One more point on Cole, if you listen to certain posters, you would believe that Cole not going here was the worst decision ever. Something to keep in mind, Tampa who needed a catcher, for financial reasons, decided not to draft Buster Posey, and instead went for Tim Beckham. If you put Posey on that team, they would be World Series favorites this year, and if they don't win in the next five years, that one decision could be the one they will live to regret.

hs pitchers are hs pitchers. risky and upside. it's just that in theory the yankees can absorb the risks long term.

The easiest way to achieve success, for a small market team, is to be willing to take chances, and draft guys that have a higher upside and a higher risk, and quite often a pricetag. This is what the Royals, Pirates & Jays are doing. Teams like the Mets & Cubs who will not use their market strength, and spend money, are putting themselves right behind the eight ball.

well yea, for teams who are willing to "eat" fail years and rebuild, upside is pretty much the only way to go. but upside is still the better strategy for teams like the yankees who can absorb the volatility of risky bets.

the way baseball handles club control of prospects is a relic of the plantation era. i am sorta of hoping the pa would do something about it.

Most would consider AA and AAA the upper levels of the minors and most would consider Romine's performance this year in AA a success.

It is nothing like a "Plantation Era". Minor Leagues serve a very useful purpose as far as player development is concerned (The NFL & NBA don't have that problem because the Colleges do that for them). Players are not slaves, they do not have to sign with a team. They can choose to attend college (Note the word choose, it means to elect to do something, not be forced into it). For example: Robert Segedin probably will not sign with the Yankees. It makes sense perfect sense for him not to, because he attends an excellent Academic University (Tulane), and he would either have to switch positions, or be stuck behind Alex Rodriguez at 3rd if he would sign. Either condition would require a major sacrifice on his end, so he likely won't.

they are paid peanuts and are essentially owned by the teams.

Then I would disagree with most. Dudes hitting .270 with a .338 OBP and a SLG% barely over .400. I'm not saying that he's terrible or that he isn't a good prospect, but its a regression and even in that park those aren't special numbers.
