    Yankees Books gift ideas

I'm torn between giving my father one of the All-Star Game programs I got and selling it on eBay and buying him something else with the $. There is also a really nice book on the Stadium out this year, "Yankee Stadium: A Tribute" that I was thinking about, too.

I did review four baseball books from 2008 for Why I Like Baseball, including "The Greatest Game," which is about the 1978 "Bucky Dent" playoff game (here: http://www.whyilikebaseball.com/?p=81) but I think my brother beat me to it and got him that for Father's Day already! I really had fun reading that book -- it's like the story of '78 can just be told over and over like some folktale or myth that gets better every time we hear it.

Ideas? Any good books from this year that I missed? Money's been tight so I've been trying NOT to go into the bookstore or look at Amazon for months now...

I just finished the "Luckiest Man" book on Lou Gehrig- it was very good. The definitive biography on Gehrig in my opinion, as the only other serious Gehrig biography was Ray Robinson's "The Iron Horse."

One book that I really want to get is the new book on Ed Barrow, who was the architect of so many championship Yankee teams. Of course, since I haven't read it I am unable to give you the thumbs up but it seemed like an interesting read.

Just a few ideas. Good luck.

Oooh, yes, I really want to read the book on Barrow. He was with the Red Sox before he came to the Yankees and some credit him as the man who changed Ruth from a pitcher to an everyday player to get his bat in the lineup. When he moved to the Yankees, the real raiding of Boston's talent began in earnest. It might not be my dad's kind of read, but I am going to add it to my own wish list...!

I'd like to read the one on Barrow too.

There are many other titles mentioned/reviewed in this thread. Should give you some ideas.

Oh, I just realized I have another one on my "to read" shelf, too. The one about Mike Mussina and Tom Glavine, Painting the Black. I just haven't had the time to read it yet!

It's actually called "Living on the Black: Two Pitchers, Two Teams, One Season to Remember" ... I'm about halfway through it and I'm enjoying it immensely.

"The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty: The Game, The Team and the Cost of Greatness" by Buster Olney is a good one ... painful, but good.

As mentioned above "The Greatest Game" is another good one ... I particually liked it since I love Thurman and that era.

By far my favorite that I've read recently, though, is "Birth of a Dynasty: Behind the Pinstripes with the 1996 Yankees" by Joel Sherman. I even got my Dad a copy for Father's Day.

And any of the bazillion retrospectives of Yankee Stadium would be a good bet I would think.

I am in the middle of reading this. People associate Barrow specifically with the Yankees. He really accomplished a lot before joining the Yanks.

"Yankees Century: 100 Years of New York Yankees baseball" by Glenn Stout is a great read. It's a long book, with a very detailed history from the beginning of the franchise up to the 2001 WS. Highly recommended.

Yogi's most recent book, You Can Observe A Lot By Watching: What I've Learned About Teamwork From the Yankees and Life released in May, is a quick, easy and enjoyable read. Kaplan did a very good job in working with Yogi; you can "hear" him speaking as you read the book.

Don't forget Bobby Murcer's book, "Yankee for Life". That was a very good read too.

My all-time favorite is Taking on the Yankees - Winning and Losing in the Business of Baseball by Henry D. Fetter.

It's an absolutely fascinating book that not only deals with the team's success from 1903 through 2003, but it also covers a lot of stuff concerning behind the scene dealings with the Giants and Dodgers. A truly outstanding book.

Well, I tried 3 different stores here in the Boston area trying to get the Barrow book today, and struck out, but all three when I asked about it were like "huh, looks like we never even ordered it... but from this description it really looks like we ought to have gotten it." So now they've all ordered a copy and I'll get it at one of them on Monday. :-)

"Fifty Greatest Yankee Games" is a good one. You might want to check it out.

    Oh, wait.

I really hope an incredible world series win comes our way soon so I have an excuse to overhaul the book and try to get the publisher to do a new edition... *crosses fingers*

Tip: There are a number of good suggestions throughout the "Good Yankees Books" forum, also on "Yankees: Out of Play."
