Jon Lieber - would the Cubs deal him?

What about Jon Lieber as an option? He's signed only though this year and doesn't seem to have a place in the Cubs pen or rotation right now. Though with Wood out they may not want to deal pitching.

He's likely to give about league average innings and would be an upgrade over both Ponson or Rasner.

The Cubs probably wouldn't be asking too much for him but you never know.

If the price was right, I'd like to see them at least explore him as an option.

Leiber is a definite no go.

The thought of Rasner and/or Ponson getting possibly 10 more starts between them makes me want to vomit.

Lieber isn't a savior but he doesn't cost $10.5M next year like Washburn and he's just as likely to give us similar performance as Washburn would this year in my opinion.

If the prospect cost is small, I'd be all for re-acquiring Lieber.

I don't go there for anything. I'd take my chances on Kennedy/Hughes/whoever

I mean he's a "no go" from a Yankee perspective.

I agree with Yankee Tripper. If he can be had for a song then I'd slot him over Ponson and Rasner every day of the week. My only concern would be that he hasn't been starting for the Cubs, so could his arm hold up. As cavalier as his 1.37 WHIP is, I'll take it over Ponson's 1.85 WHIP any time.

    Lieber, Ponson or Rasner?

Would I rather be shot, stabbed, or thrown in front of a moving car?

Guys don't act like Lieber was freaking Kevin Brown. This guy helped us out big time. OP is bringing up valid. I don't much about Lieber this year but I just wanted to defend OP.

Lieber belongs to the group of pitchers (like Al Leiter and Dan Giese) who should never, never be acquired by the Yankees, because fans cannot learn to spell their names correctly.

Pettitte, also, sadly belongs in this group, which is why he was obliged to leave the Yankees for a three-year exile. He was allowed back in because it's only a consonant problem and does not involve the vowels in his name.

Lumping Lieber with those guys is comical.

Lieber is no great shakes but he's steady. He puts up and ERA+ of 95 - 110 every year like clockwork and logs innings whne healthy. He's been very good for Chicago in limited duty this year. His ERA is better than his WHIP of 1.36 but that's largely due to the fact he has 26:5 K:BB ratio.

In 2004 he was far and away our best pitcher down the stretch going 5-0 in September. If he had gotten a borderline strike call on Jason Varetik on a 2-2 pitch in game 6, it's inning over instead of Tek extending the inning on single on the next pitch which lead to Bellhorn's 3-run HR 2 batters later and maybe Lieber is remembered a bit differently but what are you gonna do.

I stand corrected on Lieber's effectiveness when we had him before. That being said, I wouldn't be running out trying to get him.

The Cubs would hold him ransom, and he's not getting traded anyway. First of all, he's on the DL so he can't be traded, but even when healthy, he's gotta be the better option over Jason Marquis as their fifth starter.

Yankee fans don't like the German ones.

BTW, Giese mispronounces his own name... it should be "geez-uh," not "guys."
I'm not putting my name on the line for something that doesn't work.
