One of my friends saw him in concert about a year ago and said even in his 90's he was still an incredible performer.Originally Posted by Jersey Yankee

Les Paul was a giant. In this day and age when so many lesser talents are thought of as musical geniuses (JL, you know who I'm talking about)... well, Les Paul was the real deal. What a legacy of music and innovation (especially innovation) he left behind.Originally Posted by Jersey Yankee
Thank you, Les, and may you rest in peace.

He was 94, Tara. I learned of Miles Davis' music after seeing him honored at the Church by Citicorp Center in Manhattan (54th & Lex), but after George Burns and Bob Hope passed on, I thought I'd sworn off discussing celebrity deaths.Originally Posted by penguin4
I waited until hearing the 3rd "breaking news" announcement of Les Paul's death before posting this.
When Muhammad Ali passes, let's just say that I'll take a short break from here. Whenever a big part of one's youth passes on, it's indeed a sad day.

Les Paul was at least a lesser G-d.
I had a guy give me a 57 Les Paul Goldtop gitter in exchange for some stereo components. I never learned to play it, but I still have it here. Worth A LOT more know than the audio gear, too! I should put it in the hands of someone who will play it now.

i just visited the hendrix / EMP museum out in seattle this week. i saw a few of his namesake guitars...some of the absolute originals.
what a great place to visit.
and RIP to a legend.
Sad day, but he hung around and performed for way longer than anyone could have predicted. I hope my life is as long and as full as his was.
Let the kids play.
Excellent, excellent museum. I agree.Originally Posted by ojo

Not to change the subject, and no reason to choose this thread to do it but...
Do you think "so many" celebrities are dying "right now" because its about 3/4th of a life from when tv and news reporting and radio became monstrous parts of society?
I guess im saying, it seems like so many people we know are dying because we know so many more people.
Also obviously RIP Les Paul

Great player and a legend in the music world. I used to have a Les Paul, wish I would've never sold it. RIP.

The 1950s Les Paul models are still some of the most popular and influential guitar designs, even after almost half a century. That fact alone says alot about the creative genius that was Les Paul.
RIP, Les.
When was it that Les Paul was honored? Miles Davis has been around forever.Originally Posted by Jersey Yankee
R.I.P. Les! I remember back to Les Paul and Mary Ford.

No, it was Miles Davis as the "he" I was referring to. He'd passed around 1994, and I'd seen Bill Cosby, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and many other huge names in jazz, while Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy. I'd never thought I'd ever see those people before, and they were all there below me in the Church. I was floored.Originally Posted by Octoberbaby
Les, I've known of his inventions and stuff, but never knew of his great influence until I'd heard about him on the radio. He was truly a very large influence on rock 'n' roll, especially with the way the electric guitar became increasingly important.

I had the privilege of seeing him and his group at the Iridium 5 years ago.
A wonderful memory of a great artist and innovator.

That sounds like a great event. Have you ever checked out the Jazz Festival. When I was living in New York I used to go. I believe it was in July every year. I saw Dizzy Gillespie, Raasan Roland Kirk, Horace Silver and many others at those events.Originally Posted by Jersey Yankee

A gazillion posts in the Michael Jackson obit thread and just a few handful of posts in this obit thread recognizing the genius of a giant whose contributions to popular music are staggering. Disheartening but I can't say I'm surprised.

I realize Jackson's untimely death and personal "quirkiness" drew people into his obit thread but there was a lengthy discussion in that thread about Michael Jackson's legacy in popular music.Originally Posted by Mantle'sMutt
The contributions of Les Paul or Michael Jackson? It's not even close.
