Winn's peripherals point to last year being more of a fluke, though and in 2007 and 2008 Winn put up OPS+ numbers that were even better than what Melky did last year. I think that Winn and Melky are at about the same performance level now (although Melky will likely play a lot more), although Melky's salary is higher and likely to increase

It would stupid, not ironic, if we traded Melky for Winn. It would also be stupid if we traded Arod for Lowel, but that didn't happen either.

I generally agree with what you said. I wouldn't be surprised if Winn put up better numbers this year than Melky. 2009 for Winn was probably just an off-season. I think that Melky as he moves into his late 20s will increase his OBP and power numbers, the latter perhaps substantially. That has happened to a lot of players including Winn who was a poor offensive player in his early to mid 20s.

I haven't done any research on this, but I'd wager that even more players who were poor offensively in their early to mid 20s simply crapped out.

You might be right, I haven't researched that, either. Based on casual observation, it seems clear that a substantial number of players didn't seem to get it until their mid to late 20s.

The difference is Winn played for TB when they were a last place team annually.

Re: 2010 Curtis Granderson Performance Thread

Hope this isn't already posted but it's a good article on Granderson.

Granderson nodded his head in recognition when manager Joe Girardi told the team on Feb. 23 that every opponent sees a bull's eye on the Yankees' backs. Now, Granderson is with a team that believes in looking for solutions for every problem. So his first spring training will have as much tinkering as it has anticipation. He has been fitted with contact lenses, at the Yankees' suggestion, after they determined his vision was 20/30, and he is on an intense program with hitting coach Kevin Long to improve his approach against lefthanders. And he has said he'd accept left field and any spot in the batting order.

"We've been doing some drills," Granderson said, after going 0-for-2 in his first at-bats against lefties on March 3. "Once I get some at-bats, we can see where we are."

He had three hits in his first 15 a-bats going into the game against the Braves on Thursday night.

well ......... IMO coke was no loss, ian kind of a spare part if our guys who shall remain nameless (*cough*) pitch as expected, so ajax was the only risk element in the trade, and he's green with (supposedly) a top celing equal to grandy with less power. so i think the trade was still a coup for us, but it remains to be seen how long can work w CG to fix things vs LHPs. i am cautiously optimistic, and not only because i like coach and player. his total suckitude vs LHPs has not been a career constant, and it seems both have identified specific problem areas, so it's specific items to correct and work on, not just the fluff of good intentions. so color me "cautiously optimistic" that he will kick ass.

I don't think I'm going out too far on a limb to say I don't think AJax will ever be the player Granderson is. AJax's lack of power combined with well below average contact skills doesn't bode well for his MLB career. Sure he's young and will probably improve, but his MiLB stats don't come close to measuring up to Grandy's.

As for the other Yankee players in the deal I don't see that much talent was lost. IPK is fortunate to be pitching in the NL West because he and his 90 MPH FB didn't look viable in the AL East. Phil Coke was a decent LHRP, but certainly not irreplaceable.

i'm not sure that is accurate. personally, i'm expecting 28 plus homeruns with a batting average around .270 while getting on base at a .345 clip. anything over the that, is a bonus. i do believe we gave up too much but not by a lot.

Career year? Granderson posted an OPS+ of 135 way back in 2007, If he actually find a way to do better than that and plays plus defense, he could win the MVP. If he somehow equal his 2008 performance, I think folks will be thrilled

I for one haven't been as excited by a non superduperstar joining the Yanks in quite some time.

We'll see what Ajax amounts to, but I'm really not sure how we are going to lose that much on this deal.

THis is exactly what the Yankees should do: give up the "could possibly be X in a few years" for the "already is X". If you have to lose a Ian Kennedy in the process, so be it.

I sure hope you all are right. Watching him play CF, I think AJax is a better defensive player right now. CG definitely has more power and I agree with other posters' observations that AJax may never blossom into a solid ML player. If CG hits 270 with 28+ HRs, I would be marginally satisfied. But I am looking for a better average than that. If he hits 290, even if he has to lost some power, it was a great trade.

That's dumb. You need to learn the lesson that OBP is way more important than BA.

A 270 BA and 28+ HR's would results in an offensive season roughly equivalent to his 2008 season. Such a season would also be about Damon production (2008-2009), which I'm sure you're fine with. And he's not going to have a BA over .290 unless he gets really lucky.

He can get his .290BA (still a bit high, but with Fenway and NYS, yeah).

Mostly because with Winn and CG, we'll actually be able to bench him against LHPs.

Detroit didn't have that kind of luxury.

If Kevin Long is as good as he (and others) claim he is, and can correct flaws in CG performance against lefties, then I will be happy to join in the Kevin Long hero worship. I sure hope that is how it works out.
Can you just admit you dislike outfielders with low batting averages, regardless of how productive they are? Oh wait, you already did

Re: 2010 Curtis Granderson Performance Thread

I'm going to say it now before the year starts so it's not a "second guess" or "hindsight 20 20" on my part.

I didn't like the trade. Now I hope I'm wrong and Granderson becomes a wonderful player here and he helps us win a WS.
But kind of didn't understand the trade.

Granderson looks like he's going to hit towards the end of the lineup cause his OBP isn't good enough to bat high.
Well what the heck was wrong with Austin Jackson hitting towards the bottom of your lineup?

Honestly the only edge Granderson right now has on what Jackson is projected to be is power.

I'm hearing glowing reviews how good Jackson is in CF. Which I knew since I follow the minor leagues. And his arm isn't bad either. Hell I'll say it; Austin Jackson is probably a better CF then Curtis Granderson.

Granderson looks like he will give you power but his BA will be around .270 (he's only hit .300 once in his career) with an OBP worst then Cano's. Or at least around the same.
Will give you triples and doubles too.

But you need to tell me that outside of the power, Jackson can't do that? He has hit at every level outside of Charleston.

    Both strike out a ton.

Like I said I hope Granderson works out but looking at his career stats there's nothing that blows me away and that makes may think: NO WAY AUSTIN JACKSON COULD EVER BE AS GOOD AS CURTIS GRANDERSON.

It's not like he's Grady Sizemore....

saying "outside of the power" is like saying "outside of the engine," a charger and a honda civic are pretty much the same car

AJax doesn't walk a ton either, so their OBP is likely around the same, assuming AJax can actually hit 300 in the majors. If you assume that they get on base the same amount of time, then CG's SUBSTANTIAL POWER (tons of HR, doubles, triples) makes an immense difference.

    Also, AJax's D is overrated.

Sorry still not seeing where he's a significant upgrade and will be in the future.

Besides most of the Yankee power/offense is supplied by the infield and DH.
It would not have killed them imo, to have a kid in CF.

Not to mention you have a kid like Montero coming up in the next year who's projected to be a power hitter. and the Yankees could easily sign a corner outfielder in the off season who hits for power.

Gardner. better D than Ajax, historically better OBP than Ajax, obviously more speed.
