Thread: The Official 2009 New York Jets Thread

Re: The Official 2009 New York Jets Thread

Bart Scott reportedly is going to give the Ravens a chance to match the Jets' five-year, $40 million contract offer.
In an effort to break the story, many national sources said the deal was officially agreed to. But it was never signed and it now appears Scott is having second thoughts and wants to give Baltimore another shot. We don't see why Baltimore wouldn't match now, but it's no lock. We'll find out shortly.

Losing an aging, mouthy possession receiver is hardly a franchise-crushing move. Draft a speed receiver on the first round if there's one available and I'll be happy.

    Sure sounds like it.

A year after the arrival of cornerback Asante Samuel prompted Lito Sheppard to crow for a raise or a trade, he could finally be getting both.

First, the trade. According to Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News and Tim Graham of ESPN.com, the Eagles are talking with the Jets about a trade for the two-time Pro Bowler. Sheppard will visit the Jets' facility on Saturday.

Sheppard's departure seemed inevitable once the Eagles re-signed cornerback Joselio Hanson to a new deal with an annual average putting him ahead of both Sheppard's and Sheldon Brown's current deals.

If/when a trade is done, Sheppard likely will be getting a new contract. He's signed through 2011 at a base salary of $3 million this season.

    Here ya go:

A fifth rounder and a conditional draft pick to the Eagles. Great trade for the Jets, and I think they should go for it all and try and get Ray Lewis know.

    I love Tannenbaum.

This is like the Vilma trade in reverse for us.

On top of that, add Scott and probably Ivy, mixed with Ryan's attitude and we have a D that is looking top 5 in the league.

Not nearly as good as he played last year in the playoffs. On an average team he is an average player at best. With all the defensive talent around Baltimore it made it easier for him to make plays.

Re: The Official 2009 New York Jets Thread

I'm loving Rex Ryan. I believe that if anyone is going to actually turn Gang Green into a truly elite and nasty defense for the first time I can ever remember, this is the guy to do it. I love the Bart Scott move and I would love the Leonhard move. I can't say I truly know how good these guys are, as I don't watch the Ravens, but I do know that our SS's last year sucked (Eric Smith was truly horrendous, and Abram Elam, despite that great INT against Buffalo, wasn't much better) so Leonhard would be a huge upgrade even if he is just an "average" player.

Assuming we get him, we now have, on paper at least, a pretty good defense. Our secondary should be very good with Revis, Rhodes, Leonhard, and Shepphard. Our LB's should be pretty great with Pace, Harris, Scott, and Thomas. Our DL, despite having Jenkins in the middle, still needs improvement at both DE positions. It certainly would be nice if Rex can get Gholston to do something.

Anyways, I'm pumped. I've always wanted the Jets to have a truly great defense, and I think we are on our way. Just get a good backup DT so that we can keep Jenkins fresh and a great pass rushing DE then I think we'd be dominant. Of course, those two things are much, much, much easier said than done.

Lastly, it's pretty clear that we're going to be a run, run, short pass type of team next year, and try to win on defense. My guess is we'll draft a RB somewhere in the first 4 rounds to share time with Jones and Leon. I also think we'll bring in some pretty crappy veteran QB (like a Sage Rosenfelds type) that will be in a legitimate competition with Clemens and Ratliff. I also love the Brandon Moore re-signing. It's always a plus to keep the OL together.

As of right now....the QB situation is what will hold this team back.

    Jesus Montero since June 1 (286 at-bats):
    .325/.386/.605/.991
    July 1 (182 at-bats):
    .348/.417/.658/1.075

If the Jets bring in a Jeff Garcia type then I like their odds to make the playoffs and make some noise this season.

Trade up for Sanchez...sign a veteran like Garcia. This team is built to win NOW, even more so with the moves they are making.

You dont make these types of moves and then hand the keys to the QB position to a nobody.

Trading up for Sanchez , they gotta get either trade with san fran or the bengals who are 9th i think . Cause i cant see San fran knocking back Sanchez after missing out on Cassel.

Well if we are built to win now, why draft a QB in the first round instead of someone that can help us win right now? The QB will take at least a year+ to develop.

Let Sanchez sit for a year...he'll be ready to go in 2010. This is why I say sign a Garica type veteran--someone who can step in, and play well enough to help the Jets win games.

We do need our franchise QB at some point. I happen to be a big Sanchez fan and he's the guy I want.

I can't say I know much of anything about Sanchez except that he went to USC and USC was one of the top 3 teams in the NFL. I'm cool with signing a Garcia type, but I'm hopeful that Ratliff is our QB of the future.

Ratliff isnt the answer and neither is Clemens. Gotta look outside the organization.

I can chime in here since I saw every single snap he took at USC.

Sanchez needs to sit for a year IMO, maybe even two, he just didn't have a ton of reps in college. He's got the arm, the intelligence and the drive to become a great QB but he needs to work on a few things. There were times this past year where we'd have a 3rd and 2 and he could have easily picked up the first down by checking down or simply running the ball himself but he would instead heave it 40 yards down field trying to make the big play - He did this very well in the Rose Bowl but it wasn't that way all season long. That said, he was behind the weakest offensive line we've had in a long time and the offense was pretty inconsistent due to penalties and play calling and he still threw the 2nd most TD's in a season every by a USC quarterback.

The Jets would be a pretty good fit for him IMO. They've got a pretty solid Offensive line from what I remember.

Bart Scott. Instantly becomes my favorite player.

I've never had a guy ascend to my favorite player on a team I followed so quickly as he did.

Check out his interview with Kay yesterday:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/...ive?id=2693958

Among other things, he talks about how he wishes he could get the Jets to wear black jerseys, how he already has a genuine hatred of the Patriots, and chooses to describe next year's Jets defense as "Violent." All the while he comes across as funny, intelligent, and genuine.

Everyone who frequents this thread needs to listen to this interview. It will get you more amped for a Jets season than anything in recent memory.

I missed the part where he talked about already hating the Pats (), so I'm going to have to re-listen. But I've loved what I've heard from Scott so far. Rex Ryan's interview was excellent again as well.

Re: The Official 2009 New York Jets Thread

For those of that are lazy, here are some highlights:

On what the Jets defense is going to be like next year with him on it in 2009:

"Guys keep asking me this question and I keep giving them the same answer:

It's going to be extremly violent.

That's pretty much the best way I can say it. It's going to be violent, it's going to be physical, it's going to be suffocating, and the goal is trying to beat people into submission. You beat them to where it's just not worth it to finish the game. It's just not worth it to fight for that extra yard because you know if you stay up long enough you're going to get hit repeatedly by all the bullets coming once we swarm to the ball."

On what he thought about the Jets defense when he was in Baltimore:

"We've always talked about, in Baltimore, those DBs that they had, you know - Revis and Rhodes. We always talked about 'hey man, they got a young corner over in New York that's a BEAST'...we were really involved in watching Jenkins and the manchild he is."

"I don't think it's too far to say we have a real chance to be #1 next year, I not too scared to put it out there. And I know with that comes bulletin board material, but who cares? Bring it on."

On Vernon Gholston, and if he's willing to take him under his wing and get him to be a player:

"Oh, he's GOING to be a player. We're going to get it out of him or we're going to both die trying. He has all the tools, God blessed him with tremendous ability, and when God blessed you that much it's your obligation to show it to the world, because he gave it to you to be a blessing to the fans. You know, we're entertainers, so we're going to come out and put a great show on, but I have an added incentive being that we're both from Detroit, MI, we're both from that league - our high schools play against each other, and we have a responsibility to represent for our neighborhood in Detroit. And I'm telling you, he's going to be a hell of a player."

On why Rex Ryan will be a good head coach:

"Like he likes to say, he has broad shoulders, and he's going to do what's best for this football team. He has a candid ability to come down to his soldiers. He's right there with you. You know, sometimes head coaches are facilitators, and they don't have the initmate relationships they have with their position coaches have with their team. We played in Baltimore to get Rex Ryan a coaching job. That was OUR mission statement to each other when the season started and he got passed over for the job. We said 'we're going to get Rex Ryan a head coaching job because we're going to be so ferocious that they aren't going to have any choice but for somebody to say 'hey - we want THAT in our city, and we want that on our team.' And we accomplished that because he has the ability to make his players care."

On suddenly getting a ton of money:

"For me I had to stop and realize. You know, when you see stuff floating on the ticker, and you see stuff on TV, that they're talking about ME. I'm watching like they're talking about someone else - it's almost like an out of body experience. If I could have written this story, I don't know that I could have put all this stuff in it. This is beyond my wildest imagination. At the end of the day in the back of my head I'm always an undrafted rookie free agent, and all I know how to do is work. All I know how to do is compete. All I know how to do is to never back down, because when you come in the league basically as a walk-on, that's what you have to do. It's either conquer or be conquered. So you know, I'm extremely grateful, and I'm ready to go to work, and I'm ready to write this next chapter in my career."

On the question of whether he went back to Baltimore to shop the offer:

"This was an urban legend...the reason the last year was added on to the deal was to help the salary cap issue. So when you see the spike in money, the spike in years, it's to help the salary cap - that's just the business of football, and that was done to help the football team. This was a done deal. When I put my word and my stamp on something, I mean it, and I live by it. And I'll die by my word."

On whether he's on board with hating the Patriots:

"If you guys were paying attention, I threw a flag a couple of years ago and got fined 25 grand on Monday night football, playing against the Patriots. So that's not hard to do AT ALL.

Kay: So you've got that in you already?

    "You. Don't. Understand."

Call me a blind optimist (I don't blame you) but I think Gholston breaks out this year.

I'm about to listen to that interview, but we signed Leonhard.

    http://blogs.nfl.com/category/adam-schefter/

Continuing to import help from Baltimore, the Jets reached agreement with Ravens free-agent safety Jim Leonhard on a three-year deal.

For a while Tuesday, there was a hangup in talks. Initially, it looked as if Leonhard would be headed to the Jets, then the Broncos stepped in. Leonhard ultimately went back to the Jets. He now joins Rex Ryan and Bart Scott with the New York Ravens.

I really like Leonhard. A lot. I liked him last year in Baltimore - he always seemed to be making heads up plays whenever I caught their games.

I only watched him in the playoffs, where he did impress me, but I love the move just because he'll be such a huge upgrade for us. If we could now get a pass rushing DE (I wonder if they consider moving Gholston back to DE - of course he'd still have to produce if he was moved there), we'd have the makings of an excellent defense.

I like the signings but we are still thin on the d line...if they don't find someone to spell Jenkins the D will be incomplete. We lack depth in this unit.

Agreed. A DE and a good backup DT should be next on the priority list.

Definitely. Jenkins all but disappeared towards the end of the season. Now that C.J. Mosely is apparently going to sign with Jacksonville, we really need a solid backup.

This has been eating at me for two days now: Why is there no talk at all about Cutler? It seems so obvious, no?

I've been thinking the same thing, Kevin. They must be REALLY high on Clemliff, or they don't think they can get Cutler without giving up a lot more than their first rounder.

As for Leonhard, I admittedly don't know jack sh!t about the guy, but I like what I've read, so I'm pleased..

I'd give up a lot in addition to the 1st rounder for Cutler, I think.

I can't see the Broncos giving up Cutler and not getting a QB back.

Big mistake if thats true. I cant believe they would go into the season with Ratliff/Clemens considering all the moves they are making.

Re: The Official 2009 New York Jets Thread

I want Cutler, but I don't think Denver is going to trade him. Plus, McDaniels probably doesn't want to annoy BB out of fear he'll make McDaniels' life miserable like he did to Mangini (or at the very least he doesn't want to trade him to another AFC team), which is why they were talking to teams like the Bucs and the Vikings.

If I were the Jets I'd probably give the Broncos almost whatever they want if they're REALLY willing to trade Cutler, though. He's that good.
