The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

Jamie started the 2009 thread about an hour after the '08 season ended, so this is late in comparison. Besides, this past season was a disaster, so out with the old and in with the new. I'm ready to put it behind me.

Though it's still far off, the Giants will be at a crossroads in the 2010 season. I expect there to be some offseason changes, but the Super Bowl XLII meal ticket has officially expired. This thing can go one of two ways, and it's quite simple: either they'll get back on track or they won't. The former will get the Giants back into contention as a contender while the latter will likely lead to even wider changes to the team.

What do we have to look forward to in 2010? What are your hopes (or fears)? What say you, Giants fans?

With the 15th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select...

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

Defense, defense, defense. Specifically a LB. The Giants need a bigtime playmaker at the LB position....whether its a pass-rusher or simply a guy who makes plays all over the field. All the Giants need to do is look at the team they share a stadium with, and look at all the talent they have at LB---Harris, Pace, Scott....the Giants need a guy (or two) like that.

I thought Boley would be that guy, but he wasnt this year. Hopefully he can stay healthy and rebound in 2010.

Also need help on the D-line, cornerback, safety (esp if Phillips's injury is chronic) and perhaps some depth on the O-line.

They dont really need anything on offense. They are set at QB, RB, WR.

    Jesus Montero since June 1 (286 at-bats):
    .325/.386/.605/.991
    July 1 (182 at-bats):
    .348/.417/.658/1.075

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

I agree I think they are set at offense skill positions but that defense needs a MAJOR overhaul. LBs are just awful, we need a top of the line MLB that can wreck havoc everywhere, hopefully Phillips can come back and be great but we need to draft LBs and DBs come the draft in the early rounds, then hopefully steal someone late for the OL because they are getting much older and more fragile it seems(Mckenzie). Big offseason for the GMen and I am looking forward to what Reese and Co have up their sleeve.

Not soon enough. I would have fired him at halftime of the Carolina game.

I think it's 15th, but it could be up to 13th depending on tiebreakers.

Agreed. He was particularly awful against the Eagles allowing his boys to give up a combined total of 85 points in two games. Just awful.

I mean, most points allowed by the Giants in 43 years. If this guy doesn't get fired, then either he's made of 100% pure Teflon or he has incriminating photos of Coughlin and/or Reese.

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

That's a rough road schedule for next year. I have no idea how those teams will be next year, of course, and looking at it now is always pointless...but Minnesota, Seattle, Indy, and GB are some of the toughest places to play on the road, year in and year out.
If they ask who was our star, give them twenty five names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.

Oh I'm sure he'll get fired. I was just looking back at the Giants schedule and I realized that they'd given up 40 spots to the Eagles twice. Not a good sign when your divisional rival is hanging 5+ touchdowns on you.

I wasn't sure if Sheridan would get the can or not if they made the playoffs but thanks to a couple of gutless games at the end there they sealed his fate.

This season has almost been surreal. To be honest, looking at the schedule back in August I was almost wondering where they'd lose a game. Over the past 11 weeks I started to wonder where they'd win a game again. NFL is crazy.

I just hope Reeese and Coughlin can find a suitable replacement and vet out problems in the locker room.

Thank God. I was concerned that they might actually keep him.

    That road schedule is brutal.

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

Technically, it's still unofficial, but the media seems pretty convinced that it will happen. If not today, then in the very near future. If anyone still thought this guy would have his job after the way they played the last two weeks, they're crazy.

Mara just said in his press conference that he was upset by "the lack of effort." He sounds pretty annoyed. "The status quo is not acceptable."

    ***
Edit: A reporter asked Mara if Coughlin said he wanted to keep his coaching staff in tact, would he be OK with that? Mara basically said that he would normally like the HC to make those decisions, but that after this season, it "would be a tough pill to swallow." So long story short, no; assistant coaches will be fired.

The much derided Gilbride should stay. The offense looked quite good this year and Gilbride can't make Manningham stop dropping the ball.

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

Next year is huge for the Giants as Coughlin's contract is up after the 2011 season and NFL coaches usually don't become lame ducks for a season so if they don't marketably improve next year, TC might be gone.

  25. #25

Re: The Official 2010 New York Giants Thread

Coughlin is definitely on the hot seat next year. They've lost a majority of their games since Plaxico shot himself.

i agree. the offense wasnt the problem, it was the defense... Eli had an exceptional year, with young and inexperienced wide outs.

i think after the game which the Saints whooped the Giants, the giants' defense has looked clueless and showed inability to adjust to the opposing offense throughout games

    first 5: 5-0
    finished: 3-8

We are not the Redskins who don't wait for the final buzzer to hack their coach. Our front office has meetings and will have a one on one with any coach who is fired before sending out a press release. Sheriden will not be back. Let JR, TC and the Mara's handle it.

So Mara clearly had Sheridan's defense in mind when he said, "When you have that many games where you get blown out, there's something wrong, and it means that something has got to be done."

That's the easy part, now address the real reasons why the Giants quit mid-season.

It's a good first step. Now the rest of the defensive staff can take a hike, and they can work on changing personnel.

The MN game was just a beat down, I agree. But as for the Panthers game, it's tough to score when your recievers keep dropping the ball and when the other team is holding on to the ball and running it down your throat the whole game.

He will get a job somewhere else, coaches always seem to land on their feet. Its possible he was a good linebackers coach and just couldnt make the jump to running a whole defense, just like a lot of coordinators cant run a whole team.

He had to go no doubt about it, I just hope the players will be able to adjust to having 3 coordinators in 3 years.

They need someone with a strong personality to come in and lay down the law.

On a similar note, I was glad to see how fired up Mara was -- ownership is not going to put up with what happened this year, and that is a good thing.

Well he knows he just raped his fan base for 4 or 5 figure PSLs so maybe he feels a little guilty having an underachieving 8-8 team for that.
