.

I don't know enough about what his coaching style is, or if he's prepared to take such a jump.

All indications were that Pepper would be very interested.

As for coaching style, your guess is as good as mine.

Adam_Schefter Giants have approached Jim Haslett about their defensive coordinator job. Sounds like a longshot for now.
Hadn't heard his name in the mix before.

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

^^I t was in todays paper.

Romeo Crennel and Jim Haslett could get their shots at the Giants' vacant defensive coordinator job this week, though the favorite might turn out to be Perry Fewell.

Fewell, the only one known to have interviewed for the job, interviewed for the same job with the Bears Monday. But the former Bills interim coach left Chicago without an offer, keeping the door open for the Giants. Crennel returned from vacation Monday and was planning to return a call to the Giants Monday night. He's also being pursued by the Chiefs, and a source familiar with his thinking said that's his top choice. Haslett, the former Saints and Rams coach, was reportedly contacted by the Giants Monday night.

Haslett is off the list now and Crennel is probably going to KC. Fewell is the leader in the clubhouse right now by virtue of the fact that there are no other candidates.

Romeo Crennel heads to Chiefs, Jim Haslett to Redskins as Perry Fewell likely Giants' last option
    but but..
Regardless of what happens with Fewell, the Giants may also wait for Bob Sutton, the Jets linebackers coach, who reportedly was their "target" from the beginning. They cannot request permission to interview him until the Jets are eliminated from the playoffs.
He should be getting a call Sunday night around 8ish.

Pretty disappointing that they couldn't land Crennel or Haslett over the freakin' Chiefs and 'Skins, although I supposed they both had their reasons.

I guess getting some new, younger blood on this coaching staff is for the best anyway. Whoever they hire, I hope he has a sound plan for fixing this mess on D.

Romeo went to work for Pioli again. Shanahan on offense and Haslett on defense is a pretty good pairing for the 'Skins. That makes me nervous for next year - especially if they get a QB.

It's probably going to be Fewell or this guy Sutton, which is disappointing because there were some decent names on the list and the Giants have to settle for a second-tier replacement.

I dont know a thing about Fewell.....but he has to be better then Sutton. Sutton will be another Sheridan or Tim Lewis.

Don't know anything about Fewell either, but I was hoping for an experienced DC like Jauron or Crennel. Apparently the Giants aren't interested in Jauron so it's not happening.

That's just one year, though. We need some Bills fans to check in here and tell us what we're in for.

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

Well he's gotta be better than Sheridan. I don't think I've watched a Bills game since that snowy Giants game up there in 2007 so I have no idea what kind of style Fewell has...

But again, it's gotta be better than Sheridan...

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

Former Buffalo Bills interim coach Perry Fewell is planning to accept the New York Giants defensive coordinator position on Thursday, according to a league source.

As of late Thursday morning, Fewell hadn't notified Giants of his decision, but the Giants have been informed they can expect to land their man.

Fewell's agreement would be significant on a number of levels. It would give the Giants the man they had been seeking to succeed former defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan. It would also take Fewell away from the Chicago Bears, who at one point were the clear-cut favorite to land him.

It would also remove another candidate from the Bills, who interviewed Fewell for their vacant coaching position.

The Giants fired Sheridan shortly after the regular season ended with back-to-back blowout losses, in which the defense was torched for 41 points by Carolina and 44 points by Minnesota.

Well, I think Buffalo were 4-3...I think. But even still, they were pretty awful defensively so, I am not quite sure what to think of this right now.

I am not excited or disappointed. Its not the slam dunk coach that walks into a room and everyone just immediately shuts the hell up.

Source: Fewell has not made a decision
    By Sean Jensenon January 14, 2010 12:33 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Perry Fewell has not committed to any job, a source with knowledge of the situation told the Sun-Times.

But Fewell is evaluating initial offers from both the Bears and the New York Giants, and is doing his due diligence on both clubs. Since he's never worked for the Giants, Fewell may be doing more legwork on that particular club.

Fewell was the Bears defensive backs coach in 2005.

ESPN reported this morning that Fewell had made a decision and planned to inform both clubs of his decision. ESPN, however, also made clear that the matter was not finalized.

Bettis says Cowher waiting on Giants »

    By Ralph Vacchiano

Bill Cowher wants to be the next head coach of the Giants.

At least, he does according to Jerome Bettis, Cowher’s former running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bettis said the reason Cowher hasn’t returned to coach is because he’s “holding out” for the Giants job to open up. In fact, he told Chris “Mad Dog” Russo today on Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Radio that Cowher would have gotten the Giants’ job in 2008 if Tom Coughlin hadn’t taken the Giants on that magical, Super Bowl XLII run.

“That’s the team that he really coveted,” Bettis said. “This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he’s been very close to them. … He’s known them very well and was on the inside track — before the Giants won the Super Bowl — for that job. And I think he’s holding out for that opportunity if it presents itself.”

The Pittsburgh defense starts and ends with Dick LeBeau. You are kidding yourself if you think Cowher is the man behind that machine.

Cowher is a good coach, but he is overrated. He is on the same level as a Dungy, Reid, and Coughlin.

What did Cowher produce though? Years of playoff appearances, with nothing to show. Much like Coughlin with the Giants and Jags.

And Cowher has lost some absolutely horrible games.

2 Superbowl appearances and 6 Championship game appearances is nothing to spit at.

Every coach loses horrible games..even the great one in New England. The key is consistently getting your teams to those big games.

Next season is going to decide whether Coughlin gets an extension or is axed.

I still get the sense that there are many Giant players who aren't Coughlin biggest fans. but this is the case with all coaches with some players.

Coughlin's tenure here is very mixed. He won a Superbowl but I believe Spagnolo played a huge role in that. More so then Coughlin.
His record of coordinator hiring has been spotty. Spags was a good one. and I have mixed views on Gilbride.
He's taken the team to 4 straight playoff appearances but at the same time his only playoff wins was in that Superbowl year. Every other time they was one and done.
Also the staple of the Giants in his tenure here is get off to a hot start. and have late season collapse. Again the only exception is the Superbowl year.
If not for that SB, he would have been fired a long time ago.

Not saying he's a bad coach, but despite the SB, the results have been eh.

I like the idea of Cowher on this team although it is really uncertain if he would come out of retirement to coach us.

I'm all for giving Coughlin the entire season next year to see where we end up. If we're disappointed again, it's time to move on. Coughlin is up there in age. He's not the long-term solution. I do appreciate everything he gave to us though.

Coughlin's getting next year no matter what, and he should.

Retirement will probably be in the cards for him in the not-too-distant future anyway. He'll be 64 at the start of next season, so I can't imagine he's going to be doing this for too much longer.
