I wanted him in the offseason, I was happy we got him. I think he could fit in with this team.
Defintely. Pretty nice deal by Cashman, getting a super-utility guy like Hairston, while only giving up a minor league catcher who would never make the Yankees roster.Originally Posted by Mark19

ding dong. best utility guy we've had since sojo. i've wanted someone like him, freel or scutaro (pre starting ss days) for years now so glad we finally got him. gotta wonder if theyll resign him at the end of the year with pena's emergence and nady's coming back from surgery...
Yep, good pickup (although shocked it wasn't followed up by immediate DFA for Ransom). I like the versatility and the wheels for PR duties.Originally Posted by jesterno2

i know Nady is a FA but he could probably be brought back as another versatile bench piece through arbitration. seeing as he missed pretty much this whole year he would probably be fairly cheap. not sure where to find the numbers on what that would probably calculate to though.Originally Posted by False1
Looks like a decent utility player, but I'll reserve judgement until I've watched him for a few weeks. Funny how so many jumped all over Cashman for what seemed like a meaningless acquisition, but it could turn out to be another great move, especially if the team can carry an extra pitcher in the playoffs because Hairston can back up any position. Any offense he can provide is gravy.
Let the kids play.
Can he pitch?

Bouncing around to a few teams seems to have brought him back down to earth. I hope it works out.

Bingo! I love this guy and everything about his play- the hustle, the fundamentals- he is a very welcome addition that should be kept around. He reminds me of the Sojo/Luis Vizcaino days and absolutely should be kept on the team for the forseeable future.

Yeah, it would have been nice if Hairston actually replaced Ransom.Originally Posted by knickfan23

I didn't know he was that good of a defender in the outfield (+18.3 UZR/150 in CF). That's going to help late in games defense wise if Joe wants to have Hariston, Gardner (when he comes back), and Melky. That'd probably be the best defensive outfield we've had in a really long time.

I agree. Good utility guy to have. If he's playing everyday he gets exposed and your team is in trouble but if he's a bench guy he's outstanding and there isn't usually a huge drop off from your starter. He's got occasinal pop and can steal a base too.Originally Posted by TheHugeUnit2

Forgive me, but I've been thinking of good HR calls Sterling could use on Jerry Hairston, Jr....what about "so and so....coughs up a hairball"?
I know, it's terrible, but my friends are getting a kick out of it, lol

What is Sterling's call going to be when/if Hairston hits a home run?

Is this serious? I hope there is some serious sarcasm here. I would love to have a team full of players that "can only hit homeruns." That would mean that the team homered in every single plate appearance.Originally Posted by ajra21

Watching this guy play the field makes you understand why Ransom never had a major league job before this year.
The difference between the bat is relatively negligible, but Hairston is a plus defender at 5 or 6 different positions on the field.
And that's the difference between career minor leaguer and career major leaguer.
Hairston has an ops+ of 83 this year. Ransom had one of 53. While Hairston is, by no means a good hitter, the difference certainly isn't negligible. He also has good speed.Originally Posted by Don Wrigley
Harriston Jr. has a career 85 OPS+, Ransom 88. Niether is a good hitter but Hairston is much more valuable due him being a much better fielder at 3B*, SS* & 2B than Cody and he has the ability to play average or better defense at all 3 OF positions. And as you mentioned he has pretty good speed.Originally Posted by pleasepassthesoup
If Harriston Jr. is starting regularly (due to injury or something) this thread will get ugly fast becasue he will be exposed. But as a bench guy he's pretty much ideal.
*by much better I mean only in relation to Ransom, he is not a good SS or 3B by any stretch of the imagination, just not nearly as bad as Ransom.

Hairston looked very good in RF last night. It's nice to see a corner OF take good routes to a ball, for a change.
Plus hes a type B FA. No brainer to offer him arby.
UZR says he's average at SS and 3B, and significantly above average at 2B and the OF positions.Originally Posted by Yankee Tripper

I noticed this too. He also looked good in LF a few days ago, once again because of the route he took to cut off the ball and hold the hitter to a single. Very refreshing.Originally Posted by roblyo33
