Maybe this is the English major in me, but I'm curious about this word. It's defined as "a light cylindrical box for holding light articles of attire (especially hats)." How did this translate to baseball usage? And why is it literally the only word anyone ever uses to describe a ballpark that plays small?

A bandbox is a term for the small cramped area that an orchestra must squeeze into for a concert.

From what I have seen, the bank is easier to hit HR's in. Maybe not to RF, but left and center seem much easier.

Bandbox also means a small, enclosed place. It kills me when the term is applied to the new Yankee Stadium because it's used incorrectly. Balls may fly out of Yankee Stadium now, but it's not because it's small. A lot of these sports knuckleheads don't know how to use the English language.

And they couldn't shut up about the food all night....They have cheesesteaks and an outside bbq pit for ribs. Not that big a deal. I'm sure their food is good, but I have to commend the new food service at NYS. Overall, I'd say it's a huge improvement from the old regime.

Citizen's Bank is actually a really nice park. I saw a random Phils-Marlins game a few years ago when I was in town and really enjoyed myself. No complaints from me.
I just hate the way that terms come into vogue in baseball, and for a while no one in the media or fandom will use a different word.

I agree with you fully, except when someone uses all of them in one sentence: His gritty electric stuff tamed the bandbox.
New cliche: GREASY HEAD, for guy we should walk every time he comes up.

Pesky's pole is like 15 feet from 1st base.. I've seen more cheap foulballs curve around that thing that I care to mention. Almost as many check swings excuse me HR's by Punch and Judy hitters that would be an out in a real ballpark with a real leftfield.

Ebbets Field is where I first heard the term bandbox. Today, there is the Phillies new stadium, Baltimore's stadium and of course, left field at Fenway...all referred to as bandboxes. As far as the new Yankee stadium is concerned, I think you have to wait and see if next year brings the same results of homers hit as this year before you refer it to a bandbox.
