Yankees beat the curse of 103!

This years team became just the second major league team in history to win 103 games AND win the World Series. Only the 1968 Tigers were also able to do it.

4 previous Yankees teams have won 103 games, 1942,1954,1980 & 2002 and only the 42 team even made it to the Series.

There was a 103 curse? Think the Yankees appreciated it in 1962.

And that stupid Indians team that beat the Yankees out by 8 games in 1954 ... they go on to get swept by the Giants. Yankees would have probably beat the Giants like a drum if they had played them ... considering since moving to Yankee Stadium ... the Yankees had never lost again to a Giants team in World Series play. Yanks were on 16 - 7 roll in games against those guys since 1923.

Gee ... 103 wins. I seem to remember that the Giants had also won 103 games in earlier times ... ... and I wonder what happened to them, in the World Series, when they last had those 103 wins?

Good thing the Yankees did not win one more game in 36 & 37

Giants won 103 games in 1912,1962 and 1993. Two WS losses and out of the playoffs in 93.

Of course in 1962 the Giants needed two wins in the playoff with the Dodgers to reach 103. If they had a one game playoff in the NL back then the Giants wind up with 102.

That is an amazingly crazy fact though. Win 103 games and not win it all!

And ... I was kidding around a little when speaking of and wondering about the 103 wins the Giants had in 1912.

As the season wore down I knew the Yankees had a shot for 103. I actually was not too happy when they won that last game at Tampa Bay.

But everything did turn out okay anyway

I was wondering how long you were sort of worried about this 103 win factor. Whelp ... you got your win. Joined the 1968 Tigers.

Five times 103 wins lost in the World Series ... and five times a team winning 103 didn't even make the Series ... including the Yankees that you mentioned for 2002 AND the A's won also had won 103 in 2002.

    BOLD - WS WINNER
    BOLD/COLOR - 103 CURSE BUSTERS!
BLUE - TEAMS THAT WON 103 ... BUT DIDN'T EVEN MAKE SERIES.

    1912... Giants 103 ...Red Sox 105
    1942 ...Cardinals 106 ...Yankees 103
    1954... Giants 97 ...Indians 111....... Yankees 103
    1962... SF Giants 103... Yankees 96
    1968 ...Cardinals 97... Tigers 103
    1980 ...Phillies 91 ...Kansas City........ Yankees 103
    1990 ...Reds 91 ...Oakland 103
    1993 ...Toronto 95... Phillies 97........SF Giants 103
    1999 ...Braves 103 ...Yankees 98
    2002 ...SF Giants 95 ...Angels 99 ........ Yankees 103 ... Oakland 103
    2009... Phillies 93 ...Yankees 103

Re: Yankees beat the curse of 103!

I've known about the Yankees not winning the series when they win 103 games during the regular season for a long time.

I did some research over the summer and was really amazed that only one other team had won 103 games and the WS in the same season.

By the way the Yankees have never lost a post season series in a year ending in 8 & 9. 16-0 and counting.

But why would you have been so worried about the "103 curse" when you came into this year's post-season with a .831 winning percentage in post-season games for the 8 & 9 year-ending teams?

Well something had to give! No way of knowing which way it would play out. Going into this season the Yankees were also 0-2 in post season series not played at the "Original" YS, (1921-22).

The Yankees could have swept the DS and LCS and lost the Series in 7. 10-4 would have been around a .700 winning percentage.

Now if you want a real curse. No team has won 116 regular season games and the WS!

Thanks for showing this. I only now see that I missed putting down the 97 wins the Phillies had. Just fixed it.

But what makes it even worse was not making it there at all ... being stopped by the Yankees in five games!

Imagine the old Cubs team that won 116 and then lost the World Series. They won those 116 games while losing 10 less times then what Seattle did! Chicago was 116 - 36 3 .763

And the Cubs lost to the "Hitless Wonder" White Sox that year. Could you imagine what a Cubs fan had to put up with that offseason!

That 103 win Yankees team in 1954 was the only Stengel managed team that won 100 or more games. And they missed the WS!

That Yankee team was above .500 against the entire league that year, with the exception of Cleveland, against whom the went 11-11. The Red Sox actually decided that race by going 2-20 against the Indians that season.
fluke n. A lucky or improbable occurrence, with the implication that the occurrence could not be repeated.

That 2-20 record is deceptive. We also tied them, twice.

Since the Sox were 69-85 that season they lost over a quarter of their games to one team!

If the Braves had stayed in Boston.(They had intended not to move until at least 1954) They might well have forced the Sox to move out since by 1954 they had a much better team. Braves only moved in March of 1953 because they were afraid that the Browns were going to move to Milwaukee before they could. Parnell had intended to give it one more year in Boston since he knew he had a lot of young players (Aaron, etc) ready to join the team. And MLB had awarded the All-Star game to the Braves in 1953.

Wasn't the 2002 team very nearly required to play a rainout makeup game the day after the scheduled end of the regular season in order to determine home field advantage vis a vis Oakland? I believe if the A's had gotten to 104 wins, under the rules then in effect, the Yankees were going to be forced to play on Monday to see if they could get to 104, which would have put them in a tiebreaker with Oakland, which they'd have won (5-4 Yankees during that season). As I recall there was a great feeling of relief among the Yankees and their fans when they didn't have to play that game. If only they'd known about the Curse of 103!

Yes, You are right about that. Thinking back to that year I wanted the Yankees to play that game so they would not finish at 103!
