Flaherty makes me want to shoot myself

I want to shoot myself everytime I hear John Flaherty in the booth, he says the same things each time and is quickly becoming one of my least favorite announcers ever. Anyone agree?

I would love for the broadcast team to be Singleton and Cone and every once in a while + Paulie, that would be great.

Ditto, despise Flaherty. So boring. He's the 2nd worst (Kay of course being the top dog).

All you ever hear from Flaherty is how much he sucked at the plate and how important the backup catcher is. I want to kill him. Singleton, Leiter, O'Neill, Cone for the win. And bring back Jim Kaat damn it.

Buyout Bob Costas from MLBN. Flash is too monotone, not enough personality. Kay is annoying but at least he's personable.

Flaherty may be a bit vanilla, but I'll gladly take that over what the Yankees offer in the way of radio broadcasts.

    Agreed.

    Singleton > Cone > Kay > Oneill > Flaherty > Leiter > Radio

I'll go with this...Leiter can get too preachy but can be interesting also. He is actually better on MLB for some reason.

Last week or so they had Kay, Flaherty and Leiter together...that was the ultimate negative, boring, terrible broadcast!

Re: Flaherty makes me want to shoot myself

I've been waiting for someone to post a thread on this topic, as I don't have new thread posting privileges yet.

Flaherty makes me want to put a gun to my head. The guy is obviously knowledgeable, but he JUST WON"T SHUT UP!!! He talks incessantly about anything and everything. A color analyst needs to know when to speak and when to keep silent.

It seems like everytime the play-by-play guy (whether it be Kay or Singleton) says something, Flaherty seems to feel he is obligated to say something else. I find myself sitting in front of the TV, screaming STFU!!!! already! Someone needs to take Flash aside and tell him to shut up once in a while.

Flaherty is my least favorite YES broadcaster also. I still can't believe that the YES Network couldn't find some additional $$$ to bring back Jim Kaat. Singleton/Kaat was the best broadcasting team, unless you'd like to add Bobby Murcer to that duo. Man, I miss Bobby.

^ Bobby was FUN and interesting. We need more like him. Kenny is a very good PBP guy and Coney and Paul are good color men. Kay I can take or leave. Just my opinion.

That would be AWESOME! (Unless of course they paired him with Flaherty, which of course would just mis-use Reggie's talkin talent!)

First inning and we've already had one "nice piece of hitting" from Kay, and one "not trying to do too much with it" from Flaherty.

Singleton, Leiter, Paulie/Cone is the best/funniest.

Kay is just a lame ass and Flaherty constantly calls the wrong pitch types.

I actually enjoy Suzyn on the radio for some reason. There are numerous threads devoted to Sterling so I won't comment on him, but I feel bad for Suzyn that she always gets lumped in with him. You can't tell me you'd pick Flaherty over her?

I love how Kay goes crazy over the other teams players. He was way over the top about a throw where the 3rd baseman charged the ball and made a nice throw as he avoided the bag. He went with his usual over the top praise on how it was such an athletic play, it was soooo special, can you believe that, etc. It was a good play but nothing special. My little league 3rd baseman makes that play most of the time too.

Kaat was just sick of the BS. He didn't want to do it anymore.

Flaherty is smart, but as others have said, monotone.

Kay isn't as bad as some people make him out to be. The problem is he does 100 games a year, so you get sick of him. I listen to a lot of other broadcasts, and he is one of the better ones.

Singleton is the best. He can do color and play by play and always has good stories.

    Umm, not so much:
    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ba...ets_yes_r.html

Although he is back in the mix, Kaat won’t be returning to YES’ Yankees booth. MLB sources said Kaat reached out to YES suits, offering his services on a limited basis at a reasonable price.
Sources said Kaat, who was not looking for major dough or a monster schedule, was told YES had no room for him because of budgetary constraints and scheduling.
Think about this: YES and the Yankees, who are rolling in dough, cannot afford to pay Kaat. Man, the economy must be worse than anyone really thought. Think about this: YES, already with a cast of thousands, cannot squeeze Kaat in the booth on a limited basis.
Nah, why would YES want to bring back Kaat, not only a marquee analyst YES suits raved about, but a fan favorite too. That just didn’t make sense.

I don't hate Flaherty. I just think he's unqualified for the job he has. I was hoping that with time, he'd improve some, but that hasn't been the case. Just like my mouthwash, he ain't making it.

I acutally like Flaherty becuase he talks about situations in the games as ex-player. Micheal Kay is just trying to become a super star announcer who I hate.

I think he's a little better when he works with Singleton instead of Kay... but then again, all their announcers are better when they work with Singy.

As you can tell, I'm not crazy about Flaherty but you never know. He could get better - they must have seen something in him. I remember when Bobby Murcer first started broadcasting, he wasn't well received. He was a little too serious and negative at times but he turned out ok.

Re: Flaherty makes me want to shoot myself

I don't think you should complain... at least, Flaherty is a yankee fan. On EI, I have to watch the opposing team broadcast half the time... drives me nuts. Today, for example, I had to listen to Dennis Eckersley explain how he thinks the Red Sox should retaliate against the yankees... surprise, surprise that Eck would bring up the red sox in a Yankees-Indians game. Thanks.

Seriously, get over it... or L2Mute. He's a commentator... he's supposed to talk. It's not like its your wife and you can say, I wish she would just shut up so I can watch the game...

Our commentators are def 10x better than any other team.

Yeah, Eck is pretty rough. All that talk about "sloppy" pitches made my ears bleed.

I can deal with Flash on a limited basis, he does get a bit annoying though. He says "Making a bid" on plays way too much.

I thought Kaat left the booth to travel the country with his wife? She has since passed away god bless her soul and i guess Kitty has nothing else to do sitting at home alone. I really cant believe YES denied him, shame on them.

That's it in a nutshell. Flaherty has the most boring voice and syntax. He also takes ever so subtle shots at players, especially Posada, and it annoys me. I don't know if it's the shot that annoys me or the fact that he tries to disguise. Whatever the case, I can't stand listening to him either.

Singleton and Cone and Singleton and Leiter make a good pair. Kay is annoying, and too much of a fishwife, gossip, or whatever word you would like to use to characterize someone who tries to sensationalize emotional and off the field issues, however, he does ask questions and bring up things from a fan's perspective, which is very valuable when all the other announcers are former players.

I love the freshness and slight sarcasm O'Neill brings to the booth.

Singleton is the one that bothers me. I call him Captain Obvious. Kay will do the play by play and Singleton just repeats him. "That's right Michael, he hit a far homerun. Did I mention I played for the O's?"

Yeah I heard him doing pbp during the Texas series, thought it was unusual.

Even if some aren't the greatest announcers I prefer former players, they have stories and actual playing experience to draw on

The Yankees saying that they had "no room" for Kitty (IMAGINE!), speaks VOLUMES and offers little hope that the "suits" will ever pay attention to whom the FANS would like to see.

Flaherty started out promising, then seems to have fallen in love with his own voice and opinion.

But I absolutely can't stand Flaherty. I couldn't stand him as a player (though I once saw him hit a grand slam against the Rockies...weird) and can't stand him now. I'm not a huge fan of Kay, but he's at least a little entertaining.
