    Montero is en fuego!!

All that DHing since Romine came back really seems to have re-energized him.

Well the league ops for the sally league .701 and the team ops for Charlestown is .719

So Montero is about 150 points better than league average, that's pretty damn impressive

His OPS+ is roughly 150. There is a guy over at NoMaas who keeps that info for the minors.

I hate to say this because it's early in his career, but this guy can hit like no other young player I've seen in a Yankee uniform especially at his young age. He's doing things that Tabata didn't do before he hurt his wrist. It's going to be interesting to see what he does in FSL next season.

One has to love how the OPS is rising this late in his 1st season of "full-season" ball. This is a very positive sign regarding his physical conditioning.

There is definitely something to look forward to with Montero.

His SO/BB in his last 10 games is 7/6 and he's hitting .462 with 2 home runs and 5 doubles.

He seams to be getting better as the season goes on in his first taste of full season ball as an 18-year-old. Thank god he plays for the Yankees.

i'm beginning to come around to the belief that if his bat can play as an elite level bat as a 1b he would be better off there than at catcher.

now if his bat were to play as an elite level bat as a catcher and not much better than league average as a 1b then there would be motivation to keep him behind the plate.

    Re: Jesus Montero

IMO a possible position change for Jesus all depends on Romine's development. If he keeps hitting, I wouldn't be totallly opposed to shifting Montero to 1B or RF. Wasn't Romine supposed to be a defensive stud with (I remember reading specifically about this) a cannon arm? Any updates on that?

he might be faster than a slug but not by much - haha. hes faster than fasano and molina but hes also a lot younger. he did a fair amount of base running tonight and we were all surprised with how slow he was. i always thought that maybe OF could be a possibility for him but based on tonight i would be stunned if he could play the OF. and my guess is he would have very limited range at first. he probably has the reflexes to get things hit near him but hes not going to be ranging for balls.

    Re: Jesus Montero

I was at the Charleston game tonight, got Montero's autograph, he was very nice! The kid is like a man amongst boys there its truly unbelievable, he looks like a giant beast out there, 3 out of his four at bats he scorched the ball, his triple was hit roughly 15 ft away from the warning track, where the center fielder leaped out to catch but just missed it and got injured on the play, montero actually had a chance for an inside the park homerun LOL, no joke, but was held up by the third base coach, and also i was very impressed with his throwing arm, looked like it had pretty good zip and accuracy on it from what i could see, from him warming up, although he didn't even attempt a throw when there was a double steal against him, but other than that, he looked great.

He has surpassed almost all my predictions for the season. Especially OBP and average. He is just around 50 XBH, which is a very nice total for someone his age, in their first full season.

Can't say I am pleased. I am ecstatic!!

I think in the mid 40's, and like said before, he will be punished a little because people still won't be convinced he'll stay at catcher.

At this point it shouldn't matter where they project him defensively.

He is an elite level bat at any position on the field.

To bring in a forum favorite like Lars Anderson, last year he was .288/.385/.443 in the SAL and he ranked 40th in the top 100.

Good point. Compared to what Anderson did last year, Montero is younger, has better #'s and can be C/1b

He should be ranked higher than Lars was no doubt.

On the flip side, until he shows that he can perform at the mlb level its ridiculous for anyone to try to compare him to some of the best hitters in the league today.

I don't think anyone is saying that he isn't capable of being that good, but to crown him as the next "so and so" is completely irrational.

Yup. And it also puts even more pressure on these guys. It wasn't that long ago people were comparing Tabata to Manny Ramirez.....

That was of those awful "if everything goes right" comparisons. Atleast we've seen Montero hit for power.

I see no need to compare him to anyone. But at the same time, if people want to they're not necessarily overrating him. The Yanks are thrilled about this kid.
