Here is an interesting idea, that may or may not work out.

The Yankees need another starting pitcher, both for the season and for the playoffs. They dont want to trade the farm for Halladay, and there isnt a lot out there on the trade market. Wang is looking questionable at best. I know it may sound crazy, and the chances of it happening are a long shot to say the least, but how awesome would it be if Mike Mussina, came back just for one more season(partial), and added a world series ring to his hall of fame case?

Now obviously, there is always the chance he may not be effective, but he was very good last year, and he would be pitching for less than half a season by the time he is ready. He doesnt have to be an ace or even a number 2, just a number 3 type who can keep us in the game for 6 innings.

Of course all this is moot, if he doesnt want to come back, and chances are he doesnt.

It would be low risk high reward, and is worth trying.

Let's see how badly he gets roughed up when he pitches in the Old Timers' Day game before we decide we can use him.

The Yankees are a baseball team.
    Javy Vazquez's 2010 non-Cy Young season: 4-10, 7.15 ERA, 140 Ks, 170 IP.

This is really silly. Moose hasn't pitched in almost a year; it would take him at least six weeks to get into any kind of game shape, at which point it's September. And the chances of him being better than, say, Igawa, are not good. Moose quit after last season because he got his 20 wins and was smart enough to quit while ahead. He been a mediocre pitcher for a long time before last year. There are tons of better options out there.

Maybe he'll announce it today when he attends old timers day... Clemens-style

I agree completely, until you get to your last sentence. There really aren't tons of better options. There are other options, a few anyway - but not a ton of them...

I've been thinking about this for a while, but I think it's too late at this point in the season. The ship has sailed. I defintely think that, provided he was given adequate time to get into game shape, he would slot right in as our 3rd starter and be a significant upgrade.

This is an intriguing idea that deserves a bit more credit than it seems to have gotten in the first few responses.

The only way it would work, though, is if Mussina surprised everyone by announcing he's been staying in game shape and could be ready to go in 3-4 weeks. Or better yet if he and Cashman announced that they made this deal 4-6 weeks ago and he's ready to go now.

Obviously, it's extremely unlikely that that's the case. But Suzyn Waldman's reaction alone would make it an amazing move.

It's a interesting idea, I kinda like it. But it would take Moose to long to get ready.

Moose isn't the type of guy that would do it. He doesn't have a Roger Clemens type ego.

If he wanted to come back, the Yanks would have given him at least a one year deal during the off-season. He's retired, for real.

Pitching in the playoffs after starting the old-timer's game ... that would be a first ...

... and it would be a great trivia question 30 years from now too.

Yea, like Sergio Mitre? here is no starter in our minors with any long term upside that would be blocked by Moose for this one season.

In the playoffs with the travel schedule, we only need starters. I'd stack our top four up with anyone
