    RIP - Tipper's Dad

After a long battle with Alheimer's my father passed away early Sunday morning. We count ourselves blessed that the last stages came on quick and his decline was very rapid and not drawn out for years. Until 6 weeks ago he was abulatory, contenent, and living at home with mom who had been his primary caregiver the past 6 years. About 10 days ago he stopped eating and by last Wednesday had stopped drinking.

He remembered who he was and who mom was up until the end. And while he mixed up the names of his kids (my brother & sisters), he was doing that anyway long before he had Alzheimer's, he always remembered we were his kids.

He was the best father I could have ever hoped for and he will be missed but not forgotten.

Dad was a life long Yankee fan bron the year the original stadium opened and the Yanks won thier first of 26 world titles. He served in the Navy Aircorp in WWII where he saw action in Africa and the Mediteranian.

He always said his best jobs were working the scorebroad for the Newark Bears and selling hot dogs (or is hot dobs?) there as well since he got to eat all the left over hot dobs that weren't matched to buns after the game. Apprently the buns were counted but not the dogs, go figure.

I know he'll be looking down us and will have the best seat in the house.

    Re: RIP - Tipper's Dad

Thanks for all the well wishes which are really appreciated.

He did have a full life with a wonderful wife (Mom) who he was married to for 62 years. Raised 4 kids who he was able to setup better than he himself was and 9 fantastic grand kids.

He lost his own father when he was just 16 or 17 and had to forgo a partial scholarship to Duke to play tailback so he could go to work to help support his mother and 4 sisters so me having him for so long was really a blessing indeed.

Thanks again for all the support.

Tripper: So very sorry for your loss, but grateful for the lack of long suffering. As the son of a wonderful Mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a little over a year ago, my heart and prayers go out to you, your Mom, and family. I pray my Mom's ending is as swift as your Dad's was, as bad as that may sound. I saw my Aunt and my wife's Grandma deteriorate and linger for many months before they passed, and it was very painful for everyone.

Anyway... God Bless you all and thanks for the touching tribute to your Dad. Always remember the wonderful life he had and shared with his loved ones.

Very sorry to hear about you mom. It's a terrible disease that no one should ever have to experience.

I've been asked to do the eulogy, something thankful I've never had to do before an hopefully some thing I never have to do again.

Tripper, I am sorry I got on you in another post. I have responded to that post with some additional comments and thoughts.

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. He seems to have led a full life and was a lifetime Yankee fan.

My own Dad was born in 1904 in Newark. He was a lifetime Yankee fan as is most of my five kids and about half (maybe more of my 12 grandkids). My Dad and Mom attended the first game in YS when they were still courting. He took me to many Yankee games, the first one was in August 1948 when the Yankees beat the Philly A's 12-8 with Yogi homering for the Yanks and "Ozark Ike" Gus Zernial for the A's. I will never forget seeing Connie Mack roaming the dugout in his blue/grey pinstriped suit waving a rolled up scorecard in his (I think) left hand.
It seems like we share many similar memories.
My Dad passed away almost twenty years ago of a stroke and it took me fully five years to get over it

Some of my fondest memories were spent in my Aunt and Uncles home on Sundays during the baseball season in Veterans (he was a WWII veteran) housing in Newarks Wheequackic park (my spelling here is attrocious, but Newark residents will know what I mean). TV was in its infancy and we always had both the TV and radio on listening to( and watching) the Yankee Dodger and Giants games. Our family had members who were fans of each of the teams. The discussions were heated, especially after my Dad and Uncles had a few libations.

Anyway my memories are still strong and I mention this only to help you remember and honor your Dad and to thank him for all the memories and help he has given to you.

    Condolances.

Sorry to hear about your dad. May he rest in peace. Sounds like you have some wonderful memories.

Seeing my mother deteriorate from that horrific disease, I can only say it was a blessing when she peacefully passed away. I don't wish Alzheimers (especially the later stages) on my worst enemy.

    Re: RIP - Tipper's Dad

My sincere condolences on the passing of your dad.
Your post was a very nice tribute to someone who sounds like a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. May he rest in peace.

In your eulogy, make sure to include some of the everyday things - and ask your siblings for any special memories they have, any funny moments. I know it sounds like it'd be impossible to smile on that day, but that's why memories are so powerful. That's what keeps our loved ones in our hearts forever. I'm sure you'll do him justice with your eulogy, and will make him proud.
