Re: Interesting Football News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread

    Very sad news.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier, shot while sitting in a car outside an apartment complex earlier this month, is paralyzed below the waist and his left leg was amputated, his doctor said Monday.

He should fit in with the other upstanding citizens such as Chris Henry.

Sounds to me like Carson Palmer will be the newest member of the TJS club for 2008. Say "hi" to Billy Wagner!

Seriously, like Wagner, Palmer shouldn't try to play with a bum elbow on a Cincy team going nowhere. Delhomme had it last year and seems to have zero ill effects in terms of QB's.

There will probably be more. I don't think Marinelli, Childress, Lewis, and Herm Edwards are nice and cozy.

Being a SF Bay Area native, Dr. John York is the problem for the 49ers.

Dr. York and Denise DeBartolo-York don't know what they're doing. They better sell the team and get an owner that really knows football that can duplicate the success Eddie DeBartolo Jr. had.

The 49ers have talent and a nice coaching staff, but ownership is the problem.

Mike Nolan is a great football mind in a tough situation. Mike Singletary gets his chance.

    CHFF: Monday Morning Hangover

    Cleveland 23, Jacksonville 17
San Fran's Vernon Davis is hardly the only highly touted young tight end who has failed to help his team. In fact, the Browns might be wise to pull a Mike Singletary and boot Kellen Winslow Jr right out of Cleveland.

The Browns are 2-0 when Winslow sits and 1-4 when Winslow plays. They’ve also seen a huge increase in offensive productivity this year without Winslow.

Browns with Winslow -- 11.4 PPG, 215.8 YPG, 187.0 pass YPG
Browns without Winslow -- 29.0 PPG, 390.5 total YPG, 273.0 pass YPG

Why they hired Cottrell is beyond me. He's failed in Minny, Jets, and now SD. Moreover, his philosophy is based on emphasizing pass coverage without blitzing. The SD defense was built on the blitz. Wrong coach, bad resume. That they hired him in the first place doesn't speak well of the Chargers organization.

With a talented young secondary, the Chargers rank 27th in Defensive Passer Rating. Wow.

Their schedule gets easier as I see them winning 4 of their next 5 games.

Sorry, I miised your post till now. I have not understood a lot of the Chargers' decisions in the past. We'll now get to see what happens without Teddy's influence. Rivera wants to make an impression and I think we'll be seeing a lot of aggressive defense from here on out. I had them going 6-2 after the bye...hope I'm right!

The guys we're missing are on-the-mend and the bye couldn't have come at a better time!

    Denver....please keep up your suckitude!

So how much did the refs cost betters and fantasy players a lot of money this Sunday with that Pittsburgh debacle?

That's all I was thinking about at the end. Either way there were going to be some real unhappy people -- tough to lose a bet on an absolutely meaningless score.

And when the ref seemingly doesn't know the rulebook.

Yeah, like I said either way there would be unhappy people. I guess I don't have much sympathy for the people who lost since their win that was negated by the refs would have been so fluky. But I guess I really wouldn't have sympathy for either side because those kinds of things are part of betting even if they're unexpected.

    $32M...

I can't believe the entire ref crew is not under investigation from the NFL. Not only were the Steelers out-penalized 13-1, but then they had those 7 points taken off the board at the end of the game??

Turns out that ref was the same guy who screwed the Giants out of a playoff in in San Fran in 2002. He was then the back judge that said the lineman wasn't an eligible receiver after they screwed up the FG and Bryant passed it down field for an apparent 1st down.

    Not surprised.

Before Week One Seahawks-Pats looked like a good game. It's a terrible game now.

Yes! I hate night games. I hope the Pats-Cardinals game stays right where it is too, I don't feel like going to another late December night game with work the next day.
