Cutler's going to the Bears for Orton and 2 picks. F*CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really wanted us to trade for him. Sigh.

I guess its back to plan B: Sign Jeff Garcia and draft Mark Sanchez--trading up if necessary

    Jesus Montero since June 1 (286 at-bats):
    .325/.386/.605/.991
    July 1 (182 at-bats):
    .348/.417/.658/1.075

I think the Seahawks might take him as well. They really like him, and if Stafford is gone it'll probably come down to Raji, Crabtree and Sanchez (assuming all three are available), and they might just take Sanchez.

Thats also possible, but I know the niners had guys at our pro day yesterday scouting him specifically. Word was they really want him.

It's voluntary, but he'd be making a statement by not showing.

A couple of notable number changes: WR David Clowney is now wearing No. 87, Laveranues Coles' old number. QB Erik Ainge is wearing No. 10, Chad Pennington's old number.

Also it seems like the Skins are going to pull off the trade for Cutler

2 1st rounders a 3rd rounder and Orton (to which Ratliff, Ainge, and Clemens) don't equal.

Kinda sad to see him go to the Bears, kinda not.

They have done a good job building this team up--via FA and the draft. A team that doesnt want to win immediately doesnt spend all the $$ it has the past two offseasons---it doesnt bring in a Jenkins, Pace, Scott and Leonhard. They dont trade for a Thomas Jones.

All those moves are "lets go for it" type moves. And so is trading for Cutler....but its also a move for the future. It accomplishes both things. He's 25 and just entering his prime. He's gonna get better. He's already very good and IMO will be a franchise QB....he could be "our guy" here for the next 10 years. This isnt like we're trading for a 37 year old whi's best days are behind him. We can win a Super Bowl w/him next season. I believe that. The rest of the team around him is more then good enough.

Ratliff? This team isnt goin anywhere anytime soon. Same w/Clemens. Yes we have a good defense...but why not have a good defense AND a good offense? Teams that do that win 13-14 games and win championships. Lets not forget how good this team was last year when we got great play from our QB....we were 8-3, beating the Titans and Pats on the road and looking like one of the best teams in the league. You trade for the franchise guy if you have the chance to do it. Whatever it takes.
Well I can't argue with any of that. I will say that I don't think we could have matched the Bears package because Orton is worth more than either Clemens or Ratliff, and it does seem they wanted a QB back in this trade.

I still have faith that this will be a very good team next year. I think we can still upgrade the offense from what it was last year and I do believe in Ratliff. Clemens also has never had a real shot. And giving up 2 first rounders + something of real value is a lot to trade for anyone.

I'm not mad at the Jets for not getting Cutler...just mad at the situation. The Bears gave up alot and it seems the Broncos didnt wanna trade him inside the conference. So it is what it is.

I think this is a 6-7 win team w/Ratliff, Clemens or Ainge. Neither of these guys are much of anything IMO. Either one would perform similar to or just as bad as Favre did the final 4 games last year....I just dont think any of them are any good and will be productive NFL starters on any team. I'm not quite sure why you are so high on Ratliff--I'm curious to hear why you are. So the defense and running game will win them some games, but they will be an under .500 team without a QB.

Now if they sign Garcia? I think we can win 10-11 games. He isnt great, but he's very solid.

My plan would be to sign Garcia to like a 2-year deal and get our QB of the future in this draft. I REALLY want Sanchez...I am very high on him. We'll have to trade up for him, but if thats what we need to do...then so be it.

God, in the wake of thinking about having Cutler as the cornerstone going forward, these other QB options just look worse and worse.

Unfortunately, I think the Jets see Freeman and Sanchez as close enough, and if that's the case then I hope we trade down.

I'm starting to wonder if they have a plan for this offense. We have no #1 WR and no proven QB. I wish they'd sign Garcia, who I think is a great fit for this offense even at 39. Even if he doesn't start at least he'll be there if Clemens or Ratliff can't get the job done.

We'll see what happens at the draft...but I also feel that the offense is being neglected right now.

I dont see how Ryan expects to win if he goes into the season with the 3-headed joke at QB, no playmakers at WR, and an unhappy Jones.

I understand he's about defense and everything--but unless we have the 2000 Ravens or 1985 Bears D...you cant win games with an offense that does nothing.

What do you guys think of going after Plaxico? We need a WR badly, and that might make me overlook his character issues. It'd also mean that we wouldn't need to even think about using our 1st rounder on a WR, so we could pick another position.

I dont believe his trial starts till June. What happens if you sign him...and it drags into training camp? What happens if he gets convicted and goes to jail for awhile?

Way too much baggage and he is totally a "me first" player with a bad attitude. I'd rather the Jets find a WR in the draft.

I thought about that too but with the uncertainty of his criminal case and an almost certain suspension by the NFL, I don't want anything to do with him.

Im waiting till the draft to go into panic mode. I really cant fathom the Jets would go into the season with Ratliff/Clemens/Ainge. It makes NO friggin sense--esp when the rest of your team is championship caliber.

Yeah, I hope not. I don't know about championship caliber--I have a tough time attaching that distincting to the Jets based on years and years of watching the Jets --but they definitely have a chance to be very good, and without a decent QB or WR, it makes it a heck of a lot tougher.

But even if we draft a QB, is there really a QB that you're comfortable drafting that you think would be able to step right in at a high level? There's often a pretty steep learning curve, and it's very likely that a rookie QB wouldn't be able to start right away, or if he is, that he wouldn't be that good, even if he ends up being good.

Probably not. Sanchez is the guy I want...but even he would have to sit for at least a year, maybe even two. However this is why I wanted to sign Garcia. I dont think people realize that he is still VERY good. He's had ratings in the 90's his last three years--taken his team to the playoffs two of those years (would have been three if the Bucs didnt choke the last few games this year). He's still good. Not a great arm, but a mobile QB who is accurate. He's almost like Pennington except a) slightly better arm and b) is mobile and can run.

So I wanted to sign him and groom Sanchez to take over in 1-2 years. With Garcia here, I think this team could have won 11-12 games and really been a factor in the championship chase...assuming we found a good WR in the draft. However with the 3-headed "monster" We'll be lucky to win 6. Yes our defense is much better. But unless Ryan invents a time machine, goes back and kidnaps the 2000 Ravens or 85 Bears D....we're gonna need to score points on offense...and to do that we need a good QB.

Now that Garcia is signed....I dont know what else to do. I fear Ryan is gonna go with what we have.

Jets fans are delusional if they think they can win with any of those three.

Agreed, that's why I stressed the word "win."

Who was the last rookie QB to win the Super Bowl?

    Yep.

Regarding the D being historically good, I don't think it's probable, but I also think there's a non-zero chance of it.

Perhaps we if go into the season with low expectations, we will surprise ourselves.

    Brady Quinn anyone?

Apparently he's on the block per Pete Prisco.

Why? Neither of them are proven NFL QB's and Ratliff wouldn't cost anything to get while Quinn would. Lets see what Ratliff is... I'm very sure that Quinn isn't any kind of long term answer.

Please elaborate why. Quinn has more talent and ability in his pinky than Ratliff has in his entire body.

That is based on nothing but draft position and your opinion. Quinn has never proved anything as an NFL player and many people (including myself) thought that he was insanely overrated coming out of Notre Dame because of his charlie weis connection (back when people thought weis was a good coach.)

I am a Notre Dame fan and while we didn't win any bowl games he did a great job at Notre Dame. He has the arm strength to make all the throws and I think not being thrown into a starting position immediately is going to be huge for him. I guess we'll have to wait and see who is right here but I like my odds of Quinn over Ratliff anyday.

You're overrating him because of the college program he played in just like you're underrating Ratliff becuase he played in a spread in Utah.

It would make my year if the Jets nabbed Quinn.

Ratliff is nobody who will have a nothing career. If the Jets can get Quinn....I'm all for it. I watched everyone of Quinn's games in college and I'm well aware of his strengths and weaknesses.

Im with Mecca..him sitting for 2 years will help him immensely.

    Jesus Montero since June 1 (286 at-bats):
    .325/.386/.605/.991
    July 1 (182 at-bats):
    .348/.417/.658/1.075

First of all you have nothing to base your bashing of Ratliff on. Second of all Quinn couldn't beat out mediocre QB's to start. It's not like he was sitting behind great players.

If Ratliff is so great...then why is he in the position he is in? Im sick of Jets fans trying to convince themselves that Ratliff is the next Tom Brady--based on what exactly?

What position is he in exactly? A backup? He's only a 3rd year player and he was undrafted. He was also the best QB in the NFL last preseason.

Which means nothing. Playing against vanilla defenses and alot of players who will be packing groceries shortly.

Brett Gardner was also one of the best hitters in Spring Training too. You don't put any stock in that (which nobody should) so why put any in an NFL preseason?

Clemens has the early edge. Still plenty of time though.
