He tossed a few innings in the Durham/Pawtucket game this afternoon. I was surprised to see him show up in the Gameday.

Re: The Former Yankee Performance Thread v4.0

I know someone mentioned Shawn Chacon earlier in this thread, but thought I'd add that Chacon had his EIGHTH no decision in a row to start the season the other night. I don't have his stats in front of me, but I believe he's gone at least 6 full innings in every one of those games, and his ERA is well below 4. Talk about rough luck (and/or a rough 'pen.)

And I suspect I'm not the only one wishing we still had him on our team.
Congratulations Mike Mussina on your 20th win!

After a week of torrid hitting that helped the Cubs to a 4-2 record, Alfonso Soriano was named National League Player of the Week, presented by Bank of America, on Monday.

From May 12-18, Soriano amassed 16 hits, including six multihit games, and raised his batting average from .223 to .296. He led the Majors in home runs (seven), RBIs (14), slugging percentage (1.258) and total bases (39) in that span.
Congrats to Sori on a big week!

Andy's OPS at AAA is .887 so it looks he like deserves the backup 1B/PH role vacated by Hatteberg.

Good move by Jocketty optioning Patterson and thereby taking away all temptation by Dusty to play him.

Re: The Former Yankee Performance Thread v4.0

Nice to see Juan Rivera get the walkoff hit this weekend..especially since he's only had about 15 ABs in May which is ridiculous:

But the biggest hit came from Rivera, who had only 15 at-bats in May before coming up as a pinch-hitter in the No. 9 spot. Before missing most of last season with a broken leg, Rivera would often get that many at-bats in a weekend.

The new job, he said, is more complicated.

"If we're not playing, we have to get ready for whatever situation might arise," said Rivera, who leads the Angels with three pinch-hits. "Mike [Scioscia] had confidence in me as one of the guys who's been here the longest.

"It's a feeling I get more comfortable with as I prepare for the role I have now."
Hopefully he'll be a regular again next year..that's what the Angels have told him anyway...

Re: The Former Yankee Performance Thread v4.0

I wish I would have seen this conversation happening with Rollins and Tom Gordon.

Reliever Tom Gordon, called upon to protect the lead in the eighth, walked the first batter he faced, pinch-hitter Luis Gonzalez, on five pitches, and the crowd began to get loud and antsy.

Gordon then threw two straight balls to dangerous Hanley Ramirez, the potential tying run.

That was enough for Jimmy Rollins, who trotted in from shortstop and let Gordon have it.

"He got on my ass," Gordon said. "He said, 'What the heck are you doing? Throw strikes. Babe Ruth's dead.' "

Rollins' little pep talk worked. Gordon turned into a different pitcher. He threw three straight fastballs and struck out Ramirez. He then retired Jeremy Hermida on a pop-up and Jorge Cantu on a fly ball to make everyone in the ballpark breathe easier.

Brad Lidge overpowered the Marlins for his 13th save in the ninth, but on this day, the best relief pitching was done by Gordon - with an assist from Rollins.

"After he talked to me, I just tried to be as nasty as I can," Gordon said.

Rollins didn't actually invoke Babe Ruth's name during his trip to the mound. Gordon made that up because he thought it sounded good, and he was right. It's a cool quote. As for what was actually said, Rollins didn't have full recall.

"I don't know what I said, but it made sense to him," Rollins said. "It was an important inning. I told him if he didn't get out of it, I was going to talk about him. I just challenged him a little bit. We have respect for each other, and I knew there was a chance I could strike a chord with him."
    http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sport..._the_Talk.html

There were a few times when I wish Jeter would have given him that "pep" talk.

I know I'm replying to an old post, but I like Juan. He is a solid player...nothing amazing, but a solid fourth outfielder at the very least. It's a shame the way he has gotten pushed down on the depth chart due to LA's stacked outfield.

You have to figure that Garret Anderson is gone next year, which should give Juan some more playing time. What is the contract status of Vlad? I've heard rumors of him hanging it up at the end of this year. He certainly is becoming more and more injury prone as he ages.

"The name of the job right now is about going out and getting outs, and I'm pathetic," Proctor said. "It's embarrassing for the team when guys compete like that all day to go out there and pitch like that is stupid. I'm tired of people making excuses and saying I'm hurt. It's not that. I have to go out and make pitches and get outs.

"It's not rocket science. And to let a game like that get away, I'm embarrassed. I've never had this. It's one of those things that will make you stronger in the end, but it's bad. You wrack your brain trying to figure out what the hell is going wrong."

Doug Mink was great! Loved his D and the occasional big hit. Great team guy too. Should be more like him. I loved when he talked about his favorite player. That was funny to hear a ML player say that. He is friends with Arod and his favorite player he says is Miguel Cairo!!

Well, this didn't take very long:

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...=.jsp&c_id=mlb

The Nationals most likely will have to put shortstop Alberto Gonzalez on the disabled list because of a left glute contusion. He hasn't played a game since last Monday against the Rockies.
Gonzalez was injured in the fourth inning Monday, when he slid hard into third base. He stayed in the game, but was taken out two innings later.

In his short time with the Nationals, Gonzalez was 6-for-13 (.462) in four games.

Anybody else catch the Soriano "highlights" on Baseball Tonight yesterday?

In game one of the doubleheader, he hit a laser to left field and watched it for a few seconds then started a HR trot toward first only to have the ball stay in the yard. He had to stop at first base. It made Manny look quick out of the box by comparison. His next AB, the Braves pitcher stuck one right behind his ear and got ejected. The BT crew were just ripping Soriano like you couldn't believe.

Game two of the double header, Soriano hits another rocket. For a moment he watched it, then the light bulb went off and he started running. Once again the ball stayed in the park, but this time he made it to second base. You could tell though, his first instinct was to stop and admire again.

I wonder what Pinella thinks of all this? Heck, maybe he was the one who instructed the Braves pitcher to throw at him.
