    Lance Berkman

With Houston as far out of the NL Central as possible and Berkman owed some change the next 2 years, any chance Houston looks to move him? I'm bored.

    Lance Berkman 1b-of
    6 years/$85M (2005-2010), plus $15M 2011 club option
    • 05:$10.5M, 06-10:$14.5M/year, 11:$15M club option ($2M buyout)
    • full no-trade clause
    • Berkman to donate $100,000/year to club charity
    • MVP award bonus:
      • $0.5M for 1st place in voting
      • $0.35M for 2nd place in voting
      • $0.25M for 3rd place in voting
    • signed extension 3/05, replacing 1 year/$10.5M contract for 2005
    • avoided arbitration 1/05 ($11M-$10M)
    • 3 years/$10.5M (2002-04)
      • 02:$0.5M, 03:$3.5M, 04:$6.5M
      • award bonus: $25,000 for All Star selection
    • drafted 1997 (1-16), $1M signing bonus

Which is why, among other reasons, the Astros won't trade him.

    Josh Hamilton blinded us.

I don't think there's any chance at landing Berkman.

He's having a freaky good year. What's up with the sudden SB's, too?

Anyway - doubtful the 'Stros trade him. This is a team that seems to be loyal to its players (e.g. Biggio) and he is a stud with a reasonable deal to boot.

That said, he is 32 and the 'Stros need to rebuild. Hmmmm... It would take a massive package though, probably more than a single player is worth.

We need to not look at anyone over 30, with extremely rare exception. Learn from your mistakes. Players sharply decline both in performance and health after ~32. Statistically (PEDs aside), players are plateauing and then downhill from about 27 or 28. There are some freaks (Mo, Posada, etc) but they are the very rare exception to the rule.

We don't need to catch the tail end of anything. The idea is buy something LOW, that will improve. Buying someone that has nowhere to go but down while they they are at or near their peak is a poor choice we make too frequently. We've been burned so bad with aging free agent veterans that we're scared to pick up a 27 year old Cy Young winner.
A fool and his money can throw one heck of a party!

They traded for Tejada this off-season. They are not in rebuilding mode. I'm not aware of what their farm system is like right now, but they've underperformed this year. They've got some young talent in Pence, Towles, Wandy Rodriguez, etc., but the Cubs and Brewers are keeping them towards the bottom (not to mention the Cardinals are overachieving once again).

Maybe they would trade Oswalt, but they would do well to be buyers in the off-season, I think. I'd target Ben Sheets if I were them and depend on Michael Bourn relearning how to hit because he has terrific speed.
