Re: JDPNYY's Question of the day - Sunday 9/6/09

    Cosby can be, yes.

But I think what's funnier are Bill Cosby impersonations (provided they're done well).

Yes. Bill Cosby: Himself was on a few weeks ago. I hadn't seen it in years and I laughed just as hard as the first time I saw it.

Re: JDPNYY's Question of the day - Sunday 9/6/09

    Just a small aside.

I had a different question lined up for today, but as I thought about Billy Crystal's journey from funny to not funny (in my and others opinions) I found that he's morphed into this boring story teller (as Bill Cosby has always been - again, in my opinion). I have always found Cosby to be a complete bore and totally unfunny.

Anyway, I'll use the original question of today at another time.

Carry on with your answer about Bill.

Fat Albert and Picture Pages were fine, but Cosby seems to think mugging for the camera is HILARIOUS. Oh, but it's not.

Re: JDPNYY's Question of the day - Sunday 9/6/09

Bill Cosby was funny a long time ago - back in the 60's. His routines about he and his brother Russell, their parents (and "parenting" back then ------- "What? Hire some stranger to babysit my kids?? I'd rather leave them alone"), his great "Chickenheart" routine, etc.
    He WAS very funny.

    Not so much after that.

Doesn't mean he's not someone who has done good in his life, and tries to give back.

Yes, he is very funny and I loved his show from the 90's. The only time he isn't is when he decides to get too serious about social issues which can be very controversial and even though I agree most of the time with his positions he sometimes can go too far.

I loved him in the 60's. The making fun of parents stuff, Fat Albert, etc.
I didn't own or watch TV in the '70's, except Yankee baseball.
I was out of the country in the '80's.
I came back in '94, and he wasn't funny in the 90's or 2000's.
I never saw his TV show, or nor have I watched any other TV show with a laugh track (except John Larroquette Show, I liked that one).

Is that the one that shows up on HBO every now and then? Yeah, that one is very, very funny.

The one thing I always appreciated about Cosby is always kept it clean.... which is a rarity these days.

Carlin was a genius but even with him I thought near his end he became a cranky old man who was mad at the world and stopped being funny. There's a fine line between a humorous rant that's on topic and, well, just being miserable about life.

He's the David Ortiz of comedy... for some reason, that managed to stay off the shows like Extra and shows like Nancy Grace..if it was another comedian, forget it -- for some reason, he gets some kind of pass..

I think he's somewhat powerful in Hollywood. I know Terrence Howard accused him of blacklisting him for several years because he had a disagreement with him on the Cosby set...didn't work for a few years.

He also used to make negative comments about the dirty humor used by guys like Howard Stern -- as some sort of moral police, yet it comes out later he cheated on his beloved Camille for years and had an illegitimate child...

yet he seems to skate on by for some reason...

I go with Maynerd and muggs. Noah was a great bit, and Cosby was pretty funny back then. Of course, that was something like 45 years ago.

Muggs, I don't give extra points for staying clean. Funny is what matters. IMHO, Richard Pryor stood head and shoulders above everyone else - but it sure wasn't by staying clean.
