    Scary day for me

I took my two dogs for an hour long walk and with the temperature being 82 degrees. The older dog (which isn't in the best of shape) had trouble making it home and I had to stop at a gas station and a Burger King in order to get them water. The older one, Jensen, was panting like I had never seen before and I was afraid she was going to have a heart attack since she is out of shape and going on 9 years old. So as I neared my way home there were a huge set of stairs I had to climb with the dogs. The younger one, which was fine to walk the rest of the way wouldn't cooperate going up the stairs so I had to pick him up and take him to the top. Meanwhile, Jensen is trying to climb the stairs as she's panting her ass off. I had to run back down and grab her and bring her to the top. After that, I noticed her tounge was starting to turn a purplish-blue colour and I started getting extremely worried. We made it to the next street over which was about 2 mins from my house and I had to ask someone outside if they could be kind enough to bring out some water for them since I was afraid I wouldn't make it home with them. So, they did and they were really nice about it and even held onto them while I ran home and got my car to bring over and rescue them home.

I learned a valuable lesson today in how far you should take an out of shape dog in hot summer weather and almost lost one of my dogs because of it.

I don't know if anyone else has ever had an experience like this. I hope not because it was definitely one of the scariest things that has ever happened to me.

Right now, she is still panting really bad but it's getting better and I have a huge bowl of water for her.... I just hope she is fine tonight because I really put a number on her.

Definitely scary. I saw something similar happen to a 12-yr old dog who wanted to keep up with 3 year old dogs running around in the woods all afternoon. It's best to take them out early in the morning or later in the day when it's less oppressive.

Water is good, and if you see vomiting or diarrhea, don't hesitate to call your vet for advice.

Glad the dogs are ok. I guess an hour in the heat was just too much esp if they are out of shape. Good thing you saw the signs and gave them what they needed.

Time to relax and take a deep breath. You sound really stressed. If you're old enough, have a drink.

In about a year (Canada) I will have that drink, haha.

She is sitting in the bathroom where there is cold tile right now and her panting has reduced a lot. Looks as if she is getting better.

Oh good. Poor thing. I hope you're staying home tonight so you can keep an eye on her.

She is a cockapoo. Same with the other one. Funny thing, the other one had a Yankee's collar and leash on so maybe that's why he was able to make it all the way.

    Re: Scary day for me

That IS scary... I'm sure you'll do things differently next time. I always bring along a bottle of water for the dog when I take him out for either a long walk or even a short walk in warmer weather.

One thing that might help your pup feel a little better tonight is to soak a bath towel and then wring all the excess water out. You can put the towel on his belly to cool him down. My golden retriever loves it on a warm day. The other thing you might want to do on a warm day is to wet him down before a walk.

And as you learned, an hour walk is too long for an overweight dog. They need to build up to it, just like an out of shape person would.

Keep in mind your pup is probably going to be sore tomorrow. A little gentle massage around his hips and elbow joints can help to relieve the soreness. Plus then he'll know you're REALLY sorry!

Our dog (a Golden Retriever) gets hot in the middle of winter so we know she'd never make it on a walk during the summertime. I usually take her out in the mornings when it's still semi-cool. If we do take her during the afternoon, we bring along a water bottle and make the walk a short one - maybe two blocks. I'll pour the water into my hand for her to take a drink. Something our Vet told us is to not give her ice cold water after she gets too hot. I guess it does more harm than good.

That's why it's so important to keep your dog at a healthy weight and in shape (of you can)

Glad it all turned out well for you, I would have freaked.

My dog is very heat sensitive, as well. I hose him down before walks and try to only walk him early morning and later in the evening when it's too hot.
They do make cooling bandanas and vests for dogs - you may want to give that a try, as well.
Ollie has a Cooling Bandana that I soak in water and pop in the fridge and then velcro it on him when we go out, as well.

Poor puppy! I hope he's OK today. I guess he's pretty furry too, so that doesn't help with the heat! I have to be careful with my big girl, she's not that young and she's a Rottie/Lab mix, so she's pretty furry (and dark fur, which holds the heat), but she's smart enough to want to do her business and go home immediately when it's really hot out.

Todd - I never thought of MM as a Golden Retriever, for some reason I pictured her as smaller and curly haired (don't ask me why!)

    Very good news!

Or you could just go to Europe and not have to wait at all.
