At 30 seconds check out Matsui striking out and Ichiro at 1:11. That's a really flat mound

Re: The Former Yankee Performance Thread v4.0

I was startled to hear that Joe Torre once again has Tanyon Sturtze in his bullpen ...

Tanyon Sturtze said there were several times this year when he wondered why he was still pitching.

Like when the 37-year-old reliever was in extended spring training in Vero Beach, Fla., working out with 18- and 19-year-olds who spoke a language and listened to music he couldn't comprehend. Or when he was pitching in front of empty seats in Las Vegas in 100-degree temperatures.

But a call from Torre on Wednesday night made everything worthwhile.

Twenty-seven months removed from major shoulder surgery that ended a three-year run with the New York Yankees, Sturtze was about to be called back to the majors. His contract was purchased by the Dodgers from triple-A Las Vegas the next day.

"It's hard to explain how happy and excited I am," said Sturtze, who was 2-2 with a 4.38 ERA in 39 games in double and triple A.

A veteran who played 11 seasons in the big leagues with six teams, Sturtze nearly called it quits in the spring when he didn't make the Dodgers' major league roster out of camp as a non-roster invitee. But Torre asked him to consider spending time in the minors.

Sturtze recalled the conversations he had with former players, who told him that they didn't know what to do with themselves.

Why would he be any different?

"It's not like I have a Harvard degree to fall back on," said Sturtze, who never attended a four-year college.

Good luck to Tanyon, he always tried his hardest, including attempting to pitch through the injury that almost ended his career!

I was just going to post that! Nice to see Irabu is doing well for himself.
If they ask who was our star, give them twenty five names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.

Latroy's last 10 games. Maybe the fans in Houston didn't boo him right off the bat for wearing some long forgotten ex-Stroh's number. I'm probably completely off base, but I think that the BS with #21 cost the Yankees a lot of productivity and money. Thanks to the myopic Paulie fans.

I'm not buying the uniform number BS. Maybe his suddenly improved numbers have more to do with the fact that he is facing inept minor league lineups in the National League.

Russ Ohlendorf had his first major league start tonight:

    6IP, 7H, 4ER, 1BB, 2 SO

He didn't factor in the win but the Pirates did win the game..Volquez had 13 strikeouts in the 7innings he pitched and his team got the loss...

I wish Russ well..seemed like a nice guy. Pittsburgh is going to give him 5 starts to end the season...

today Gary Sheffield charged the mound...from first base. per Rotoworld:
Gary Sheffield was ejected from Friday's game in the seventh inning after a benches-clearing incident.

Sheffield was annoyed after being hit by a pitch and decided to run his mouth after Fausto Carmona made a pickoff throw to first. After the exchange of words, Sheffield proceeded to run toward the mound and lunge at Carmona as the benches and bullpens cleared. He's definitely facing a suspension.

Hmm, this is not exactly performance-related ... but he IS a former Yankee, so ...

TAMPA, Fla. -- Colorado Rockies pitcher Luis Vizcaino has been arrested after police in Tampa say he was driving under the influence.

According to The Tampa Tribune, Vizcaino was charged with misdemeanor DUI.

Officers said he was going 71 mph in a 45 mph zone early Monday. Police said Vizcaino's eyes were glassy and bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol, with his blood alcohol level just over the limit.

The 34-year-old pitcher lives in St. Petersburg and was being held at Hillsborough County Jail on $500 bond.

Musician Bernie Williams said last night he has a new CD coming out in April called "Moving Forward.''

Just in case any GMs like Brian Cashman are interested, Williams also said he has not shut the door on his baseball career. Williams, 40, is not totally ready to move forward away from baseball. Playing in the new Yankee Stadium would be a dream come true for the legendary Yankee center fielder, always a fan favorite.

It was announced last night that Williams would play a major role in the new movie "Keeper of the Pinstripes.'' When asked by The Post if he would like to play in the new Yankee Stadium in 2009 -- the Yankees do have a need -- Williams' eyes grew wide as he said, "Absolutely, yeah. Who wouldn't?
    Good lord...

[Ramiro] Mendoza, 36, inked a Minor League contract with Milwaukee that included an invitation to big league Spring Training camp. He has not appeared in the Majors since he pitched one game for the Yankees in 2005 following shoulder surgery, but he's a veteran of 342 big league games and owns a 4.30 ERA. He is on Panama's preliminary roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
Good luck to "El Brujo". I hope he can make it back to the big leagues. He was always a favorite of mine, and an integral part of the most recent dynasty teams. I'll never forget his "icewater in his veins" performance in the '99 LCS against the Red Sox.

    Stanton's Juices Are Flowing Again

    http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseb...-cub20.article

MESA, Ariz. -- The worst five days of Mike Stanton's baseball career started and ended in a Houston hospital less than 11 months ago.

It's where he spent the final days with his younger brother, who died of cirrhosis. In between, he returned to Sarasota, Fla., only to be released by the Cincinnati Reds.

'That makes for a tough run,'' he said, ''a tough few days.''

An emotionally wrenching, inglorious end to an All-Star pitching career that included 20 World Series appearances for the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees.

Except that Stanton, 41, said that wasn't the end.
Make no mistake, he said, this is no spring fling. He plans to make this team and return to the big leagues this season -- regardless of how the bullpen numbers might stack against him -- if only to go out on his own terms.

''That has something to do with it,'' he said. ''But is that the reason I'm back? No. The reason I'm back is because I love to play. I love to compete. And there's no doubt in my mind I can still do this.''

Not an actual former yankee, but apparently someone is out there impersonating Andy Phillips, and getting him into some sordid affairs. Note that the link is more or less safe for work, but one of the main players in the story is an adult film star, and the title of the page mentions her line of work.

PHOENIX -- Carl Pavano talks about his body like it's a separate person -- and not a person he gets along with.
"When you're dealing with a body that has always given up on you," Pavano said, "it's tough to stay on top of your game."

But Pavano currently has nothing but good things to say about his body and his game. He made his Cactus League debut with the Indians against the A's at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Saturday and worked two perfect innings, getting five ground-ball outs.
    Of course.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/transactions/...r=2009&month=2 says the Mets signed Ron Villone to a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training. Villone was the only Yankee pitcher to allow a hit against the Mets on June 30, 2006 and he got the win in that game.

It just isn't your day when a soft-tossing lefty plunks you twice and a hard-throwing righty does it two innings later.

Have Glove, Will Travel For Stanton

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...tnerId=rss_chc

MESA, Ariz. -- Do you keep a list of the Major League ballparks you've been to? Do you plan trips to add new stadiums to the group? How many have you been to? Five? 10? Mike Stanton most likely has you beat. He's pitched in 43, and that's not counting a couple exhibition games in Mexico.
    So, what are Stanton's favorites?
What about New York vs. New York? Stanton has played for both the Yankees (1997-2002, '05) and Mets (2003-04).

"My first time in Yankee Stadium was actually as a Red Sox so that was a tough place to play," Stanton said. "It was an old school baseball stadium, the way it's formed, and when I first got on the mound, it was real different. All the other stadiums were cookie cutter stadiums from the '70s, all round. Yankee Stadium was different. Was it in '98 when they re-did Yankee Stadium and they took four feet off the mound so it was really domed. They had to do that for drainage. It gave a real weird feeling to it."

    And Shea?

"The two years I was there, we [stunk]," he said. "People ask me all the time, 'What's your favorite team?' and that's not a fair question. We won three championships in a row. Shea was OK. Not the best part of town.”

"If there was one team that needed a new stadium," he said, "it was the Mets."

Not performance related but definitely a former Yankee :

UPDATE, 2:11 p.m.: Mike Mussina is here. He’s on vacation with his family.
UPDATE, 3:00 p.m.: It was good to see the Moose. He’s here for a week with his wife and kids, spending time out of the Pennsylvania cold. He has no regrets whatsoever. “When I saw the weight room I knew I was retired,” he said.

Looks like ex-Yankee Chris Britton isn't making the Padres' pen:

The Padres crave hard-throwing bullpen arms, and Britton fits their previous mold of soft-tossers with good control.
