    Wine Recommendations

Can anyone recommend some inexpensive wines that taste good? I'm looking for something under $15 because I want to buy a few bottles and I don't want to spend a lot of money. I don't drink wine because I don't really like the taste of it but I want to keep some around for when I have have guests.

I don't know the difference between a chardonnay and a pinot grigio or a shiraz and other reds. I've tried different kinds of red and white wines -- some inexpensive and some very expensive -- and I never liked any of them (except for Fat Bastard Chardonnay because I like the name) so I have no idea what to buy. Any help would be appreciated.

What kind of meals are you having? Do you like sweet, semi-sweet, dry? White, rose, red? Cali, NY, French, Italian?

    Re: Wine Recommendations

White's are easier to find, of course, but not nearly as good for you.

Buy wines from Chile and Oz. Very good, and usually reasonably priced.

If you like Italian (who doesn't ), buy from the big regions, but just not the big names.Very, very good Chianti can be had for around $15.

I usually just drink what I like. The dessert wines would be an exception, of course

Right now you can get some really good Malbecs from Argentina around the $9-$12 range.

Domestically, Berringer makes some good wines in that range. While they are well-known for White Zin, they make a good Cab and Red Zin.

I'm just trying to open up the discussion. I personally only drink wine at bars. That's usually the cheaper "jug" wine that they have (tastes not much better'n Boone Farm or wot-evah they call it). I've never had a bottle w/dinner, so I don't worry about that. Makes life cheaper.

My sister who works in the wine industry recently recommended Smoking Loon's syrah and Black Mountain's pinot noir as easy to find, cheap and good options.

You're making yourself suffer for no reason

There are places that have 2 for 1 sales. There are very, very good Italian wines out there for $10-12 (figure $2 a glass).

Although, there are some very good jug wines from Italia, too.

If I'm looking for something specific I ask at the liquor store. They are usually pretty knowledgeable about wines and can point you in the right direction.

That's what I do when I'm buying red wine.

I only drink Pinot Grigio, and the only one I like is Santa Margarita. The cheapest I can find it is $20 a bottle, but I hear Costco sells it for about $16 or $17.

How much is it in a liquor store there? I've seen a range from $20 where I buy it up to $26.

In restaurants it's marked up pretty high too.

I'll have to try that Trish. I'm drinking Kendall Jackson Chardonnay right now.

I like some chardonnays but find a lot of them a bit too "oaky" for me. I'll try that one though.

Once in a while I can find it on sale for $20. I usually spend 23 or 24.

...and true, a lot more in a restaurant.

Now I remember. I used to use some $10-15 port when making meat. I should use that, since I've been using mostly tomato soup, onions and spices. Pretty good wine tastes better than the cheaper "cooking wine", I believe.

I can't really say what meals because I just wanted to buy some wine to have around the house in case I have company. I haven't thought far enough ahead about what type of meal it'll go with.

I'm pretty much a wine idiot so I have no idea what country/region I'd prefer although I do like white wine better than red even if red is healthier for you.

Wow, so many responses. I'd better start reading.

That's what I do when I buy good wines as holiday gifts but I just wanted to buy some to keep around the house for any occasion. Maybe I should just tell any future guests to bring their own bottle. I should just buy some vodka, rum and tequila instead since mixed drinks are easy.

We buy the larger bottles of wine that are about $12- like Mondovi. I can give you the names of a few others but they are really good wines and not very expensive. They are bigger bottles too so they last a bit longer.

That's a good solution. I always tend to bring my own because I really only drink the pinot, and some of the cheap pinots are pretty gross.

How long can you keep a bottle of wine after it's been opened? If it's not finished off by my guests, it could sit around a while because I doubt I would drink it.

I know you're supposed to chill white wines but not red wines. After you open a bottle of red, are you then supposed to refrigerate it or keep it at room temperature. Yeah, I really am a wine idiot.

With whites, you can put them in the fridge and they'll be fine. With reds, we drink it almost every night so they don't sit around for long but if you leave it on the counter for longer than a few days, I don't like the taste of it.

Thanks. I know some people who put ice cubes in their red wines because they don't like to drink it warm. Are they heathens for doing that?

Nah, do what you want - who cares what people think?

I do have a funny story though....one of our best friends Eddie is not a big wine drinker and this woman brought over wine one night to his house - she paid $140- for this bottle of wine and it was damn good. I can't even describe how smooth it was. Eddie being Eddie put an ice cube in it. We all gasped and laughed our asses off.

Wine....yuck. The only time I drank wine was on my senior trip cruise in Greece....and that was only because it was a free cocktail hour for all Americans on board (4th of July).

For Red Wines, go with some South American wines. They are usually reasonably priced and great wines for novice wine drinkers.

Get out It's $11 (at the most) here.

Heathens is not the word that comes to mind.

I like red wine chilled. Not the expensive stuff, though.

    The Merlot is tasty.

If they put ice in their beer, use a straw and put it into a wine goblet and an umbrella thingy, then "dead" may be the proper term if they do this in front of me.

Why not just keep beer in case you get company? Unless it's friends of the family.

You may need a small wine cooler for about $100 or so. That's more than the bottles themselves cost.

If you cook a lot, then having a good selection may help.

I'm pretty much a wine idiot so I have no idea what country/region I'd prefer although I do like white wine better than red even if red is healthier for you.

Wow, so many responses. I'd better start reading.
Red with meat; white with fish and chicken. I have no idea what rose goes with. Crabmeat? Lobster? Who knows?

Who's to know if I have steamed fish and red wine? (Trish, Jeanne & Karen, please remain conscious).
