Liriano's real return: 6IP, 5K, 3H, 3BB, 0R. Excellent.

Really liked what I saw from Liriano today.
Fastball 91-92 mph, couple of 93s mixed in. Decent movement. Wasn't holding back while throwing his Slider. 84-86 mph. Filthy. Threw a couple of changeups. Nice 3rd pitch.
Encouraging.
He's no Livan but I guess he'll do.
WTH happened last night. Twins were up 6-0 and I go to bed. They end up losing 11-6. Gross.

I don't want to talk about it...it was just an extra kick in the groin after the debacles in Arlington. Perkins was cruising into 7 then suddenly lost it. Gardy pushed his luck, and boom, there go 5 runs for the Mariners (4 came off of a grand slam). I turned it off after that HOPING they'd manage to hang on and win, but...yeah.Originally Posted by chris_5103

Unless Matt Guerrier can pull himself together, the Twins will be dead by the time they return from the 15-game road trip.

Really? Not too shabby. I didn't watch it out of fear of seeing the pen blow it again (I was also protesting baseball after Johnny Damon's gaffe in Toronto).Originally Posted by chris_5103

The Twins have acquired Eddie Guardado and designated Mike Lamb for assignment to make room on the roster.

If the Twins want to make the playoffs, they really should try to avoid the Seattle Mariners at all costs.

I mean, this is seriously ridiculous. But I suppose all good teams have at least one miserable team that completely dominates them. See: Yankees and Devil Rays in 2006 and Red Sox and Royals in 2007 (I believe).Originally Posted by YanksFan1992

The Twins might as well forfeit tomorrow's game and head home early at this point.
This is so painful. I can't STAND teams that play spoiler. Why can't the Mariners just roll over already?

What a lame name.MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins' new home has a name: Target Field.
The club announced on Monday morning that they have reached an agreement in principle on a 25-year deal that includes the naming rights for Target Field. The ballpark is scheduled to open in 2010.

Do you have a better name? They obviously have to use "Target" in the name as they paid for the rights.Originally Posted by NYYDragoon

Oh I totally agree with that. But once a team decides to whore themselves and sell the naming rights to their stadium, they are pretty much destined to have a lame name for their stadium.Originally Posted by NYYDragoon

I'm rooting for the Twins just so Pedroia won't win the MVP without a fight.
I'm pulling for the Twins in the AL Central (hell, in the AL races). Everyone wrote them off without Hunter and Santana, and they're winning anyway. Go Twins!

The question is if can they steamroll KC. Any stupid bullpen slip-ups (such as the many that prevented them from clinching already) are inexcusable at this point. But it certainly wouldn't surprise me if it happened (KC has played spoiler before, after all).

Something weird has kind of been bugging me. If you come to the conclusion that Pedroia is the Red Sox MVP over Youkilis, shouldn't you also come to the conclusion that Mauer is the Twins MVP over Morneau? And shouldn't the MVP race, if that's what it comes down to, be either between Pedroia and Mauer or between Youkilis and Morneau, but not between Pedroia and Morneau? If Pedroia is more valuable than Youkilis, then surely Mauer is more valuable than Morneau. Am I explaining this right?Originally Posted by THEBOSS84
The Twins young pitching has gotten them where they are and Mauer has even carried the Twins down the stretch with his bat. If they make the playoffs, which I have thought they would do all along, nobody has a complaint if Mauer gets MVP. I say that as a big Pedroia and Red Sox fan.Originally Posted by blumj
You can put him in the pot... but I would have to think that Maddon has this one all but wrapped up. Taking a team that had never finished .500 and win almost 100 in baseballs toughest division. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
I do agree if Minny wins their division... it really makes the MVP race too close to call... maybe a slight edge to the 2 guys from Minnesota

It's Mauer over Pedroia if you take positional adjustment into account enough, and it's Youkilis over Morneau if you don't. If you're so focused on who has more RBI to think Morneau has a compelling case over Youkilis, then why would you consider Pedroia at all?Originally Posted by Ljberkow12

FWIW, Pedroia's third in the league in VORP, but he's first if you narrow the field to players who play for playoff teams. Youkilis is 6th, Mauer is 9th, Carlos Quentin is 10th, Morneau is 12th.Originally Posted by THEBOSS84

Do you get what I was trying to say? Forget league MVP for minute, who do you think is the Red Sox MVP, and who do you think is the Twins MVP?Originally Posted by YASS

I think it's a very tough call between Youkilis and Pedroia on the Sox; both have had breakout seasons and both have been absolutely essential. If you put a gun to my head, I would probably say Youkilis, but only because of the huge value I put on his ability to jump around between 1st and 3rd.
For the Twins, I think it's Mauer, hands down.

This is why I didn't get my hopes up. A sweep of the Chisox is followed by being on the verge of getting swept by the Royals. Pathetic, really. Tomorrow could be an interesting day.
Oh, and IMO Mauer is the Twins MVP. Morneau has big power numbers but often doesn't come through in big situations.

Looking at the Twins stats this year... they only hit 111 hr as a team this year? That's incredible, for a playoff-bound team.
