Thread: The 2009 Tony Pena Performance Thread.

The 2009 Tony Pena Performance Thread.

Did anyone see him in the dugout pumping up A-Rod before his AB?

    What a manager.

Another performance thread? What's next? The 2009 batboy performance thread?

Re: The 2009 Tony Pena Performance Thread.

Now all we need is for Girardi to start getting ejected in the first inning. Our offense would put up ridiculous numbers.

    Pena for Manager!

If Girardi hadn't been kicked out, the Yankees would've scored -2 runs that inning and trailed by three.

I actually thought they should've picked Pena at the time but that was just me.

Alright, in all seriousness: What has Tony Pena ever done to suggest he'd be competent as a major league manager?

He had a .410 winning percentage and hasn't even sniffed another job since being fired in 2005.

But yeah, he's sure to be great for us!

With a bit more insurance I hope he doesn't take Joba out for a pinch hitter.

Girardi would have PH for Joba with Ransom.

Good move faking the PH to keep the Braves from pitching around Cervelli.

No thanks on Tony - the guy couldn't take KC. I guess with Yankee fans, it's any port in a storm.

Didn't they have their only winning record in a couple decades with Pena? Those teams weren't good. This team is a winner.

His first full year, he was 49-77 in 2002. Not that I really give a hoot, as I was just trying to point out to RB that he didn't have much to work with.

This thread is all in jest anyways, for now.

I wasn't referring to his first year - I don't remember the details, but I believe his relationship with the Royals ended quite badly.

Royals' loss is the Yankees' gain.

Girardi's relationship with Florida didn't end so well either last time I checked.

    Go Pena!

Is that the defense you want to use considering Girardi's departure from Florida?

In all seriousness, I'm convinced almost any experienced manager would be a better fit than Girardi. Naturally I'm going to boost up the guy next in line. Tony Pena has a lot more seasoning as a manager in the ML and in the Dominican league.

Maybe the managing thing will work out for Girardi somewhere else. 1.5 years into his Yankee tenure - he looks completely over his head.

They think he'll be great because he's not Joe Girardi - the same way they thought Girardi would be great because he wasn't Joe Torre. I happen to like Pena, but to think that this team stinks because of Girardi is ridiculous. I have been disappointed in Joe G's management of the team, but the pattern of listless offense; poor fielding (except for that 18 game errorless streak), and underwhelming pitching performances, goes back to the last two or three years of Torre's tenure. It's really been a pattern for the last five years - and it's unconscienable. I, unlike a lot of Yankee fans, understand that the team may not win The World Series every year (even though I want them to win every game no less every World Series), but I cannot understand a team that doesn't (or doesn't look like it) compete - and that is just how this teams looks for long stretches at a time every season now.

Didn't Pena have a blow up in KC? I mean - it was serious. I'd have to look it up because I don't remember it at all.....In any case, I can't tell if most of these comments are sarcastic or not. If they aren't, and they're serious, well......I completely disagree. Good point about Joe, though.......

    Wow.

So following some of the logic in this thread:

    1) The Yankees were emotionally discharged for the first few innings.
    2) Girardi got ejected.
    3) Emotions were uplifted as a result! Not by the manager going and showing some fire and getting tossed. Not by Garnder's teammates getting pissed for the bad call. But because Pena "looked like he belonged" in the dugout and made it "looser."

Recommendation = Fire Girardi and replace him with Pena.

I get that people are frustrated with Girardi. I am too. But is this not stretching a bit to far to try to attach biased causation to the mini-offensive outburst?

And Coke came a couple feet from giving up a game tying home run to a lefty. If the ball travels a few more feet, and Pena leaves Coke in to face the righty, is he still a genius? Guys - he's the bench coach caddying for the manager for a few innings. Joe was still calling the shots, don't you think?

Speaking for myself, saying he belonged was a comment on him as a manager, not for the results of the game. It was also the anti-Girardi effect! Probably could have been anyone tonight and looked better than Girardi.

Of course it is. But sometimes it just seems right. Sometimes you just know right away whether someone is a "fit" or not. Pena seems to fit.

And this can all be summed up after 5 innings. Great. The overreaction on this board is laughable at times. What if the yanks lost tonight? Would he then be the automatic fit to take the yanks to the promised land?

Re: The 2009 Tony Pena Performance Thread.

One thing that was different in Girardi being tossed is that this wasn't one of those manufactured outbursts to stir things up. It was a legitimate very bad call. So the players and Girardi should have been together on getting fired up after that. Now, if they go right back to sleep tomorrow, then Girardi has a steep climb ahead of him in getting this team to play.

I'm not saying this because I think it's a quantifiable fact observed and proven over time. It's just an immediate gut feeling. Of course it's biased. Of course it's a tiny sample size. Of course it's just as likely it felt good to watch it because they did well. It's not science. It's just what it felt to me as I watched.

Of course he would. If they lost it would've been Girardi's fault. Didn't you see that the players all rejoiced that he was gone? Didn't you notice that Pena looked more like a leader* in those few innings in the dugout? The players responded to him so positively before he even did anything and that's why Cervelli homered? I mean, come on. They didn't score a single run while Girardi was in the dugout. They obviously hate him.

I think A-Rod's 2 RBI, line drive single had more to do with the victory than Girardi being tossed or Pena managing. As much as we all hate to admit it, "as goes A-Rod, so go the Yankees" (or something like that).

In defense of Pena, the rumor was that there was a pretty scandalous personal issue that came up and he left the Royals to avoid some major embarrassment.
