I think he's a little dry sometimes, but he's still better than Leiter and O'Neill.

nothing wrong with Flash, hes ok
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes
Cone is by far the best on YES IMO.
Does his homework, has personality, a sense of humor, etc.

Flash is tolerable, I like his insight from a catchers POV. Cone has been a nice addition, the guy definitely does his homework. [I wish Sterling would do the same research]. In all seriousness, Flash is better than Leiter..but I wish Kaat was still around, I absolutely loved his commentary and his stories.
Even though I'm also really annoyed with Flaherty, one has to admit... we wouldn't give a chocolate chip if the Yankees hadn't just been slapped around by the Red Sox. This is kind of like kicking the dog...

Not true. I've been saying for a while now that Flaherty is awful in the booth. He brings nothing to the table. He talks about things like "body language" and "chemistry" rather than anything of substance. I would expect more from a former catcher.Originally Posted by delv

I like Flaherty. At least he doesn't mess up people's names 8 times a game like another Yankee voice.
If you want to feel better about Flaherty, listen to Sutcliffe call a game on ESPN. That guy is HORRIBLE. Or, the Hawk is always a good way to make you feel better about your team's game callers.

I agree. I have no idea what Sutcliffe brings to the table. Between Joe Morgan and Rick Sutcliffe, there must be a lot of pictures of Mickey Mouse in compromising situations.Originally Posted by False1

Flaherty is a bit dull. I find it odd that went Yankee fans complain about broadcasters nobody mentions Rick Cerrone. He sucked

Funny thing is I was just thinking that at the beginning of today's game and then saw this thread. Yeah, he's not good. He's not the worst in the world (like Sutcliffe as someone mentioned), but he's not good. I like Cone, Singleton, and Leiter MUCH better than him.
My favorite is Singleton doing the PBP and Cone doing the color.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.”
Flaherty has the worst home run call in the history of baseball announcers.
And that includes little kids who can barely speak who are goofing around.
If I had 3 wishes... One of my wishes would be to make a select few of you Pirates Fans.

I actually thought Flash is showing a bit of a sense of humor tonight. His commentary actually isn't bad - it's his boring voice, syntax, and delivery that are the killers. I love Ken Singleton, who has gotten more of a chance to do play by play this season and, IMO, is pretty good at it.
What happened to Coney? I haven't heard him in awhile.
I still think Singleton is the best play-by-play guy they have. I wonder how he'd be on radio...Originally Posted by The Q Bomb

Bingo. He says everything with the same monotone voice ending with the same rise in emphasis at the end of the sentence.Originally Posted by The Q Bomb
I really, really want to like his game calling - because he's the only YES guy I don't enjoy - but I just can't. I've tried, but it's not happening. And having him try PBP isn't helping the cause either.

I like Flaherty, but he's defintely the worst of a generally pretty good bunch of broadcasters. He's mildly amusing in a dorky sort of way, but that's about it. I got the feeling from this trip that Singleton doesn't like him.![]()
Singleton and Cone are both outstanding. I can understand why people don't like Kay, but he's never really bothered me.
"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston."
I think people are more annoyed with Kay's ego/personality than his broadcasting.
Flaherty is just awful in all respects and he does it with a slight but noticeable lisp.

Flaherty will probably get better. Don't forget, he hasn't been doing this for years and years like Kay and Singleton have. I remember how poor Bobby Murcer was when he first started, then he got much better.
Bern Baby Bern

Flaherty knows the game and I hope he can improve, but it's not happening right now. Very boring and stale.
Not that I'm complaining, but it seems that Kay has done less games so far this season and doesn't do West Coast games anymore.
Cone and O'Neill need to do more games.
When I watch the games with my friends, I always make comments about the game and then right after that, Flaherty says the same exact thing. My friends are amazed. I then explain to my friends that I am stating the obvious and that Flaherty obviously sucks as an analyst.
Yeah, Murcer was really lousy when he started. Pure, unadulterated hick, and not in the folksy, charming way he later developed.Originally Posted by Bern Baby Be
FWIW, I don't think Flaherty is the worst. I'd take him over O'Neill any day. O'Neill really brings down the broadcasts.

I absolutely despise this man. I wish he at least wasn't relegated to give the play by play.
Calmer than you are.
O'Neill and Cone are hilarious.

I thought it was funny last night when he basically said he didn't care if the home plate umpire from the previous night's elbow was broken.
Flahrety is good for a 3 man booth as one of the 2 analysts. Alone, though, he is very dull and makes the broadcast that much more boring. And don't get me started on his play-by-play.
I like it when he's in the booth with Kay and Singleton or Kay and Leiter.
Flaherty is terrible. I agree with whoever said that it's not exactly his commentary that's bad, but his voice itself and how he says things. He's BORING, plain and simple.
O'Neill is also terrible.
The best is David Cone (LOVE him!!!) and Singleton. I used to like Kay but he's been unbearable this year.

Very good point.Originally Posted by themgmt
Kay actually adds value to the broadcast because he brings a fan's perspective to a cast that is otherwise, all former players. Kay will ask about things like comraderie, personal rivalries, things that fans may wonder about and that players might view quite differently. Kay's biggest pitfall, besides his outsized ego, is the way he will repeat the same thing over and over again, when it's some scoop (or supposed scoop) that he uncovered (even if he uncovered it 10 years ago, like the "Pudge Rodriguez doesn't even attend pitchers' meetings!", rant). I guess that is also a function of his "outsized ego".
I've said this before, but the times when I find myself disliking Kay, I also find myself enjoying disliking Kay. His personality is so huge and bombastic that it's never not entertaining.
Flaherty, on the other hand, is a complete bore. Not only is his personality boring, but he never listens to his booth partner and responds in kind, and for a former player it seems like there's a dearth of game knowledge at play.
Kenny is great and did his best on this west coast swing, but thank God it's over.

in regards to Flaherty, I agree that he's just boring.

I find Kay amusing - sometimes I can't believe he takes himself seriously! And I like the way Leiter and O'Neill get on him. Cone is definitely the best, tho, for entertainment value. I think Flaherty needs public speaking lessons to alter the phrasing of his sentences occasionally. Reading this thread has made me miss Bobby Murcer...
The worst pairing is when Cone and O'Neill are together, regardless of who is doing play-by-play. I can't take nine innings of hearing "coney" and "paulie."
I remember they did a series together last season at Kansas City and it was unbearable.

love how he keeps asking when that movie is coming out.Originally Posted by DaSh 1s
