And down goes #2 Michigan State.
St. John's also stayed undefeated with a big win against Siena.
Portland knocks off their third big time team (Oregon, UCLA and now Minnesota) and goes to 5-0 for the year. Gonzaga's got some competition.
Huskies pull out a close one against Montana, 63-59, and go to 5-0 on the year. We have a big game in Lubbock on Thursday.
Whew.
Villanova loses top freshman Mouphtao Yarou for the year due to undisclosed illness. MAJOR blow for my boys. Nice to see them ranked #3 in both polls, but that's definitely too high for the amount of freshmen and inexperience they have on the floor at any given time. Now without a true 'big man', they stand to get pushed around a little come BE play.
Apparently it isn't life-threatening, but it must be one hell of an illness if it's keeping him out for the season.
Huskies are #10 in the Coaches poll.![]()
Nice win for the Heels over Michigan St tonight....well played game. Some thoughts on UNC:
1) Impressed with the development of Davis's offensive game. He is becoming a beast down low as he is becoming stronger body-wise as well. The combo of him and Thompson is real good.
2) Henson's biggest asset to the team this year might be his defense...specifically his wingspan and his ability to guard guys on the perimeter. His offensive game is raw and he needs to put on more muscle to play more in the paint. But they had him guarding alot of perimeter guys....and I thought he was fantastic. His wingspan gives guards problems and he had a few pretty blocked shots. How often do you see a 6'10 kid with his wingspan be able to guard perimeter players? I think that will be his big role this season--and I think he can fill it well.
3) I'm floored with the improvement in Drew's game this year. Wasnt sure if he had it in him. That was one of the big concerns with the team this year---what kind of play would they get from the PG position. Last year I thought Drew lacked confidence and just made bad decisions in his limited time. What a difference a year makes---the kid is confident 100%. His decision making is vastly better. He's cut down on the turnovers alot. He's driving to the basket more and drawing defenders....and he is also hitting the outside shot. He keeps playing like this and continues to improve--then he can become one of the better PG's in the country.
4) I like how Graves and Ginyard have fit nicely into their roles. They both do alot of little things that go unnoticed by most casual observers....but the coaches see it.
5) I like Strickland's quickness, slashing ability and he's a better shooter then I expected. Impressed w/him thus far. The overall depth with this team is fantastic.
My concerns thus far are free throw shooting, consistent outside shooting and learning how to close out games. We saw difficulty closing out OSU and Mich St...but this young team will get better w/that with experience. Free throw shooting has to get better. Outside shooting was a huge concern but so far these guys are stepping up and making shots---the only game they didnt was Syracuse and not surprisingly they lost that game. They lost alot of outside shooting w/Lawson, Ellington and Green leaving. Drew appears to have become a perimeter threat---if guys like Ginyard, Graves, Strickland can continue to shoot the way they are....this team can go all the way THIS year. I believe that. There will be growing pains along the way, but by February-March this team can be as good as anyone out there.

The Big Ten-ACC Challenge is tied 3-3 going into the final day tomorrow. I think I'm just shocked that I've called every game correctly so far.

Ed Davis really reminds me of a shorter Andrew Bynum (also hasn't shown any of Bynum's insane ability to get injured). Very long frame with really long arms, good shooting touch, great set of post moves, but not a huge wide banger inside like DeJuan Blair (even though Blair was shorter than Davis). Slightly more on the finesse side for a dominant big guy, but make no mistake, he's got dominant big guy skills. love watching him play

And the ACC lost the Big Ten-ACC Challenge for the first time ever, thanks to Clumpson and Dook.
And the Big 10 wins. Wow.
On the bright side, BC is now the only team in the history of the Challenge to have never lost a game.
Good lord the Pac-10 sucks. Hopefully my Huskies can take advantage of this.
The Cougars blew a 13 point lead with 10 minutes left against Gonzaga, New Mexico beat Cal, and UNLV beat Arizona.
Even though I'm a fan of an ACC team....I dont root for the ACC in this "challenge" cuz I hate most other ACC teams.Originally Posted by BonusCantos

A lot of Carolina fans were rooting the same way you were.Originally Posted by dabomb2045
I only root for the ACC because this might give the committee incentive to take a Big Ten team over an ACC team when rounding out their at-large bids, and that ACC team might be us one of these days. If Clemson holds onto a 23-point lead in the 2nd half at home, the ACC wins. But, as someone on a Carolina board said last night, this game was a microcosm of their last few seasons: get off to a blistering start and choke it all away late.

UCLA, Minnesota and Oregon are big time teams? In the past, maybe, but this year they are all mediocre at best.Originally Posted by YanksFan1992

As the number 10 team in the country should your fans be storming the court after, what they thought, was a win against Texas Tech?

Kentucky looks good against UNC early in the second half. UNC coming back a bit though, it was 15, they cut it to 9.
There are a pile of good teams this year again, which is gonna make for a great tourney. KU, UK, UNC, Duke, Nova and Texas all look strong. Throw in Washington, Butler, Clemson, and 3 or 4 other BEast teams and there is going to be a pile of talent in the sweet 16. (Sorry if i forgot anyones favorite team)

This is another one of those years where I look at the field and can't come up with a clear favorite.
Nice comeback by the Heels. Fell just short, though.

We look very flustered during that big run Kentucky had in the 1st half---lost composure big time. We played much better in the 2nd half. Things like this will happen with a young team---they have go through the experience of playing in hostile environments and learning how to handle that. They will get better w/that as the season goes along. As I mentioned in an earlier post, this is a team that wont peak until Feb-March.Originally Posted by MassNYYfan

As long as Strickland, Zeller, and Henson keep steadily improving like they have been.....we'll make a nice run in the tourney.
Fistpumping like a champion.

It didn't matter. Regardless of whether or not UNC offered Wall and whether or not he wanted to play for them, he was never going to. WWW was always going to make sure and steer John Wall to whatever team Calimari was coaching.Originally Posted by dabomb2045

Funny, he doesn't like Roy Williams because he's "not a good person." Williams is a saint compared to Calimari. It's not just coincidence that both UMass and Memphis had appearances to the Final Four vacated. While he's never been directly implicated in either of the situations, how gullible do you have to be to think that he had no part at all?Originally Posted by just-blaze
And yes, I'm also somewhat bitter about how UConn's recruiting has never been that great. Guys like him, and guys like WWW funnelling players to him, don't make it any easier to get talent.
UST Medical School - Class of 2012
Yeah, they didn't even look like they belonged on the same floor as Kentucky during that run. I went back and forth between wanting Roy to call a timeout to stop the bleeding and letting them keep playing just to see how they responded.Originally Posted by dabomb2045
Definitely not disappointed. They got it handed to them during that run for sure, but the big picture looks pretty good.

Huskies knocked off Cal State Northridge to go to 6-1 on the year. We've got a huge game against Georgetown up next.

Ok, now i don't feel so bad about UConn not totally destroying Harvard... they beat BC.
They're a very athletic team for an ivy league school. Plus Jeremy Lin is baller. He would start on most teams in NCAA, regardless of conference.
UST Medical School - Class of 2012
I knew someone was going to bring that up.

nah, you guys had a starter out, right? This wasn't so much a knock on you, as praise for harvard. They're playing GTown next, and I think they can actually put up a good game.Originally Posted by BonusCantos

We had Rakim Sanders (best player) out, but that's really not an excuse. We beat Michigan, Providence, and Miami without him. Harvard beat BC by 12 last year, literally about 2 days after BC handed UNC's asses to them in the Dean Dome, and I just assumed they got caught sleeping. I didn't think they could lose to this team in consecutive games, but I watched the whole game and they played like crap.Originally Posted by trapper700
Harvard is definitely an improved team from the last time we saw them, but like I said, still not an excuse. BC should beat this team 29 times out of 30.
I take it back, Kentucky's good.
Theyre super talented and athletic. I think they will run into a team in the tourney that plays more solid ball and get knocked off though. Such a classic Calipari team, they beat you because they are simply better basketball players and better athletes than you, no tricks.Originally Posted by YanksFan1992

Finally someone is bringing up the Cuse. That zone is a killer so far. Very athletic and active in it. Jimmy once again has gotten his players to buy into it. No superstars on team and they play very unselfish basketball, however they do need to improve on their rebounding and for the love of god, can one Syracuse team hit the freaking free throws?Originally Posted by Clete
Just imagine how Memphis fans feel when they hear about John Wall lighting up the scoreboard every night. They basically had this guy.
