A list of potential Defensive cordinators is in todays paper.
Pepper Johnson, the former Giants linebacker and current Patriots defensive line coach, is not only a possible candidate, he would also be "very interested" in the job, according to two people familiar with his thinkinghttp://www.nydailynews.com/sports/fo...e_up_blue.htmlWhat's not clear is where Johnson sits on Coughlin's short list, which one team source said is actually long. According to various team and NFL sources, it includes several coaches with defensive coordinator experience, including former Bills interim coach Perry Fewell, who was Coughlin's defensive backs coach in Jacksonville (1998-2002) and who will reportedly interview for the job tomorrow.
Other experienced candidates on the list include former Bills and Bears coach Dick Jauron, Coughlin's former defensive coordinator in Jacksonville (1995-98); Jets linebackers coach Bob Sutton (the Jets defensive coordinator from 2006-08) and Dolphins linebackers coach George Edwards (the Redskins defensive coordinator from 2002-03).
It may also include Dom Capers, another of Coughlin's former Jacksonville defensive coordinators, although Capers currently holds that job with the Packers and makes more than $2million per year. Also available is Romeo Crennel, the former Browns head coach and Giants assistant who ran Belichick's defense in New England from 2001-04.

I'm glad the short list appears to have a lot of guys with experience at DC. We all saw what a competent Coordinator can do to a franchise with the Saints and Gregg Williams this season. 8-8 to 13-3.
Its has to be someone who can walk into the room and has immediate respect because of what they have done already.
We dont need another situation where the players bail on the guy like Osi did in Camp.
Romeo is a nice name to put out there..not sure it would happen but still.
"Owning the Yankees," Steinbrenner once said, "is like owning the Mona Lisa."

I agree with that. Man I can't believe how this D went from giving up 294 pts in 2008 to 427 in 2009. Amazing.
I think Romeo would be the first choice since he was a NYG coach and D-cord up in N.E. Is he even working with a team, currently?Originally Posted by b_joseph

Whomever they hire as DC, he better be more of a motivator than Sheridan.
We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are.
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
To that end, while I'd like an experienced coordinator, a guy like Pepper Johnson would be fine as well. The guy's been a player or coach on 5 Super Bowl winners; if that doesn't command immediate respect, not much else will.Originally Posted by b_joseph

We would have to strike quickly with Crennel though...KC want him bad.
Couple questions......Could Tuck play 3-4 End? Could Osi and Kiwi play OLB in a 3-4?

I like the idea of a Romeo era.
Waufle fired..I guess they are going to fire everyone on defense. Let Romeo bring his own crew![]()
"Owning the Yankees," Steinbrenner once said, "is like owning the Mona Lisa."
Vacchiano:LB coach Jim Herrmann, CB coach Peter Giunta, S coach Dave Merritt all still employed by Giants. Probably not for long, though.
Gilbride is the luckiest guy in the world.
"Owning the Yankees," Steinbrenner once said, "is like owning the Mona Lisa."
Why do we need both CB and safety coach? I thought Guinta was in charge of the entire secondary.
Bring back Ted Lilly!

They aren't going to 3-4. That would take years to develop, and no one on the current defensive roster could play it.

How is Gilbride lucky? The offense has been top 10 statistically back to back years now.
Did anyone expect the offense to light it up through the air like it did with Smith, Nicks, and Manningham? They did an awesome job on offense.
Take a look around the rest of the league sheesh. I remember people wanted Ron Rivera a couple of years ago. Now his ass is fired.
The Giants have a top 10 offense, the sooner you realize it, the better.
If we learned anything this year, it's that they can't play 4-3 either.Originally Posted by 161 and River Ave.

That is true, I forgot about Canty. He is most likely the only guy and he would be a DE. This team has no other 3-4 DE or a NT.
You all scream when Tuck or Kiwi go into coverage on a zone blitz, why would you want them as LBs?
Lies, damn lies and statistics. The Giants Defense is also 13th in total Defense this year....Stats have a nice way of not always telling the full story.Originally Posted by 161 and River Ave.
If you just look at the stats..The Giants under Hufnagel was a top 10 offense in the last 2 seasons under him. Now, Gilbride is better but dont thnk stats tell the whole story. The process is everything.
Anyway, we'll never agree on Gilbride, so whats the point.
Remember when we were all excited for Sheridans 5-1-5 formation...haha. The good old days aka 6 months ago.Originally Posted by BonusCantos

Gillbride did a heck of a job this year, given that there were so many question marks going into the season. He may need some help calling or when to call some plays, but he shouldnt be fired.

former Bills interim coach Perry Fewell is due in for an interview with Coughlin today, according to a league source. And while Fewell may not be the only person Coughlin interviews for the coordinator job, a team source said he is a serious candidate. Coughlin usually doesn't waste time with courtesy interviews.Fewell, 47, also comes highly recommended by Dick Jauron, according to a league source. Fewell replaced Jauron, a close friend of Coughlin and another man thought to be on his short list, as the Bills interim coach in mid-November. Before the Bills fired Jauron, Fewell spent 3-1/2 years as his defensive coordinator in Buffalo.http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/fo...ine_coach.htmlFewell has the military background that Coughlin loves, having been an assistant coach at Army in 1987 and again from 1992-94, under Bob Sutton, the Jets' linebackers coach who is also a candidate for the Giants' defensive coordinator job.
What are the thoughts on this guy, can he help?

Unfortunately they don't reflect situational playcalling. The Giants can drive 60 yards, build up stats along the way, and the drive will die on a HB draw on 3rd and 5. Once in a while is understandable but it is a common theme.

Could someone explain the intricacies of a 4-3 vs 3-4? And specifically why certain players fit one model and not the other?
What I gather is it's because you need a big fatty to clog up the middle of a 3-4 front and more athletic linebackers. True? Are there differences with the secondary as well? Someone above mentioned no one on this roster could fit into a 3-4.
If they ask who was our star, give them twenty five names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.
Looks like the guys are upset about Waufle..Strahan said he shouldnt have gone.
Ace - The D-Line in a 3-4 have more responsibility towards the run game because they are going up against 5-6 and sometimes 7 blockers for the opposition.
The MLB's or ILB's have to support them and therefore go up against the opponents O-Line more. Ray Lewis spoke about this one time when he said he prefers the 4-3 defense because he avoids having to mix it up with the Big boys up front.
The OLB's are the main pass rush threat and have to be able to do that and cover in the open field....the good ones, as you know just pile up the sack numbers like nobodies business. Ware is the prime example for that.
DT is a monster position because that player must be a beats in order for it to work.
To put it simply...if you are small, you aint gonna fit in a 3-4 defense. Boley would not work at all for example.

Thanks, B-Joe!
My limited (and very poor) knowledge of it comes from playing Madden.![]()

My complete lack of understanding of defense has kept me from buying Madden since 2000. It just wasn't fun always getting beat because I don't know what defense is used to stop what.Originally Posted by ace
What is the difference between nickel & dime?
I get the personnel on the field and at least how to use it in the game, but as far as assembling a real life unit to execute it, I'm totally lost. Since in Madden you just have to go by overall rating of the player, not stuff like size, strength, speed, game film...etc.
Nickel = 5 D-backs
Dime = 6 D-backs
Since I use the 3-4 in Madden, when I need an extra DB I usually go with the 2-4-5, since I can still have my four linebackers on the field while adding a third corner. Typically on obvious passing downs, like 3rd and long. This is a big reason why I like to have a more than adequate third CB on my roster.
If they ask who was our star, give them twenty five names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.
The way I see it as far as madden goes, Nickel is good if you want coverage in a passing situation where you know the opposition needs about 5 to 10 yards and are sending out 3 or 4 receivers.Originally Posted by RhodyYanksFan
Dime is good if you know the opposition is going to pass for over 10 yards i.e 3rd and 15 type scenarios and they send out 5 receivers.

Plays work = nice job by players
Play doesn't work = bad call by Gilbride
This offense is going to be here as long as Coughlin is here. You all need to realize that. If Gilbride is fired/goes to coach somewhere else, Palmer will take over and use the same exact playbook.
This is an offense that has been consistently in the top tier of scoring year in and year out, went to the playoffs 4 out of 5 years, and would have gone again if it weren't for the defense. They won a Super Bowl, and developed Manning into the upper echelon of QBs.
The Giants defense is not 13th in the league, they are 30th. Get your numbers right b joseph. You are looking at yards allowed, which is a complete BS stat. The stats don't lie about the offense. 8th in total points, and because you love yards, they are also 8th in total yards.
The next argument will be, "well they didn't score against good defenses." I'll end the argument right now by saying they scored 33 and 31 points in both games against the number 2 ranked Cowboys defense.
The brain fart Gilbride had this year was late in the Charger game, and that is also on Coughlin. The offense did an awesome job this year, especially when you consider how one dimensional they became in some of these games because of the defense.

That brain fart cost us the game. Something that stats and offensive ranking will not reflect so bringing them up is pointless.Originally Posted by 161 and River Ave.
