Thread: What if Eric Duncan...

  1. #1

    What if Eric Duncan...

Has a good spring training, perhaps hitting 250/340/450? Eric Duncan is a natural third baseman, who has decent first base skills and had, maybe still has, potential to be a sweet swinging lefty especially at Yankee stadium... if he puts up numbers would you want Eric Duncan as your starting third baseman?

No. He has to prove he can hit at AAA first & that window has been closing for the past few years.

Duncan is yesterday's news so to speak. It appears he hit his ceiling in the minors a few years ago.

The fact that you set his bar at .250/.340/.450 sorta answers your question.

Duncan isn't dead ... he could still break out (he wouldn't be the first player to break out after age 23)

... but it takes a full season (not ST) to "break out". He's not on the radar screen at this point.

    Re: What if Eric Duncan...

I share Trevor's opinion. I believe it was like 2004 when I kept thinking he was going to be the guy to take over the bag once Giambi was gone. Injuries and his inability to remember how to hit consistently screwed everything up.....but he's still young as hell! I still think if he was tearing it up in the system, and was called up and did well he'd be traded. I think the organization's patience with him has pretty much evaporated though.

John, somewhere right now Drew Henson is playing Madden 2005, and leading the Detroit Lions to the Super Bowl. Who's the MVP? Of course it's QB Drew Henson. Then when he's done playing, he's going to set his clock an hour ahead so he gets up for work on time. He's the voice of some of his brother Jim's famous Muppets.

Guys who don't get invited to ST generally don't have much of a shot of becoming starting everyday players on this team. Especially flame out prospects that have barely shown any real promise for the past 4 years.

Sure Duncan has a chance. If he hits 400-500-700 in AAA

Trust me on this. If he didn't get a ST invite his chances are about as dead as a trout in the Pacific. I had a good friend get drafted out of HS to the Blue Jays and then he got (a form of cancer I won't mention for anonymity). Either way, when the team found out he was put into A league and eventually fazed out. This is a kid that to this day hits 40 HR's a year in modified pitch softball. Could he hit 20 in the majors? I'll bet my BMW on it. But talent has its price, you fall ill, hit a bad streak etc and you are out of luck. There are just a few Carl Pavano's out there that get good breaks. The rest of us are stuck with a hope and a dream.

I don't mention myself because I played varsity hockey and baseball. Hockey being my first choice but when the crappiest player on the team (who's father owned the local sport shop) "donated" NEW jersey's to the team and the team vote for me as captain was overridden I quit. I've never been on ice skates or in cleats since...Call me a quitter but I'm not one for politics or money in sports. If you are a gamer then bring it.

That kid that got my spot is now sharpening skates at his daddy's pro shop with nothing to show for his life.

Duncan is done in this system, Ransom is clearly better than him both off and def at third.

At first look, Duncan doesn't appear to be the answer. But if they bring him into Spring Training and he has a very, very impressive spring, then I'd have to say still no.

Reminds me when I was cut from my HS team. Coaches went with the kid just because he was a switch hitter and could throw an effective breaking pitch. Completely ignored my consecutive games streak in my wiffle ball league. I havent put on my skates since...........so no I dont think eric duncan will be a viable option for the Yankee's third base situation...........im not bitter

You forgot the part about how they only gave you orange Gatorade when you wanted lemon-lime so you took your ball and went home. And you also forgot about how that event also made you quit playing guitar.

    Back to the thread topic.

If Duncan does prove to be the answer at 3B, what will become of ARod when he's ready to play again. Can ARod be the utility guy? We know he can play 3B & SS, what about 2B? He could probably learn 1B without much trouble.

I've been arguing for something like this for a long time. If he's our best hitter, why waste his ABs when there is no one on base or the game is out of reach? Why not just use him as a pinch hitter in the most important situations, when the game is on the line? The guys who want to bat him cleanup, regardless of the game situation, are probably the same clowns who think Joba should be in the rotation.

It would depend on his ability to play 1B & 2B. You wouldn't want him to pinch hit for Tex in an important time of the game if he can't go in there and field the position.

With Joba, on the other hand, we already know he's lights out in the important 8th inning.

You can always put Posada at either position. As we all know, he started as a 2nd baseman and he's played in 20 games at first in the majors

Its really a last ditch effort, but if he turns things around at the plate and can play the OF he might get another year in our system but probably not in the majors. However nothing we've seen from him in the past years gives us any indication that this will happen. I don't have a problem with him getting ABs in a weak AAA OF (outside of Jackson) though, so why not? I'd be VERY surprised if we ever saw him in a NY Yankee uniform though. I doubt he is in the Yankee system next year.

    Re: What if Eric Duncan...

Heres what we do, we kidnap Albert Pujols and load his blood with iron, and we do the same to Duncan. Then we send them both skipping off into an electrical storm where they will both be struck by lightning and Duncan will acquire all of Pujols abilities.

At that point we wake up and realize that experiencing the microwave from the perspective of the food was a bad idea....

I'm a better choice than Eric Duncan. We might as well put Shelley Duncan there, at least he's got the reach advantage.

The guys who want to bat him cleanup, regardless of the game situation, are probably the same clowns who think Joba should be in the rotation.
That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard. You're going to waste his at-bats as a PINCH HITTER????? That's stupid. Once you use him as a pinch-hitter, he's in the game and all the guess work is taken out for the opposing manager. But if you leave him on the bench all game and never actually use him, the opposing manager will always be in fear of him coming up at any time, all the way up until the last out, so the effect will last all game. Geez, use some common sense.
