    Socks the Cat dies

A moment of silence, please. That was one old cat.

    http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/29307075/

Former First Cat Socks, one of the world’s most famous felines, died Friday at the age of 20 after battling throat cancer since November. A stray cat rescued by the Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, Socks lived in the governor’s mansion in Arkansas and later moved with the family to the White House.

At least the cat's name was spelled correctly.

    Re: Socks the Cat dies

    When I was the Prez
And old Socks was a kit
Over hills and meadows we'd stray
Just a POTUS and his cat
We were both full of fun
    We governed together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin' pool
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old Socks was right there
    To the rescue he came
He jumped in and then pulled me out

As the years fast did roll
    Old Socks he grew old
His eyes were fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him, Bubba

    With hands that were trembling
    I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Socks faithful head
    I just couldnt do it
    I wanted to run
I wish they would shoot me instead

    He came to my side
    And looked up at me
And laid his old head on my knee
I had struck the best friend that a man ever had
I cried so I scarcely could see

    Old Socks he has gone
    Where the good kitties go
And no more with old Socks will I roam
But if cats have a heaven
    Theres one thing I know
Old Socks has a wonderful home

I find it interesting that they abandoned the cat after they left the WH. I guess it never really was their "pet", it was just there during photo ops.

They didn't abandon him. Betty Currie asked for him.

    Igawa: That's secret.

I thought that Socks and Buddy the doggie didn't get along, and Betty Currie wanted Socks, so it was easier to re-home him than the dog. I think he was a "real" pet, and he seemed to have a good life (although Mike's comment is really funny).

    RIP Socks.
