Thread: Your new shortstop: Hanley Ramirez?

    Your new shortstop: Hanley Ramirez?

This is for a couple years down the road because Jeter is signed through 2010, but by that point Hanley Ramirez will be in the big money portion of his 6 year deal. The Marlins would probably love to have that taken off their hands if they can get a couple grade A prospects to go with it. How about Hanley Ramirez as the new Yankees shortstop?

    I'd rather have JJ Hardy....

j/k Hanly would be a good heir apparnt to Jeter, but i'd rather develop a young shortstop then go sign one or trade for one

Hanley will end up in the outfield shortly after Jeter does.

Hanley's future is at third base. We already have a third baseman locked up until he's 42. :-\

They're going to want another team to take Ramirez off their hands even though they are building a new stadium for 2011/2012?

We should trade for him and groom him to be Posada's eventual replacement.

When the Fish put him on the block, it's going to be quite the battle between the Yanks and Sox.
"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston."

IIRC, wasn't there an article over the offseason about how he may not want to return to Boston?

I would like Hanly, but shouldn't we be trying to groom our older players successors in our own farm system, just a thought.

guys whatever happened to Pena as Jeter replacement??????

anyway 2 key areas we should be looking for replacements is Mo's replacement and Posada's replacement, though I think we have him in Cervelli
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

It depends. I would much rather have Pena (One of our guys at Shortstop more then give out some of grade A prospects. Grade A prospects don't really grow on trees. If Pena doesn't cut it then we look into it. Pena has got speed and his defense isn't so bad.

Hanley is now 25 going on 26 in December. Now, that's not old in the least but take in account that Jeter could be short stop for the next 2-3 years. Then he'd be about 27 maybe 28. Now, add to the fact that Hanley may wany a six year deal. That means we have him till he's 33 maybe 34 years old. As for the time being I say we go with Pena.

I dont know, he did say that he would rather have fricking Pena playing as everyday short stop than Hanley Ramirez, and that was the second line. I dont think it can get more painful than that.

True, but for effect, I had to put it that way. That was the most blatant of transgressions, but you have to look deeper at the other lines to appreciate them, very subtle.

That is just, beautiful. Especially since Hanley Ramirez type players grow on trees, and top prospects only come and go every year, in bunches.

I would love to see him play in NY. Not a lot of SSs with 30+ HR power, and he has good speed on the bases. Whether he gets moved or not is a non-issue, I think we should go after him regardless.

I have an idea. How about drafting a decent SS and actually bring him up through the system. When was the last time this organization produced an All Star caliber position player.

    Robinson Cano.

Our system isn't exactly stacked with potential good middle infielders right now. Perhaps if we sign Sano, but he's not expected to stick at SS to begin with. Top of the line prospects at SS are REALLY hard to come by for us considering they're often some of the most in-demand prospects in the draft (and thus go higher than #25-30). So to rely on our system to develop a decent SS isn't going to work, unless we can A.) Sign Sano and B.) He sticks at SS (with B being even more unlikely than A), or by some miracle draft a great SS out of college next year, there won't be anyone in our system ready to take over for Jeter when he has to move (not that Sano would be ready by 2012 or whenever either).

(That said, Hanley Ramirez is not the next Yankee SS. He isn't sticking there once he's out of Florida.)

Or we could sign the all star short stop, and then draft and develop another need. Using the free market when you have the Yankees resources is a good thing.

No he hasn't. He has improved, but he should just now be considered "pretty good".

    2007
    26 errors, second-worst among shortstops
-19.2 Ultimate Zone rating, worst among shortstops
-37 Fielding Bible plus-minus, worst among shortstops

    2008
    22 errors, worst among shortstops
    -0.7 UZR, 12th among shortstops
    +3 Fielding Bible plus-minus, 15th among shortstops

2009 (as of about a week ago)
5 errors, tied for 11th among shortstops
    1.3 UZR, 12th among shortstops
    +3 Fielding Bible plus-minus, 12th among shortstops

If his 2009 progresses on the same plane, he will be a slightly above average (or pretty good SS)

That said, I agree with the point that I think you are trying to make. If he does solidify, his bat makes him a huge win at SS, (like ARod in the day) as you can get great production offensively, from a defensive position.

I dont think he is awful. I just think his body is going to grow and he'll get worse with it. Kinda like how Miggy Cabrera just gradually became too big to move around at 3rd.

Would be awesome if he didnt though because it would be great to see him wear our uni.

I don't think he is a mess. Not, in a long shot. I am worried about how much someone like that would cost. I think that Hanley might be one of the best short stops in the National League. I just don't want them to get fleeced in the process of getting him.

Cabrera just kinda got fat. He's always been terrible.

Hanley's frame is pretty different. Very wirey. Not to mention he's 25/26, don't think he body will be doing much more growing.

How about "definitely the best shortstop in both leagues" and the closest thing to A-Rod since A-Rod was at the position.

He's basically Jeter with 10 HRs, 10 2Bs, 10 SB more every year. How sick is that?

Really? I had a feeling Hanley was the best in the National League I guess I had never realised how good of a shortstop he really was.

Ummm, you do realize that you aren't a fan of the Pirates or the Brewers, don't you? You need to realize that (1) Hanley is going to break the bank, (2) the Red Sox have a bigger need at SS than we do, and (3) if we don't get Hanley the Red Sox have about a 60% chance of landing him.

    Imagine this lineup:

    LF Crawford
    CF Jackson
    1B Tex
    3B Hanley
    C Montero
    2B Cano
    DH Arod
    SS Nunez
    RF Romine

Awesome! Ahh the joys of fantasy baseball.

I really don't want Hanley to go to the Red Sox believe me. But, here's a question for you because I'm sure the Red SOx aren't the only team in need of a short stop. Do you think Hanley would go back so willingly to the Red Sox after being shipped from the Red Sox in the first place for Beckett? I know Hanley is an all star short and the best shortstop in the league. And I know that he's gonna break the bank. But, with other teams in need of a shortstop I really don't think there's a 60 percent chance of him going back to the team that sold him in the first place.

I guess, I just want to see where he is and what's happened to him in 2-3 years time. There have been times where somebody could be a great shortstop and then in about 2 or 3 years time their stuff could get so bad that they are being moved to a different position. So, unless his stuff takes a huge downfall by 2011-2012 I say we go for it.
