    Jesus Montero

I think he deserves his own thread. Post daily stats, season stats, scouting reports, any story’s, clips, pictures, quotes and just everything about him in this thread.

PP said he was the most impressive hitter at minor league camp. They also said he has great plate display and his bat is advance for such a young age, but most of us already knew that. I feel that he has an shot at becoming the top prospect in the organization after the season is done imo.

Hey, why did he strike out twice last night???

    Just kidding.

I don't know if he will be come the top prospect after this year. Tabata and Jackson, as well as Horne, may have something to say about that. But he can be special, especially power-wise.

We will just have to wait and see.

Is he the youngest in the SAL League?

He's about 8 months younger too.

We should have got both of them.

James Rowson called Montero "Monty" on PP. Maybe that's what everyone in the organization calls him? Do we have a nickname for him now?

I would have thought they would come up with a Spanish moniker.

El Torrito?? I have no knowledge of Spanish, but I believe I heard this somewhere. What does it mean - The Baby Bull??

He's killing right-hand pitching right now. But oddly is really struggling against leftys. Charleston play their home opener tomorrow by the way.

    Re: Jesus Montero

Slightly OT, but for anyone who wants a fantastic mini-vacation, Charleston is phenomenal. Old town charm, great beaches, great food. And the park is one of the absolute nicest in all of minor league baseball. Red brick facade, Ashley River over the right field wall, with a beautiful marsh backing up to The Citadel behind the first base line. Just gorgeous.

    Montero catching on with RiverDogs

    By Bill Henley (Contact)
    The Post and Courier
    Monday, April 7, 2008

In 2004, Venezuelan teenager Jesus Montero cheered when Boston won the World Series. Since then, the population of Red Sox nation has decreased by one.

Montero's loyalty shifted in 2006 when the New York Yankees showed they had enough faith in his potential that they were willing to invest a $2 million signing bonus on a 16-year-old catcher with top-end hitting power.

"I liked Boston before. Now, I like the Yankees all the time." he said.

Montero will make his Charleston debut today at 7:05 p.m. when he and the rest of the RiverDogs play their home opener at Riley Park against the Savannah Sand Gnats.

Geographically and developmentally, Montero has come a long way in a short amount of time.

"When I saw him at spring training a year ago, I didn't think he could be a catcher. He has really turned a corner," RiverDogs manager Torre Tyson said.

Last season, Montero hit .280 with three homers and 19 RBIs while playing for the rookie level Gulf Coast League Yankees. More importantly, he committed only one error in 33 games. His development, if not his confidence, took another step forward this spring when current Yankees backstop Jorge Posada took Montero under his wing.

"He helped me with catching, blocking, receiving — everything. It was more about the mental. He said to take it easy," Montero said.

With his 6-4, 225-pound frame, there has been some speculation that his body might be too large to handle the everyday rigors of the position and he could be moved to another spot. However, Tyson

said Montero's fastest path to the majors is as a catcher, and Montero said he's committed to playing there.

"I like the position. The little things are important. I want to stay there all my career," he said. "This year, I have to be better about everything. I worry a little more about catching. It's hard to call games some times.

"I have to learn more about calling games and my footwork."

Sharpening his defensive skills might be all that's required to earn a promotion through the organization. Montero's offensive abilities already have people excited. Baseball America rates him as the Yankees' sixth best prospect and the organization's best power hitter.

"The ball goes so far off the bat when he hits it," Tyson said. "The exciting thing is he doesn't chase breaking balls and that's one thing you don't usually see in a player at this level."

Montero said one of the more difficult parts about professional baseball is dealing with distance away from his home and family.

"I don't have family here and I miss them. It's a little hard for me, but I like it when they hear something good about me," he said. "I miss my family every day, but I'm here to play baseball and play with the Yankees. I just want to be better and better every day."

Funny how both Montero & Tabata went for the Red Sox as kids, but ended up with the Yankees.

Same with Hughes. I'd be a little angry with all these former Sox fans in our system if they weren't so good.

It's our slow and painful payback for 2004.

(note: yes, I do realise Hughes was drafted before the playoffs that year so don't try pointing that out )

I do think he's too big to have a long career as a catcher. Thank God he's in a league with the DH rule.

alot of latinos have that feeling because they had a bad rep. in Latin America now it's improving, guys like Jose Tabata and Jesus Montero, Robi Cano are good draws in Latin America.

The Philip Hughes thing is just plain weird.

By the way, Montero's hitting .412 with runners on so far this season.

I disagree, but he does have some strong opinions about Brett Gardner and Posada's defense.

(his defense is awful, but I don't know if i'd go as far as prefering molina in a vacuum)

The only thing he isn't doing right now is walking. But he started off slow with that last year too.

C Jesus Montero was ranked by Baseball America as having the best power in the organization, ahead of Tabata and Battle. For a catcher, that's special. For a catcher less than two months older than me, that's even more special. Montero is a hulking presence at the plate, at 6'4" 230 and growing. He hit .280/.366/.421 in 107 ABs for the GCL Yankees in his stateside debut as a 17-year-old. Montero is big for a catcher, and 29 of 32 basestealers stole successfully off of him last year. The consensus is that he will have to move to first base, but his bat would still make him a prospect there.
What He Will Become: He's still behind the plate for now, and if he stays there, think David Ross with more average, or Ivan Rodriguez in his prime minus the defense. At first, Mark Teixeira minus the defense and switch-hitting.

My thoughts exactly. He is not backing up his opinions. I highly doubt that he has even seen these kids play live, anywhere, at any time.

Take his opinions for what they are worth. And remember the source. There is no history behind him that would lead one to give any "weighting" to his words. For example, I would take any Pitching information from Mr. Horne Sr. more strongly than from your average fan. Another example: I would take something from Chad Jennings with more "weight" than something from many other journalists. Especially concerning the AAA (SWB) team.
