It looks like they got themselves a pretty good closer for a very short term so I say good for the Angels.

looks like a good deal, considering they lost a top closer and had no other outside options

    Good signing for them.

Milwaukee's offseason isn't going so well.

It's actually 2/17.5 with a vesting option for a third year according to Olney. K-Rod's was 3/37.

Great signing by Arte Moreno and the Angels.

Hmm, I thought they would have Arredondo close but this works too. I'd actually feel better with the Yankees facing Fuentes late in the game than I would Arredondo.

He wanted to sign there, it was only a matter of time.

Yeah, this one makes sense for the Angels.

At least we won't have to see the Angel closer exploding in orgasm on the mound. Hopefully we won't be seeing him anywhere near the mound.

Meh, I hope he fails miserably.

I'm tired of these guys being a thorn on our side.

OK signing for them. I like that kid Arredondo, and I could see Fuentes falling apart over there. I don't have much basis for that, just a hunch. I think the Mets should have sprung for him on top of Putz and K-Rod. Rays could've used him too, maybe most of all.

It wasn't a great signing; it was a necessary signing after losing their top 2 players to NY teams.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

Great signing for the Angels...I liked Fuentes better then K-Rod personally.

The best part is that the commitment is only 2 years - if the Angels exercise the option, it means Fuentes out-performed the contract.

You mean you like Fuentes better than K-Rod as a fit for the Angels or in general? If I had to pick one or the other, I'm taking K-Rod.

I think over the life of their respective contracts Fuentes will outperform K-Rod.

I believe this is a case of hype winning out over baseball statistics and because K-Rod is better known, he is automatically assumed to be the safer and better option.

K-Rod is an injury waiting to happen, has allegedly lost 2 mph off his fastball and stopped throwing his slider as much last year (a sign of an arm injury).

K-Rod's peripheral numbers are way lower then 2 or 3 years ago signifying an abnormal amount of luck the last year or two. K-Rod's K/9 has dipped in each of the last 4 years (although it hasn't dipped significantly until last year). While his BB/9 has risen to 4.5 per 9 innings. During this time period his WHIP has raised also from a low of .99 and 1.00 in 2004 and 2005 respectively to 1.29 in 2008.

Fuentes on the other hand has had relatively volatile peripherals, and has had to pitch in Coors Field for the last 7 years, likely deflating strikeout rates. His K/9 rates have fluctuated in the last 4 years ranging from a low of 8.2 in 2007 to a high 11.8 in 2008. However, his walk rates have dipped each year in the last 4, dipping to 3.2 per 9 innings last year. Fuentes WHIP has also dipped the last 4 years, to a low of 1.10 in 2008.

If I had to put the odds of who would perform better over the next 3 years, I'd probably favor Fuentes 55-45. Fuentes is trending upwards, whereas K-Rod is trending downwards. Although there is no doubt that K-Rod has better stuff then Fuentes, I would be leery of the way his numbers are trending, especially with the whispers of his possible arm injury. All of this is not even factoring in the fact that the contract that Fuentes signed for is nearly half of what K-Rod signed for (and I think the Mets signed him for a discount).

So yes, if I had to choose one of them for their current contracts, I would take Fuentes without a doubt.

The Yankee price would have been 4/39

Well that's all reasonable enough, but I don't necessarily agree. Fuentes is 32, K-Rod is 26. If it's true that K-Rod's drop in velocity was actually from an ankle injury, I would expect his velocity to go back up after he recovers. There may not be anything wrong with his arm at all. He's been using those mechanics for years with good success, even though he's a 1-inning pitcher. Fuentes has gotten better since becoming a closer. His numbers are consistently good as well, but his career hasn't been as good obviously. If Fuentes can continue what he's done the past 4 seasons, we can say he's the better value for his contract. But if I had to choose one or the other to pitch an inning and finish the game, I'd go with K-Rod.
