Question about ARod's homer that wasn't..

Since instant replay isn't going to happen anytime soon, why don't the Yankees simply paint that wall that ARod's homer hit either dark blue or black? I didn't hear any of the announcers make that recommendation last night. How do the rest of you feel about this suggestion?

    What difference would that make?

Hopefully, in the future if any other balls are hit in that area the umps will be better able to determine if it is a homer. Also, I would do the same for any other areas in the outfield that could cause the same problem in the future.

Why don't I remember those yellow stairs there in the past?

For real. I swear I've never seen those before, and I dunno how that's possible.

(They must be as mysterious as the foul pole.)

It's a brick yellow wall, wouldn't the ball have some kind of yellow scuff mark on it? Did the umps check the ball?

I don't think there's much you could do to the wall short of putting a fresh coat of paint on the wall every inning. Maybe they could put a medal plate on the wall so when the ball hits it, it makes a distinct sound. In any case, I think that's the first time a ball's hit that area of Yankee stadium, it may never happen again. Hopefully they're taking notes and use measures to prevent this in the new stadium.

The lower portion of the foul pole Delgado hit was black, wasn't it?

I remember the stairs being there, I just don't think they were painted yellow all this time. Why do I think they might have been white or gray before?

If those stairs were blue, it would increase the optical illusion because the stairs would look like an extension of the fence.

Clearly, the solution is to coat the entire thing in stick-um.

That bal should have had some sort of yellow mark on it. I caught a BP ball that had hit off the foul pole and it was yellow all over.

This should not even be difficult. It either hit the "hard" stairway, or the "soft" padded wall. Since the ball caromed hard it's obvious it hit the stairway. An impact into the soft padding would be clearly obvious with the padding deflection from the impact of the ball.

I don't remember them either...and I'm usually sitting in right field line and have a good look over there.

Those stairs aren't that old, but they were at least there last year, maybe before that too.

On the original play on tv I didn't notice it hit them, so I don't blame the umpires too much. But it's just an example of why there needs to be replay, at least on homerun balls.

It's weird how so many haven't noticed those yellow stairs before. They have been there for a long time now.

Coat it in talc. Then if the ball hits it there will be a little puff of white dust.

Those stairs have only been there for about 5 or 6 years. I noticed that for last night's game a chain link fence was added to deaden the ball if it hits the stairs again.

Re: Question about ARod's homer that wasn't..

Two comments: Michael Kay said that the umps did look at the ball and found no yellow marks on it. Secondly, last night they showed the wall with a mesh fence of some sort covering that area . I guess that'll make it easier for umps to determine homers in the future.

I could be wrong, but I thought I saw new black netting in front of the yellow stairs last night.
