That is horrible. They couldn't trade some reliever.

Waste of a pretty good trading chip. One of our quality youg C prospects for a bench player.....hmmm...Ramiro Pena could do the same thing as Hairston.

I think it bodes well for Murphy and Sanchez. I wonder if Kyle Hig**** gets bumped to Charleston now?
"No, I would not like to reconsider being a Yankee fan, and no, marrying a New Englander should have no bearing on it."

A non-prospect in my mind. He's been terrible for us!

He is young. I know he was only hitting .260 and the RBIs and Ks were awful, but we needed to give him a chance. Is that why Farnham was brought there maybe?

Hairston can hit. Pena also still needs time to develop. Hairston can already play OF, while Pena is still learning.
Hairston, is also very close to a Type B free agent.

Stronger words than I would use, but agreeable. The Yankees have SO many young catchers better than him, that it would be pointless to keep him. The only reason to keep him would be as a trade chip, which they used him for anyway.

    I agree completely.

I have made a similar argument before several times on this site- the reason for the Yanks to continue to collect young C like candy is to trade them for what you need. If there is one position that natural position scarcity creates artificial value in, it is at C.

In other words, grab as many quality C prospects as you can each year- yes, some, like Weems, will not turn out as hoped, but if they show anything at all, they will carry trade value beyond their actual production.

No big deal. Its doubtful Weems amounts to enough for us to regret this.

Weems was finally healthy and starting to hit. I think it's an overpay, but hopefully Hairston will be a type B and at least it means Ransom is gone.

    Re: Chase Weems Traded

Trading a A- catcher who is probably #5 for a super utility player is a no brainer. Hairston at 2 mil is gold in that he plays a respectable everywhere but P/C with speed, batted 320 for Cincy last year. Great upgrade.

This should happen, but Girardi is talking about using both him and Hairston, which makes no sense. I guess a below replacement level bat, awful defense, and average speed is now desireable...

I guess he really likes versatility, which isn't such a bad thing.
Also, he probably meant that until Gardner comes back, then Ransom can leave.

I don't think sucking at multiple positions makes him versatile. With a guy on the roster that can play the OF as well as the IF, I'd really like to see Pena back and let him learn the OF in the offseason. I know his bat isn't any better, but at least he's a top notch defender and looks like he has more speed than Ransom.

    Re: Chase Weems Traded

What makes you so sure that he will be a better defender in the OF than Hairston is, a position he has never played?

Is this directed to me? If so, I haven't said I think anyone will be a better OFer than Hairston, and the reason I want Pena up again is because we now have Hairston, who can play the IF and OF. I would still like Pena to learn the OF, but I haven't said he is or ever will be a better OFer than Hairston.

Sorry. When you said "sucking at multiple positions", I thought you meant Hairston. I guess you were referring to Ransom...

He has to talk like that until Hairston shows up. You can tell a guy you're cutting him tomorrow.
