I've always been a little hazy on the type of contract that he was given. Does his minor league time count as ML service time? So if he's in the minors for 3 years will he be arb eligible?

Win one for The Boss.
No, service time stays the same. All it means is that he has to be on the 40 man roster and his options get used up quicker. Basically, he has to make the team by his 5th year or so, or they risk losing him by DFA if they want to send him down.

He has service time because he was put on the DL before he could be optioned down last year, and if you're injured while with the big league club, you earn service time while on the DL. This does mean he'll reach arbitration and free agency quicker (assuming he ever reaches the majors).

Yeah, I guess this is correct, as Cot's Contracts Blog has him at 1.016 ML Service time (coming into the season I believe).
