Thank goodness they no longer have the little bat on top of the flagpole. You might not know this, but Don Mattingly once told Michael Kay...

Hal, Randy, Lonn and Hank haven't asked, but here's my $.02.....

Would move Flash to the radio side to provide solid analysis and to temper Sterling's over-the-top schtick. He also has the selfless temperament to handle Sterling's ego.

Then would have Suzyn do pre and post-game on the radio, which is her strength. Having less of her voice on the airwaves also would save the ears of canines all across the Yankee Radio Network.

Would ditch or severely limit O'Neill. He is never prepared, knows nothing about Yankee history prior to 1990 and brings little to the table, except that he never liked it when umpires had an inconsistent strike zone because instead of being ahead in the count 2-1, the batter is now behind 1-2, blah, blah...... Having him away from the booth also has the dual benefit of preventing Kay from ROFLMAO at everything he says.

Would use Cone on TV a lot. He is wonderful.

Think you still need Kay's non-jock perspective in the booth.

Singleton is class. Would definitely keep him.

Sterling is fun -- except for the 50 percent of the time that he blows the home run calls. With a better partner like Flaherty, he would be a lot more bearable, too.

Or the one about how batters got hits off Whitey on the first three pitches of the game, then Casey comes to the mound to ask Yogi how Whitey is throwing and Yogi says, "I don't know, I haven't caught a ball yet."

Singleton was polite enough to chuckle even after hearing the story for the third time.

Of course, Paulie never heard the story .....

I agree with most of that but I would like to see Leiter in the booth more often as well. Maybe have Kay do most of the PBP and Singleton, Cone and Leiter rotate with 2 of the 3 in the booth every night and sometimes all 3 in nights where Kay doesn't work.

The O'Neill analysis is right. I wish people would forget that he played for the Yankees and was a big contributor and actually listen to what he says, which normally has nothing to do with baseball. We can only hear about his wife and kids and the fact that he played a good round of golf and is hungry so much before we realize that his baseball knowledge is not up to par to what a professional analyst's should be.

He doesn't provide solid analysis in the least bit. Just fire him and be done with it.

I like John but think he is more suitable in the studio discussing the game after it's over. He, unfortunately, has a deadpan expression which probably doesn't make him popular with many viewers.

He's the most vanilla man in America. I once saw someone wearing a Flaherty jersey at a Yankee game and can't imagine it being anyone besides a family member.

Leiter has a good analytical mind and interesting perspective on pitchers.
He is doing so much with the MLB Network this season, I didn't even think he was considered a regular member of the YES team anymore. But more Leiter would be ok with me, too.

Girardi might give him a run. Can you imagine being out to dinner with the two of them?

For those of you who are familiar with WEEI in Boston, John Flaherty reminds me of Dale Arnold. He is NY"s Mr. Deedely Doodely.

No way. Not even close. Dale Arnold knows about as much about sports (other than hockey) as an old lady at a nursing home. He's the biggest ass kisser of Boston sports there is in Boston IMO.

Flaherty is a bit dull but at least he tells it like it is and isn't a complete homer. And he has some knowledge of baseball.

I noticed the first time Flash said "proud of his fastball" on a telecast with Kay, Kay picked it right up and has used it a few times himself.

I agree that Flaherty is a bore but he's still better than Susan Waldman.

Frankly I could listen to Kim Jones all the day. She smart and seems to have a sense of humor. I also like Cone and Leiter. Maybe they could bring back Kaat, now that he's out of retirement.

Re: Flaherty makes me want to shoot myself

It's actually at the point where I mute the game if it's just Singleton and Flaherty. I usually prefer Singleton to Kay, but when it's just Singleton and Flaherty, the broadcast seems too calm and lackadaisical. I agree with all of the critiques of Flaherty above, especially his monotone, his phrasing, and his use of the same phrases time and time again (Kay is extremely guilty of this as well, obviously). I wonder if YES will bring back Flaherty next year - they surely can't think he's good? Then again, as long as he isn't actively hurting the ratings (and I'm sure he's not), they probably don't care.

I still think the best booth is just Cone/Singleton. Cone is energetic and lively and Singleton is more laid-back; they compliment each other well. Both are insightful. The only drawback is Cone says "Singy" like every other sentence.

Does anyone find that Kay has actually gotten worse this year as far as repeating the same stories? I don't need to hear the Teixeira/Baltimore story ever again. I also agree with the person who said it's fun to hate Kay. Flaherty is just straight-up boring.

Very good analysis. I agree that Kay has gotten worse as far as repeatinng the same stories. His new one is laying out in painstaking detail (as if talking to idiots) how not signing Mark Teixeira will haunt The Red Sox for the rest of this century. He details (what he thinks is) his novel take on why this is so. He "came up with this idea" several days ago and has repeated it ad infinitum ever since. He is such an egotist. (And meanwhile, he talks about the egos of ballplayers.)

Re: Flaherty makes me want to shoot myself

Flaherity (spelling) in my opinion is just bad because he is monotone and just sounds like chalk on a blackboard.

kay tries to act like he knows what hes talking about but doesnt

Oniel seems lazy and really only wants to eat not so much actually call the game. yet i enjoy him

Singleton has great stories and can also do good play by play

Cone just likes to have fun and when he and oneil team up it is a great game.

Lieter I am still undecided about. He has some flashes of flaherty but at sometimes is good.

IMO Singleton, Cone, Oniel = Perfect game

Re: Flaherty makes me want to shoot myself

My opinion on the announcers...lets grade them while were at it.

Kay: B-...he has a good personality but he can get annoying quick. He likes to talk about fordham alot...it gets annoying. He also seems to try and show up the other announcers from time to time

Singleton: B...sometimes he seems a bit dry, but he has good knowledge of the game.

Paul O: B+...imo, he seems to have the best personality of the bunch, but we horrible at play by play. Great at color.

John Flar: D+...sometimes he seems like he is trying too hard, uses too many cliches, pretends to be a know it all about pitchers and catchers, and is really monotone, with little to no personality

Cone: B+...I think he has a good balance of personality and knowledge of the game. He could be a really good announcer, but he barely ever is actually there

Leiter: B...I'm not really sure what to say about him. He's really good to have along with Cone for Subway Series games.

    ...

Kaat: they should get him back, along with Bob Costas and Reggie Jackson.

    Radio
John and Susan: I think they make a good team, I have to say Johns calls like the yankees win are really funny, however, some of his new homerun calls are a bit rediculous, along with his nicknames for some players.

If I had my choice I'd have O'Neill and Cone do every game. O'Neill hasn't been on in a while it seems. I do like Singleton a lot and wouldn't mind having an O'Neill/Singleton or Cone/Singleton setup either.

I would drop Cone from the list. He has become so "stat conscious" that it is like listening to the Elias Sports Bureau doing the game.

    3.) Kay
    4.) Leiter
5.) Flaherty (not as bad as people think)

Good thing about Kay being in the booth this series is that they won't do the whole "Flaherty play-by-play" experiment.

I was at my brother's this evening and watched game 2 on MLB network. It was nice to hear Jim Kaat and Bob Costas. I listened to game 1 on XM. So when I got home and flipped through my TiVoed YES games, I was glad I was spared of a DH with Flash. Ugh....

Kaat may be the best analyst I've ever heard, and has some great stories and lines

Kaat with Singleton was probably the best broadcasting duo I've ever heard...anything/everything since has been second rate.

Flaherty isnt funny or that entertaining but I think he does a good job. His analysis on pitching and catching is usually dead on.

I wish...but something tells me this MLB gig is ideal with him- he can still tour the country in his camper with his wife and do a game or two every second or third week...the days of Kaat on YES are unfortunately long, long gone.

he's dry but accurate- if he's back on YES next year (in the booth, not in the studio) I imagine it'll be after having had some coaching to "spice things up a bit."

Jim Kaat's wife MaryAnn passed away in 2008. Kaat wanted to return to YES but was refused.

Kaat won’t be returning to YES’ Yankees booth. MLB sources said Kaat reached out to YES suits, offering his services on a limited basis at a reasonable price.

Sources said Kaat, who was not looking for major dough or a monster schedule, was told YES had no room for him because of budgetary constraints and scheduling.
    Which really ticks me off.

Flaherty with a nice shout-out for GW
SI: Do you have a secret ambition?
    Igawa: That's secret.
