Someone said Bud Selig grimaced when the Yanks took Cole in round 1, and Gammons looked like he was gonna cry. Is this true? If so, hilarious!

    From Olney:

    • The Diamondbacks picked the son of colleague Mark Schlereth, and Daniel Schlereth might be in the big leagues by September. Heard this: If Schlereth had fallen a little in the draft, to the Yankees, they fully intended to him. As it turned out, the Yankees were pleasantly surprised to have an opportunity to land the pitcher they grabbed, Gerrit Cole.

I didn't notice that. Though someone said Gammons looked upset moments after Giambi hit the walkoff.

I would be satisfied if we got any of: Marquis, Meyer, Gray, Hunter, Martinez

NY_GOLDENARMS - can you continually edit your first post as picks are made in order to show everyone we got today?

Who are some projectable signability cases that we could get our hands on today? Meyer, Gray . . .

This is true, I hadn't even heard of Chris Smith until this morning when I was reviewing our pick. Now I couldn't think of anything better than Austin Jackson and Chris Smith patrolling the left side of the OF at the new stadium.

Keep an eye on rounds 8-10. That seems to be where the Yanks are most comfortable tweeking the commish.

    Re: 2008 Draft Thread - Day 2

    Riveraveblues.com:

Lane Meyer of NoMaas fame dug up some good info on 6th rounder Brett Marshall. Brett’s father Eddie said it’ll take around $1M to sign his son away from Rice, and to that I say: ................ the heck dad, pay your own mortgage! Seriously though, the Yanks wouldn’t have taken the kid this high if they didn’t have the intention of signing him.
I’m a pitching guy for whatever reason, I’ve always tended to gravitate towards the guys on the mound more than the guys in the box, especially high schoolers. That said, there’s some great pitching left available, led by Pepperdine RHP Brett Hunter, prep RHP’s Alex Meyer & Danny Webb, and prep LHP’s Nick Maronde & Brett Mooneyham. All five are signability guys at this point, and I want Maronde more than any of the other three. Taking him right out of the chute in the 7th round would already be a steal.
The best hitters left on the board are Pepperdine LF/DH Eric Thames, and prep 3B’s Zach Cox and Harold Martinez. Thames missed the end of the season with a quad injury, Cox is a signability guy at this point, and Martinez just had a terrible draft year. Any of the three is a coup regardless of where they are drafted at this point.

Kyle Long is so raw that I don't think there was any chance of him ever going in the first 5 rounds.

I'd love to see them take him, though. Fun pick.

44 rounds today. For those who haven't followed it before, as the draft wears on some teams drop out and pass on the rest of their picks.

Anyone know what the record for most players drafted and signed in one draft by a given team?

Maronde is going to take some serious cash to sign away from Florida at this point. If the Yanks take him to start the day, they'd better be ready to shell it out.

What the Yanks did last year with some of the pitchers was draft them, then let them pitch in a league from June through July or so before making a decision on whether or not to sign them.
