The Cardinals have signed Randy Winn.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/0...medium=twitter

Winn, 36 next week, hit just .213/.300/.295 in 71 plate appearances for the Yanks, and his merely average defensive performance wasn't even getting him playing time as a late-inning defense replacement by the end of his tenure. The Yanks are still on the hook for his $1.1MM salary, less the pro-rated portion of the league minimum that St. Louis will pay him.
238 more runs to score 1000.

Wrap-up article about Mike Stanton's first year of coaching high school baseball.

The two losses leave Stanton at the coordinates of "maybe" and "perhaps" for next year. His services were needed this year because [Greg] Butler was unable to devote his February-to-June to Don Bosco due to altered responsibilites in a nearby school district. Neither Stanton nor Butler can say what the corresponding months in 2011 will bring. Either -- or, in some way, both -- could be coaching the Ironmen.

"I still am aspiring," Stanton says. But his sentence ends there. He hasn't filed his retirement papers with the players union, not because he anticipates a comeback. He knows that swelling in his left knee, which undermined his chance to find work with the Cubs bullpen in 2009 Spring Training, might return if he were do more than coach. And the velocity that made him such a powerful part of three World Series championship teams with the Yankees is dependent on the push-off leg. His threw his last big league pitch for the Reds in 2007.

He did adopt the "manager's pose" this year, though. Years with Bobby Cox, Joe Torre, John Oates, Kevin Kennedy, Terry Francona, Art Howe and Felipe Alou made an impression. But he wasn't managing, he was coaching.

    And he liked it.
“Sometimes all of us need to be reminded that this is just a kid’s game. We just happen to be grown men playing it.” --Mike Stanton

On the YES broadcast tonight, they mentioned that former Yankee Jeff Karstens pitched in that Stephen Strasburg debut game. Jeter is still friendly with him, and texted him, "Your fastball had better be faster than Strasburg's changeup." And guess what ... it wasn't!

Former Yankee Tyler Clippard also pitched in that game, in relief of Strasburg.

    He got through 6 innings on 105 pitches, though, 9 H, 6 R, 6 K, only 1 BB. I was almost kind of impressed.
