The Official Alberto Gonzalez Performance Thread

I thought he deserves a thread. What a great AB against Dice K tonight, working the AB for an rbi single.

He's started off hot, and I'm very happy about that, but I'm not sure he's going to keep this up for too long. I think he'll be a decent backup in the future, but the sooner we get Jeter back, the better.

Great AB against DiceK tonight and he definitely has a good glove at short, just needs to keep working on the bat.

It may be time to cut our losses with Betemit and see what we can get for him. In his small sample size, Gonzo has shown more at the plate and in the field than Betemit has shown us since he arrived.

I would like that he stays on the team. He has a great glove and has been hitting great so far.

Send back Betemit for Scott Proctor. He needs to get away from Torre again.

Defense very rarely goes into a slump. And he is clearly the best defensive infielder (probably at all three positions) on the club. Since he doesn't seem to be overmatched at the plate, IMO he's a significantly better option for this club than Betemit. If the team was a soft-hitting team it would be closer. But Betemit's advantage (that he's a better offensive player) isn't enough to overshadow Gonzalez' strengths. When Betemit plays, he is usually replacing someone who is better than him offensively as well as defensively. When Gonzalez plays, he is improving the defense over his replacement. I can live with the offensive shortcomings from my backup infielder. If you keep Duncan, the extra bat exists on the bench still.

He's a perfect fit for the bench (right now)

    He's also probably the fastest.

Let AG play 3B until A-Rod gets back. Ensberg lost all his power once he got off the juice, Wilson is DL'd.

It is interesting to see how someone performs when they know how important every AB is to their future as a player. We've got too many guys on the team who are all too aware that they will be multi-millionaires for many years to come regardless of how they perform.

Re: The Official Alberto Gonzalez Performance Thread

I really like the looks of this young player, both fielding wise and hitting wise as well. I think Ensberg is going to get released pretty soon. He's not much of a fielder and if you notice, he doesn't have his bat cocked and ready to hit. He leaves it on his shoulder like a pitcher would hit and as a result, he misses a lot of pitches. DFA him.

I don't care all that much for Betemit either. Gonzalez is the best of them in the field, plus he has speed to spare. Every hit he gets is a bonus just like Chad Moeller plays great defense and gives us some hits for good measure. This is what I like so much about Girardi over Torre. Girardi will try a combination of players and see who gives him what. Torre wouldn't give any young players a chance. He'd stay with the same lineup day after day and then take his usual nap on the bench. Do you think we'd even see Gonzalez if Torre was still here?

Girardi did this in Florida. He'd try player after player until he found the right players to get the job done. And with Willis and Cabrera the only stars on the team, he still almost got the Marlins into the playoffs.
Rocky Colavito was a colorful ballplayer that I would love to see in the Hall of Fame. He had a rifle of an arm and hit 374 lifetime home runs, none of them with a corked bat, either. He finished his career as a member of the New York Yankees and retired the same year as Mickey Mantle.

Alberto was sent down today to make room for Betemit.

I was expecting Ensberg to be the one so I am pretty disappointed.

Re: The Official Alberto Gonzalez Performance Thread

Count me in the disappointed crowd. Gonzalez deserves the spot, not Ensberg.

Re: The Official Alberto Gonzalez Performance Thread

Count me in that crowd as well. Gonzalez has shown that he is not going to be totally outmatched by MLB pitching, as has flashed the leather.

When will the Moberg experiment end? I think converseley he has shown that he's not going to suddenly regain his 30HR power and he's not nearly as versatile nor good with the glove as Alberto.

Re: The Official Alberto Gonzalez Performance Thread

I have to guess this: Gonzalez can be called up at any time, and isn't making much money. Ensberg on the other hand is making a bit more, and is gone for good if he's DFA'd. Neither of them would get much playing time in any case. I can see why they'd want to keep Ensberg around for as long as possible, even if I don't agree with it.

Same here. I thought Ensberg was worth a chance but it ain't happening with Mo. I know Girardi insisted on Ensberg being on the roster out of spring training but obviously he has no value now. To them team or trade wise.

Re: The Official Alberto Gonzalez Performance Thread

Ensberg seems to be one of those obvious juicers that isn't the same player without it. As of now, the guy can't hit. Saying that, I have no problem with Gonzalez going down. I like the idea of him hitting everyday in AAA in hopes he can improve his hitting. I don't have too much hope in that, but you never know.
