    The Dodgers released Andruw Jones....

Do you think the Yanks forget their fixation with Cameron and try to sign Jones? He can't really command a big salary....

Or does last season's show he may be through. I think he's still one of the best defensive CF in the last 15 years. I'm sure he has something to prove.

He can't command any salary.......he's already getting it from LA.

    League minimum.

If the Dodgers released him, they're responsible for his salary. A team signing him only has to pay the MLB minimum, and the Dodgers are on the hook for the rest.

They're paying him $15M no matter what, and they're still telling him to get lost. They certainly seem to think he's entirely washed up.

Ok..we've established that he gets paid the minimum. Is he worth a flyer?

Not sure I'm following. What's the big deal if he returns to Atlanta?

Re: The Dodgers released Andruw Jones....

I would love the yanks to offer him a 1 year $2.5 million deal with incentives...it wasnt too long ago that he was a .270/35/100 guy playing a great CF. Maybe in this Yanks lineup, batting somewhere around the 7 or 8 hole, he could produce again.

He is going back to Atlanta but this is definitly not an experiment the yankees should try.

Why would you do that? Offer him a contract at league minimum and THEN give him incentives that raise the value of the contract.

Even with that, it's not worth the roster space, and it's just a head ach that we don't need. If he couldn't handle the pressure in LA, how is he going to handle the pressures in New York?

Re: The Dodgers released Andruw Jones....

Offer him a minor league deal for minimum salary with incentives if he reaches the major league level. If he still wants to go to Atlanta so be it.

We don't have room on the 40-man to offer him a major league deal though and it appears Atlanta won't either.

There's not a lot of point to incentives. I don't think they'd get added on to what the Dodgers owe him, any more than his base salary is added on. Whether he reaches the incentives or not, he's still going to earn $15M.

The only difference is that he could earn some more of his money up front. His release was actually part of a deal Jones struck with the Dodgers a couple of weeks ago. He agreed to defer most of his salary, to be paid over the next 6 years, so the Dodgers could free up some payroll. In return, they agreed to either trade him or release him.

When somebody pays you $21.1 million not to play with them, I suspect its probably a good idea to pass on that player.

There's also the fact that they have Kemp, Ethier, and almost certainly Manny in their outfield. He doesn't really fit their squad. They restructured his contract in part to free up $ for Manny, no doubt.

As horrible as he has been, I think he will get a major league deal and I would be surprised if he accepted a minor league deal.

What in the world has happened to Andruw Jones? It's very unusual for someone's productivity to drop off that much at his age. Could there be some lingering health issues? Has he gotten lazy? It seems hard to believe that at his age and only 3 seasons after being a very serious contender for the MVP that Jones would put up an OPS+ which was dwarfed by Brett Gardner's.

Someone will take a chance on Jones. Little risk with a potentially huge payoff. If Jones doesn't snap out of it, nothing is really lost.

We could sign him to play CF for the league minimum and either trade/cut Melky or start Gardner in the minors.

Give Jones a month to play and see if Gardner or Melky can take his job from him. If so, we cut him and are only out the league minimum.

This is just the type of high reward low risk thing the Yankees should be looking into.

Like this idea very very much. If Jones truly is done, what difference does it make to us? He'd at least push the fallible duo of Cabrera/Gardner.

    I'd agree with you if Melky's OPS+ wasn't double Jones' in 2008 (68-34).

    414-209.

The reason he had few AB's is because among other things, his performance sucked.

I think he could get a 800K to 1 mil. There has to be a few teams that would take him for the minimum, so someone will have to make themselves standout.

It probably won't be a matter of whether Gardner or Melky can take the job from Jones. It'll be whether Jones stinks even worse than the others. I see it as more like a lose-lose situation than a win-win. The Yankees should be looking to acquire a competent major-league center fielder, not a "maybe he's not as bad as Melky."

The money he makes from his new team is irrelevant. It doesn't matter a bit to him whether they pay him $400K or $800K. That only matters to the Dodgers.

signing jones would be a good idea if he could still hit, still field in centre and still run. as he can't do any of these, it's kinda pointless.

Plus, I don't think money is the lure for him that it is for many other players. Didn't he take less money to stay in Atlanta a few years ago? He only went to The Dodgers because The Braves said they could not pay him a representative salary. Let him go to Atlanta - I'm tired of The Yankees experimenting with older players.

I don't think it would be a huge risk to sign Jones. We all know what his potential is and he is still fairly young so the problems he has had the past few seasons were probably not caused by age. This might be a mechanical error like A-Rod had back in the day and Kevin Long could help fix it. I say that if you sign this guy to a minor league contract and give him an opportunity, it is a good decision. Even if he is only a 4th OF or plays in Scranton for a year trying to get his act together. I still believe Jones has some potential and we should give him a look if it comes at a low cost.
