Ichiro has bleeding ulcer, goes on DL

LAS VEGAS — The Mariners won't have Ichiro when they open the season Monday in Minneapolis against the Twins.
Ichiro, diagnosed as having had a bleeding ulcer, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to March 31.

A-Rod blames the WBC, therefore, you blame the WBC.

wow - I read a report saying they were worried about him because he was really tired and a few days off didn't seem to help and he was going to see a doctor..I have regular ulcers (not bleeding) and you would think he would have felt some pain...maybe they just didn't say all his symptoms.

Odd that his first trip to the DL would be for a bleeding ulcer...

He might have been slightly anemic from the blood loss. I wouldn't be surprised if the ulcers were from NSAID's, i.e. Aleve/Naproxin or other types of pain killing meds that can cause ulcers in the GI tract due to various reasons.

Matsui gets a lot of crap in Japan for not playing in the WBC and now you see why the Yankees don't let him near that tourney.

Even the guy who never gets hurt just got hurt.

He probably would have gotten ulcers whether he went to the WBC or not. They're not an injury, they're a medical condition.

With Morrow becoming their closer and Ichiro getting hurt, it sounds like another great year for the Mariners.

Yes, we in Seattle manage to survive despite the fact that we only have one sports World Championship to our credit (or two if you count The Storm, which most do not).
I guess it will be all the more sweet when/if it finally happens.

The news about Fredy is very disturbing. I hope that it's not true (and that he is punished to the full extent of the law if it is).

The good new is, Sounders FC can win on the road without him...
3-0 now and leading the league in points!

Kasey Keller may be a bit ancient, but he's awesome (always did have a thing for "keepers")

Mariners had to take Ichiro DL decision 'out of his hands' | News Tribune

An emotional Ichiro Suzuki all but begged his general manager and manager to let him play despite ulcers, but Jack Zduriencik said he couldn’t let himself be persuaded.

“This was serious,” GM Zduriencik said. “We had to take the decision out of his hands because he did not want to do this. We put him on the disabled list. He wanted to negotiate.”

On the DL for the first time in his major league career, Ichiro told doctors his stomach had been bothering him since before the World Baseball Classic began last month, and that he had taken medications to ease the pain.

“He was treating the symptoms, so when he got to Arizona and started feeling light-headed and tired, we had a pretty good idea where to start looking,” Dr. Mitch Storey said. “It might have been caused by bacteria, by stress, which produces acid – we don’t know yet, but with the tests we took, we should know Monday.”

Ichiro began a course of medication and rest, limited to a strict schedule of when and for how long he could work out the next few days.

“You’re talking about a warrior, and telling him he wasn’t going to be on this team opening day was emotional for him,” manager Don Wakamatsu said. “Everyone on this team knows what he was willing to risk to play. We couldn’t let him risk it.”

    :::

Ulcers are relatively rare among players – Zduriencik joked that general managers often get them – but Storey said that’s because the condition is often caught early.

“If a player complains of stomach pains, we usually take care of that with medication and it doesn’t go further,” Storey said. “Ichiro played with it, would have one good day, then a bad one, but didn’t stop playing or working.”

OAKLAND -- Right fielder Ichiro Suzuki had another busy offensive day in Peoria, Ariz., on Friday afternoon, going 5-for-10 in a five-inning Minor League intrasquad game, and running the bases for the first time.
His workload could increase a little more on Saturday.

"We're going to see how he feels in the morning," Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said prior to Seattle's game against Oakland, "and he might play some outfield tomorrow. We expect him to be on a plane on Sunday going to Seattle and he would join the team for Monday's workout."

The Mariners are scheduled to work out at Safeco Field on Monday afternoon in preparation for Tuesday afternoon's home opener against the Angels. Ichiro won't play in that game, but could be activated for Wednesday night's game.
I'm glad he seems to be recovering so well.

Re: Ichiro has bleeding ulcer, goes on DL

    From Baker's blog today...
The Mariners worked out for about two hours today at a very chilly Safeco Field. Ichiro went through the full drills without any problems and seems to be on course to be activated on Wednesday. I asked Jack Zduriencik whether Ichiro was on course to be activated, and here's what he said:

"We're going to get the blood test results this afternoon. He looks great. His batting practice was terrific. I think his energy level is back. Physically, he looks good. We'll see. I don't anticipate anything. I'd be surprised if anything went wrong."

And Don Wakamatsu ,speaking at the beginning of the workout, said: "We're going to watch him work out today, but everything looks like it's headed that way (toward Ichiro being activated on Wednesday).''Wakamatsu said, by the way, that Ichiro will hit leadoff, despite the hot start by Endy Chavez.. He's mulling over whether to bat Chavez second or ninth.

I asked Zduriencik if he still feels good about his decision to put Ichiro on the disabled list. Remember, Ichiro fought to stay off the DL, and still says he wishes he had been allowed to play.

"Oh, yeah, no question it was the right decision,'' he said. "This is a 162-game season. To have lost him later in the year, if this thing prolonged itself, or we didn't take care of it, it would not been a good thing for this club. Now we're going to have him back, and we look forward to having him in the lineup."

The key here is 'bleeding' ulcer. If it was in the duodenum, which most are, he would have been iron-deficient (90% of your iron is absorbed here). After a few days, he would have had iron-deficiency anemia - symptoms including fatigue, etc. This is all hypothetical, but it is not as light as you are making it out to be .
