    Eunice Kennedy Shriver, 88, RIP

I heard it on the radio.

    EDIT:

She was surrounded by family when she passed at Cape Cod.

What a nice and decent person who devoted her life to people with special needs and disabilities. She lived a long and wonderful life and died with her family around her--can you ask more of God than that?

    RIP

Here was a person who truly contributed....made a real difference. It'll be a fine wake. RIP

From the NYT obit in the photo slide show:

Some view Mrs. Shriver's work on behalf of the mentally retarded as the most lasting of the Kennedy family's contributions. Senator Edward Kennedy, left, said in an interview in October 2007: "You talk about an agent of change, she is it. If the test is what you're doing that's been helpful for humanity, you'd be hard pressed to find another member of the family who's done more."

She celebrated one of her brothers winning a US Senate term at least ten times. She stood by her brothers as they announced their candidacy for President of the United States at least four times, and alongside her husband as he ran for VP once. She stood by her family in the wake of unspeakable tragedy. Repeatedly.

Yet, all of that pales in comparison to her personal successes in creating and blossoming the Special Olympics program.

Quite a remarkable lady. Quite a remarkable and indelible impact on our civilization, and our humanity.

"But what people tend to forget...is that being a Yankee is as much about character as it is about performance; as much about who you are as what you do."

Does it make me the minority that I'm under 30 and it does?

You follow history, so you're an exception.

It's interesting what I hear about these great people when they pass on. I've never really followed the Kennedy clan in awhile.

Well, I'm well under 40 but it does to me, but then again, I'm a Kennedy buff.

    RIP indeed...

The funeral is said to be just begining.

RIP to a remarkable lady. The pictures of the special olympians at her funeral are very touching.

Jersey Yankee, I strongly recommend that you become more knowedgeable with the Kennedy clan....especially the brothers and sisters like Eunice Kennedy.
Yesterday, I viewed the moving funeral of Senator Ted Kennedy and it so reminded me of the unbelieveable passing of his two older brothers, John and Bobby. I remember as a young man the impact it left on me and so many others when those two were killed. To understand what this family of wealth has given to this country , you have to read about their lives that even though they were far from perfect and had many shortcomings were still able to do great good in this world that will last a very long time.
