Thread: playoff shot?

    playoff shot?

Although it is not impossible, it is looking very bleak. This year - it will probably take at least 93 wins to have a shot at the wildcard. For the Yankees to have this shot , they will need to go 27 and 11 the rest of the way.

The bad news is that the Yankees have not gone 27-11 in the last 38 games during the recent 13 year playoff appearance streak.

The good news is that they have gone 26-12 twice - so there is a liitle bit of hope.

    Solution - "just win baby!"

I like the playoffs as much as I like pancakes. I haven't had pancakes in a long time, and it's going to be even longer before I get to see the Yankees in the playoffs again.

    Re: playoff shot?

It all depends on what the Sox/Yanks do against the Rays

    Yankees go 5-1 vs Rays
    Sox go 5-1 vs Rays

That's an 8 game loss column swing with plenty of games outside of those. Or they could hope the Rays beat the Sox, and then take care of the Sox

it depends how healthy we get. Matsui is supposed to be back soon, and not that i would ever cound on carl pavano but either he or hughes will be as well. If we can hold it together now and then down the home stretch get joba and wang back... if we make the playoffs we could be trouble. Ponson has been solid. Wang Moose Joba Petite Ponson/Hughes/Pavano, and then add matsui back into the lineup. Just gota start winning on the road!

That's only an 8 game swing if the Yankees also go 5-1 during the games they play while the Sox are going 5-1 against the Rays.

5-1 is a pretty tall order given how this team has looked against Tampa this year.

All they can do is play their own games, look alive, start looking like a major league offense, and hopefully 25-28 wins will be enough.

Wang aint coming back this year. We need Joba Hughes Pavano whoever to come

back and pitch SOLID baseball for 6 weeks. if they can do that and this lineup starts

to hit consistently, we're goin all in. Joba Vs. Beckett game 1 ALCS ...

Its my dream as well, and only cause i know Chamberlain can hand Beckett his arse

again, and i love him for that. I'd seriously go apes**t if this team, after all its been

through in 2008 can get to this afformentioned game.

    Re: playoff shot?

if our offense can start producing like they did last season, we can make it. however i am not very confident in that happening. it will be interesting to see how our lineup does against Burnett and Halladay- are they just going to roll over like they usually do against Toronto's two best, or are they going to bring it? let's see.

There are no shortage of "ifs" involved, but it's doable. They play the teams they are chasing. At this point though WC is our best bet, so I'm hoping for a rout of the Sox by the Yanks and the Rays. I think we can catch the other teams in the WC hunt.

    5-1 against the Rays
How's that going to happen ?

Take 5 out of 6 against the Sox

This team just showed its true colors against Kansas City.
There is no life in this team. There is no urgency. Look at all those
opportunities we wasted against the Royals in the first two games.
That's been the story of this season. Along with injuries, we've had wasted
    opportunities all year long.

We just don't have the players to get it done this year. Maybe next year.

We have the players to get it done but they just haven't been getting it done. The playoffs are still a possibility but an unlikelyhood. We have underperformed all year with no signs of our coming out of it.

It's a long shot for sure but it's still a shot. They are going to have to play out of their heads and start taking advantage of every opportunity they get in each game they play. It's possible.

    Re: playoff shot?

The pitching, considering the injuries, has been passable. 7th in ERA and WHIP for the AL isn't terrible (ain't great either). I feel like this squad would be 4th or 5th with Wang and Joba back.

The offense needs to be more consistent. We have too many overpriced veterans who are underperforming. Our lineup is thin right now and badly needs improvement. All you need to do is get past 3, 4, and 5 and you're good as an opposing pitcher. With the #3 OBP in the AL we should be scoring more runs...of course, the problem is their hitting with RISP.

This is simplistic. If the Yanks took 5/6 from the Sox, they would still be 1.5 behind. The Sox have 21 home games left to our 16.

We have a West Coast trip, they don't. We have 3 more against LAA, they don't.

We need to go on an absolute tear just to tie them.

as much as I'd like to wish it into being, I just don't see this team putting it together long enough to make the playoffs. and if by some miracle they do, will they have enough in the tank to even make it out of the ALDS?

if the yanks don't make it, i want to see min get the WC and tampa the division.

That they can keep up. They'll fade because they are awful on the road and they have 15-game road trip coming up...

Look, this team has sent me on an emotional rollercoaster this season. The post-ASB madness was the final straw, and I refuse to get my hopes up after yet another isolated offensive explosion. Given how they've played for most of the season and looking at their standings in either playoff race, it looks incredibly dire if not over. So mathematically, yes--they have a playoff shot. But it would require executing a run that they have yet to experience in 2008.

I don't believe they can do it, but I would love to eat lots of crow...and vulture and ostrich and any bird available.

I just don't think we've played well enough this season to miraculously turn it around now. If the hitters weren't relaxed after the all star break and their one long winning streak, they will be in a worse position now, and Girardi is as tense as any of them - in the last Joe Girardi show, Ii thought he was going to start yelling at Michael Kay! It is unbearably sad to think of no postseason baseball in Yankee Stadium in the last year of the stadium.

It is truly saddening how this season might turn out. We are the Sawx - circa 2006.
